New Peer to Peer Venture Capital Investing Website Launches in Austin, TX

New Peer to Peer Venture Capital Investing Website Launches in Austin, TX

MicroVentures is positioned as the future of venture capital funding, facilitating investment in tenable entrepreneurial ventures. Entrepreneurs can access a broader range of investors, increasing their chances of getting funded, and investors can invest smaller amounts than typically expected in traditional venture capital situations. This opens up early access and spreads investor risk, while benefitting from a review and due diligence process similar to that of other venture capital companies.

Austin, TX (PRWEB) September 9, 2010

Good things come in small packages. Not a theory often applied to venture capital, or funding small business ideas.

Enter Bill Clark, a capital-and-idea matchmaker of sorts, who breaks the venture capital mold by connecting well-vetted entrepreneurial concepts online with investors looking for the next great idea. His company, Microventures, facilitates the matchmaking process online through www. MicroVentures. com, making it easier for investors to connect with entrepreneurs, and for small businesses to access critical funding.

Based in Austin, TX, Microventures’ unique capital model allows investor participation in the funding of startup opportunities not typically available outside a traditional venture capital structure. Inspired by other peer-to-peer platforms, Mr. Clark and partner Scott Rhode created MicroVentures to get capital to small businesses and early stage concepts, as well as to make to private opportunities and early access easier for individual investors, at significantly smaller investment amounts.

The MicroVentures team looks at prospective early stage companies using a variety of success criteria – such as suitable risk, likelihood of profitability, and other key due diligence factors. Businesses are then matched with investors for a venture capital hybrid of "peer-to-peer" lending. The company funds a wide range of industries, including technology, consumer products and services, healthcare, media and entertainment, and telecommunications. Investors can invest smaller amounts than typically expected in traditional venture capital situations, and still benefit from a due diligence process similar to that of other venture capital companies. Business investments initially total $50,000 to $250,000 per deal; individual investors can invest from $250 to a maximum of $5,000 on the platform and any amount offline by contacting MicroVentures.

Interested investors complete a questionnaire to determine if MicroVentures’ private offering investments are suitable based on internal MicroVentures guidelines for investment. Once accepted, investors have the opportunity to evaluate and purchase the company’s exclusive private offerings. There is no obligation to invest and no fee required.

Businesses interested in the MicroVentures funding platform complete an application, and submit a business plan and a $99 fee. MicroVentures reviews the plan, and the company is then notified if approved for a more detailed second phase review. Following the detailed review, suitable companies are listed on Microventures’ investment / offering platform.

Matchmaker Clark hopes to connect 20 businesses with $3 Million in capital in its first year, with additional targets of $5 Million in the future.

The Breath Analyzer Market is Forecasted to Grow as People Become Disenchanted with Alcohol Abusers Killing People

The Breath Analyzer Market is Forecasted to Grow as People Become Disenchanted with Alcohol Abusers Killing People

Research and Markets (researchandmarkets. com/reports/c29148) has announced the addition of Breath Analyzer Market Opportunities, Market Forecasts, and Market Strategies, 2006-2012 to their offering.

Dublin (PRWEB) December 9, 2005

Research and Markets (http://www. researchandmarkets. com/reports/c29148 (http://www. researchandmarkets. com/reports/c29148)) has announced the addition of Breath Analyzer Market Opportunities, Market Forecasts, and Market Strategies, 2006-2012 to their offering.

Alcohol breath analyzer market driving forces relate to greater desire for prevention of accidents of all types, and greater recognition that alcohol is a cause of accidents. Breath analyzer market forecast analysis indicates that the markets are set to grow substantially. The reason is that people are becoming disenchanted with the killing of innocent people by alcohol abusers.

Work situations are as likely to be unsympathetic with alcohol abuse. The situation is not able to be settled without testing. People that use alcohol are not able to work efficiently.

