For the next month the non-profit Ethical Metalsmiths is accepting donations of old, unwanted jewelry at several Bay Area locations, including the Academy of Art University.

"This event is an exciting and spectacular way to make all artists deeply aware of the vital importance and responsibility of recycling in our profession," says Academy of Art University Director of Graduate Fine Art Sculpture Charlene Modena.

Radical Jewelry Makeover (RJM) offers its host communities a fun, informed, and creative alternative to traditional mining practices and jewelry production. As a traveling awareness project for community mining, creative art education, and recycling, RJM teaches artists how to produce contemporary, innovative jewelry from recycled sources and proudly places responsible jewelry in the hands of consumers. The overall project raises awareness of the complicated connection between mining and metalsmithing, as well as showcasing innovative artistry.

This is how it works: The public is asked to "mine" their homes, "uncovering" gold, silver, and other jewelry, that is no longer used and deposits their "lode" at designated places in the Bay Area. Teams of volunteer jewelers and metalsmiths working at schools and studios in several locations will reconstruct and transform the donations into exciting new jewelry designs. The resulting fresh, unique, handmade, 100 percent recycled jewelry will be exhibited and sold at San Francisco's renowned Velvet da Vinci Gallery. Donors will receive discount coupons, which will be available and redeemable at the gallery during the exhibition. Sale of "makeover" jewelry will benefit Ethical Metalsmiths' efforts to educate and connect people with responsibly sourced materials.

San Francisco knows the consequences of mining. As a result of gold mining that took place more than a century ago, the San Francisco Bay is lined with several feet of sediment from hydraulic mining while its waters are contaminated with dangerous levels of mercury. Today, mining is this nation's most toxic industry according to the EPA. Earthworks reports that an estimated 80% of the gold mined each year is used for jewelry, and a single gold ring leaves 20 tons of mine waste. Ethical Metalsmiths, an artist run non-profit organization seeks to galvanize mining reform efforts by staging this "alternative supply chain."

Participants from several organizations, studios and schools are lined up to transform donations into inspiring new work. Coming together for the largest Radical Jewelry Makeover to date are the Academy of Art University, California College of Art, City College, the Crucible, Metal Arts Guild - San Francisco, Revere Academy, Richmond Art Center and Scintillant Studio. The "makeover" jewelry will be exhibited and sold at Velvet da Vinci Gallery.

Jewelry donations will be accepted from now through September 11, 2008 at all of the participating schools. Donors will receive a dollar discount for their donation (based on material and quantity), which can be used toward the purchase of a "Makeover" piece. General Timeline:
Drop off donations will be accepted from August 11 to September 11, 2008 at each school (except the Richmond Art Center, which is a MAIL IN site only). Schools will transform the donations between September 22 and October 15, 2008. The Academy of Art University will be hosting an Open House while Radical Jewelry Makeover is in progress on Saturday and Sunday, September 27th and 28th, from 1:00 to 4:00PM. It will take place at the AAU School of Fine Art Sculpture, 410 Bush Street, San Francisco, CA 94108. The exhibition at the Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco (on Polk between Broadway and Pacific) will take place October 22 through November 9. There will be a reception on Friday October 24, 2008.

ACTION FOR JUSTICE (AFJ) is a newly created website founded on the principle of revisiting and executing the true values set forth in the Preamble to the Constitution, and proposes the creation of a strong independent coalition to be a real alternative to the present two-party system (Republican and Democratic parties) in the upcoming elections.

The Preamble states:

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

AFJ-USA is a grass roots movement with one clear objective: To recover the principles and true values set forth in the Constitution, including the promotion and defense of the general welfare of the People of the United States, establishing true JUSTICE, and securing Liberty for our Posterity, in a word, improving life for our children.

AFJ-USA feels that this is the only way to put the American People back in control of their future and destiny by establishing a true, attainable and relevent agenda of priorities, among them the following:

Universal free health care and coverage for all. Especially for our children, elderly and handicapped.

A minimum guaranteed monthly income for every American Citizen to cover basic food and shelter costs. This will eliminate starvation, poverty and reduce homelessness on American soil.

Added income for our children, elderly, handicapped, and especially obligatory joint parenting. No one cares for child, nor creates a better safe guard of a child, than the right to both parents, including grandparents on both sides.

Immediate reduction of fuel prices by coming to strategic agreements with Mexico (and other countries) in order to lower the price of gas in the United States of America to approximately $1- USD per gallon in the next five years until alternative fuel sources can substitute oil.

In return, reach other strategic immigration agreements with Mexico in order to demilitarize the border, and assure that the Mexican Government will create employment in its country for its citizens so that they do not to have to cross the border and immgrate illegally to the U. S.

Give immediate amnesty to all undocumented workers and their families that can prove they are honest, hardworking, and will be U. S. Law abiding residents once they are documented. If they are found guilty of any crime within a five year period of time after they have been documented, they will be deported to their country of origin. If a legal resident induces and/or is found to be a complice to any crime committed by an undocumented alien, that person will also be deported and/or made responsible and/or accountable and will be punished for those crimes.

Support our troops in Iraq 100% but immediately establish and implement the political, economic, social, and military strategy to be able to arrive to a diplomatic settlement to reduce internal confrontations and avoid a civil war. Establish a reasonable timeline to remove our troops from harms way in foreign soil. The United States of America (USA) is not responsible for the rest of the world, but will continue to protect and defend its interests, and provide aid to other third world countries in need.