In the United States, alcohol plays a part in half the automobile fatalities and nearly half of all industrial accidents. For employers, alcohol abuse accounts for two thirds of all substance abuse complaints and depletes a similar percentage from the health care benefit budgets of American companies.

In performing a breath alcohol test, it is important to analyze an alveolar or deep lung air sample. If a deep lung sample in not obtained, the sample analyzed could be diluted with breath of a lower alcohol concentration from the upper respiratory tract. This would result in a lower than optimum test result.

Progress has been made during the past 20 years to reduce the proportion of fatally injured drivers with blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) at or above 0.08 percent. Proportions are lower in all age groups and among drivers of passenger vehicles, tractor-trailers, and motorcycles. There has been a substantial decline among those with very high BACs (at or above 0.15 percent), who often are assumed to be "hard-core" drinking drivers. Progress has stalled in recent years and alcohol-impaired driving is still a major problem.

There is more recognition that alcohol abuse is a health issue. People are learning how to treat the disease. There is increasing recognition that alcoholism is treatable in hospital based treatment programs. Markets at $27.9 million in 2005 are anticipated to reach $341.7 million by 2011.

Report Methodology

This is the 260th report in a series of market research reports that provide forecasts in communications, telecommunications, the internet, computer, software, and telephone equipment. The project leaders take direct responsibility for writing and preparing each report. They have significant experience preparing industry studies. Forecasts are based on primary research and proprietary data bases. Forecasts reflect analysis of the market trends in the segment and related segments. Unit and dollar shipments are analyzed through consideration of dollar volume of each market participation in the segment. Market share analysis includes conversations with key customers of products, industry segment leaders, marketing directors, distributors, leading market participants, and companies seeking to develop measurable market share. Over 200 in-depth interviews are conducted for each report with a broad range of key participants and opinion leaders in the market segment.

Glutamate Identified As Predictor of Disease Progression in Multiple Sclerosis

Glutamate Identified As Predictor of Disease Progression in Multiple Sclerosis

UCSF researchers have identified a correlation between higher levels of glutamate, which occurs naturally in the brain as a byproduct of metabolism, and greater disease burden in multiple sclerosis patients.

(Vocus) April 30, 2009

UCSF researchers have identified a correlation between higher levels of glutamate, which occurs naturally in the brain as a byproduct of metabolism, and greater disease burden in multiple sclerosis patients. The study is the first to measure glutamate toxicity in the brain over time and suggests an improved method for tracking the disease and predicting its course.

The research team employed a novel technique, developed by Radhika Srinivasan, PhD, study author and assistant researcher in the UCSF Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging, to measure glutamate levels in clinical trial patients. The technique was based on a sophisticated form of imaging known as proton MR spectroscopy, which uses simple radio-frequency pulses targeting specific brain chemicals.

Study findings were presented today (April 29, 2009) during the American Academy of Neurology annual scientific meeting in Seattle.

Glutamate, a neurotransmitter, in normal levels performs fundamental processes like memory and sensory perception. In excess, it triggers a cascade of negative reactions in the brain leading to many of the complications associated with neurologic diseases such as MS, Parkinson's disease, stroke, ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's disease) and Alzheimer's disease by destroying nerve cells and causing seizures, injury after stroke, and the perception of pain, among other problems.

Already a target for therapeutic drug development, the identification of the glutamate pathway for MS suggests a new way for clinicians to monitor treatment of these drugs.

"This is the first time that we have had the ability to measure glutamate toxicity in the brain in real time, which gives us a marker for monitoring disease progression as well as our treatment of the disease," said Daniel Pelletier, MD, study author, associate professor of neurology and a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Research Group at the University of California, San Francisco (http://www. neurology. ucsf. edu/msresearch).

"For instance, we already have anti-glutamate drugs, so now we can assess, with imaging, the impact of the therapy and the progression of the disease," he said.

Elevated levels of glutamate in the brain are understood clinically as a cause of cell injury and death. Injury to neuro-axons, which are the long fibers that extend from the cell body of a neuron cell toward other nerve cells, is partly responsible for disability progression in MS. In a previous study using proton MR spectroscopic imaging, the research team reported that MS brains have significant elevation of glutamate concentrations. For this study, researchers looked for levels of glutamate and levels of NAA (n-acteylaspartate), a marker of axonal integrity in mature brains, to see if a relationship existed.

The team scanned 265 MS patients annually and followed them for an average of 1.8 years. Accounting for disease duration and age of onset, researchers found that significant annual loss of NAA, which is a measure of neurodegeneration, was associated with concentration of glutamate. This finding indicated that the higher the level of glutamate, the greater the expected neuro-axonal loss over time.

According to the authors, the study is the largest clinical analysis to date of metabolism byproducts in the brain, and the results strongly support the link between the excess of glutamate and decline of neuro-axonal integrity in MS.

The finding, Pelletier says, goes beyond MS. "Now that we have those markers, we can quantify levels of glutamate for other neurologic diseases, which could be another way to track disease progression and therapeutic intervention."

The UCSF study, known as the EPIC MRI Study, aims to develop reliable genetic biomarkers that correlate with quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) measures of disease burden and severity. Participants are involved for at least two years and receive an annual brain MRI.

Additional UCSF authors are Sarah J. Nelson, PhD, chair, Division of Bioengineering; John Kornak, PhD, assistant adjunct professor of Radiology; Darin T. Okuda, MD, assistant clinical professor in Neurology; and Bill Chu, specialist in Radiology.

The study was funded in part by the National MS Society.

UCSF is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care. For further information, visit www. ucsf. edu.

Kardea Introduces Snacks for Weight Management and Heart Health

Kardea Nutrition introduced a lower calorie nutrition bar designed to support heart health and weight management. “Snacking has become a major source of harmful calories,” says Kardea’s Founder, Robert Leighton. "Our vegan bars provide delicious and balanced nutrition that satisfies hunger and delivers ingredients associated with heart health, including plant sterols, soluble fiber and plant-based proteins while meeting the FDA guidelines for low sodium, low saturated fats and no trans fats."

Hamden, CT (PRWEB) December 30, 2010

Kardea Nutrition introduced a lower calorie nutrition bar designed to support heart health and weight management. “Snacking has become a major source of harmful calories,” says Kardea’s Founder, Robert Leighton. "Our newly formulated bars provide a delicious and balanced mix of healthy ingredients that satisfies hunger and delivers heart healthful nutrition."

As a long time confectioner, Leighton formulated these bars as part of his personal mission to create great tasting foods that help enable the nutritional recommendations of the American Heart Association (AHA). “When I was 47,” says Leighton, “I was confronted with a real need to lower my cholesterol levels.” Looking to avoid medication, Leighton followed the recommendations of the AHA and the National Institutes of Health National Cholesterol Education Program. “I was able to significantly lower both my cholesterol and my weight,” says Leighton, “but I frequently crossed into unhealthy eating when it came to snacking.”

Each of the four Kardea bar flavors was formulated with natural ingredients to satisfy cravings for popular sweet snacks, notably biscotti, banana bread, lemon squares and spice cake. Providing 7 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein in 140 calories, these bars support calorie reduction efforts. The combination of fiber and protein provide a lasting sense of fullness. Utilizing only natural sweeteners, the Kardea bars deliver 8 to 10 grams of sugar, substantially less than most nutrition bars.

The bars also deliver 1 full gram of plant sterols and soluble fibers from oats and psyllium. These nutrients are recommended by the National Institutes of Health as part of an integrated diet to support heart health and cholesterol reduction. The Kardea gourmet nutrition bars can be found at Vitamin Shoppe, Whole Foods and and other leading natural and healthy food retailers.