All political representatives which support the war in Iraq will immediately be asked to travel to and visit that country (at the risk of their personal safety), to show their support along side our brave men and women overseas, to prove to the American People that they truly defend the interests of our brave Military and of the People. To be a politician and be paid for representing the interests of others means to put your personal safety and well being on the line as was done by our founding fathers over 200 years ago. If a politician refuses to go he or she will be asked to resign immediately. This includes the President, Vice President, etc. which have little or no knowledge of what true combat is and risking others' lives is so trivial. We shall see how brave they truly are.

Implore the rest of the world to cooperate and reach peaceful resolutions to military conflicts via the United Nations (UN), and to put the mechanisms in place to significantly reduce, and eventually eliminate, the manufacture and traffic of arms and weapons, including weapons of mass destruction, (which have yet to be found in Iraq). In this point the American People feel they have been lied to.

The immediate reestablishment, execution and protection of our inalienable civil and political rights as set out in our Constitution, especially with regards to no more illegal wiretaps without prior Judicial review and a proper court order.

Creating the conditions necessary to help the American People cast their votes by way of the United States Postal Service (USPS), via an observed, controlled and defended voting environment, registering the vote both electronically and physically to verify its accuracy, and above all assuring the secrecy of the vote. No one can ever know who the citizen voted for and "write-in votes" will be 100% valid, accepted and counted.

United States citizens will no longer be obligated to previously register to vote nor be obligated to state their affiliation to one political party or another, and it will be the responsibility of an independent and audited Registrar to assure that no fraud is committed.

The United States Attorney General and his staff will be made personally accountable for any fraud committed, and subject to trial by jury.

Attorney Generals throughout the United States will no longer be above the Law and will be held personally accountable to the People for the use of public funds in the prosecution of frivilous accusations where a Jury finds the Defendant innocent. They will also be subject to trial by jury.

In the preceeding case, any Attorney General which has presented an accusation and loses, will have to immediately resign (or will be terminated) and will no longer be elegible for Public Office.

AFJ-USA is in conversations with other independent political parties in the United States of America (USA), and will not have any contacts with either the Republican nor Democratic Political Parties, since they have proven beyond a reasonable doubt that they are neither "Republican" nor "Democratic", and have only defended the interest of Lobbies, Multi-National Corporations, Special Interest Groups, etc., and have not promoted the general Welfare nor secured Liberty for our Posterity (our children) as was stated in the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States of America (USA) over 200 years ago, nor have acted in the best interest of the American People.

Regarding the previous political ideas, opinions and comments, AFJ-USA will present their case before the American People at the next election and will let them decide their future for their children in America.

A group of 15 advertising and public relations students at The University of Alabama are piloting a campaign to address the national problem of binge drinking on their campus with a $75,000 grant from the Century Council

Most college students look forward to summer break as a time for relaxing and taking a break from responsibilities. For one hardworking group of University of Alabama students, summer was a time to plan a national public relations and advertising campaign.

A group of 15 public relations and advertising students were selected to pilot the LessThanUThink Campaign, a full scale advertising and public relations campaign, on The University of Alabama’s campus. After planning campaign strategies this summer, they are busy reaching as many fellow students as possible this fall with a fully integrated advertising and public relations campaign.

Created by UA’s Ad Team as part of a national competition, the LessThanUThink Campaign placed second in the 2009 American Advertising Federation National Student Advertising Competition. The Century Council awarded the Advertising and Public Relations department at The University of Alabama a $75,000 grant to pilot the campaign in fall 2010 because the organization believed the campaign would succeed if implemented nationwide. Of the four national winners, The University of Alabama was the only school to receive a grant as well.

The 15 students who make up the LessThanUThink Campaign team are leaders in UA’s College of Communication and Information Sciences. Instead of taking a traditional senior-level campaigns class, these students chose to dedicate their summer to planning a full-scale communications campaign. This fall, the students are piloting the campaign on UA’s campus to address the national problem of binge drinking. Although implementing a campaign is no easy task, their meetings are filled with an air of excitement.

“I joined this campaign opportunity because I wanted real world PR experience,” said Allison Cook, student coordinator for the campaign. “How many students finishing an undergraduate degree can say they’ve conducted a real full-scale integrated communications campaign for a national client? This isn’t just pitching an idea; it’s being given $75,000 to implement every aspect of a campaign.” 

It is this real world experience that sets apart the advertising and public relations department at The University of Alabama from other colleges. As PRWeek magazine’s top-ranked undergraduate public relations program in the U. S. for the second year in a row, the college prides itself on providing unique opportunities for students.

The campaign launched on campus September 1, and UA students are responding well to the campaign’s message. From a flashmob in the student union to 4,000 neon stress balls on the quad, the student team created quite a buzz around Tuscaloosa. The campaign hopes to increase the number of students who associate binge drinking with negative social consequences by using humor instead of scare tactics and eye-catching commercials and ads.

“This is an extraordinary group of students who volunteered their time this summer to have this campaign ready to go when school started,” said Teri Henley, advisor for AdTeam and faculty coordinator for the grant. “They have done an excellent job implementing the campaign they developed.”

It Takes LessThanUThink.

The LessThanUThink Campaign is one of four award-winning campaigns selected by The Century Council, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting responsible decision-making regarding alcoholic beverages. The Century Council awarded the University of Alabama's College of Communication and Information Sciences, home to PRWeek’s number one undergraduate public relations program for the second year in a row, a $75,000 grant to implement the campaign. Originally developed by The University of Alabama’s award-winning National Student Advertising Competition Team in 2009, the LessThanUThink campaign is a local test for possible national implementation.