Massively Parallel Technologies and the University of Colorado Enter Into Cooperative Relationship for Large-Scale Proteomics Development

Massively Parallel Technologies and the University of Colorado Enter Into Cooperative Relationship for Large-Scale Proteomics Development

Combining innovative proteomics application with Massively Parallel Technologies’ high-performance software technology holds the potential to transform speed and accuracy of disease biomarker discovery.

LOUISVILLE, Colo. (PRWEB) September 7, 2006

Massively Parallel Technologies, Inc. (Massively), a provider of on-demand high-performance computing (HPC), announces it has entered into a cooperative agreement with the University of Colorado for the development and commercialization of an innovative breakthrough in proteomics analysis.

Working with Mark Duncan, Ph. D., professor at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center (UCDHSC), departments of pediatrics, medicine and cellular and departmental biology and director of Proteomics Shared Resources, and his team, the two groups will apply Massively’s patented parallel processing software technology to a protein identification software application developed by UCDHSC. The novel analysis software is used to identify proteins from tandem mass spectrometry. UCDHSC’s unique approach will enable faster and more accurate results than what is currently possible but requires tremendous compute power to process the massive amounts of data in a practical timeframe. The compute scaling efficiencies and increase in performance in time-to-answer made possible by Massively’s technology will take the UCDHSC application to the next level of performance and usability, required to break through existing data analysis bottlenecks in the field of proteomics.

Proteomics aims to define all proteins that are expressed by a cell, organ or organism. Identifying and fully characterizing the human proteome holds enormous potential to aid in clinical medicine and to enhance our understanding of human biology. The use of biomarkers for early disease diagnosis, better disease classification, predicting the outcome and response to a given therapy, and identifying new and high-quality targets for therapeutic intervention are just some of the potential benefits arising through proteomics.

“We have invested a tremendous amount of resources to develop and validate the science behind this application. As a result, our application delivers high sequence coverage while reducing false positives and negatives in comparison to existing applications,” Duncan said. “The reality for us, however, is that without the high-performance computing resources, expertise and innovation that Massively brings to the table, this application would not be of practical use due to its computational demands.”

Once proven, Massively will have two options to bring the solution to market and make it available to researchers world-wide. The first is via Massively’s Biotech Virtual Power Center – an Internet accessible, on-demand suite of software applications delivering supercomputing performance at PC pricing. The second option is to license the solution to the biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. In addition to the initial protein identification application, Massively and UCDHSC are working together to identify and parallelize other key applications that promise to break through the data analysis bottleneck currently stifling the field of proteomics.

Ten for 2010: Get Spa Smart Tips to Help You Live Healthier This Year

Worn-out from ringing-in 2010? After a season filled with relatives, parties, spending and stress, you may be screaming, "What about me?" Healthy living expert Mindy Terry hears your call. Having visited more than 500 spas, Terry shares insider tips to help you Get Spa Smart and make 2010 your healthiest year to date.

Atlanta, Ga. (PRWEB) January 6, 2010

Worn-out from ringing-in 2010? After a season filled with relatives, parties, spending and stress, you may be screaming, "What about me?" Healthy living expert Mindy Terry hears your call. As the President of Creative Spa Concepts, this busy mom travels the world creating amazing and timeless spa experiences for her clients.

Having visited more than 500 spas, Terry shares insider tips to help you Get Spa Smart and make 2010 your healthiest year to date. "There are amazingly beautiful spas around the globe, but if you think you have to go away to an exotic location to live spa, think again," said Terry. "Living spa is about knowing how to slow down and focus on making every situation more positive and less stressful. For little to no money, you can Get Spa Smart at home, in the office or even while waiting in the school pick-up line."

Ready to Get Spa Smart? Here's the Top Ten for 2010:

1. Got the post-holiday blues? A few minutes spent journaling will bring sunshine into your life. Set aside time every day to write everything you are grateful for in your journal. Re-read your thoughts when you write new ones and you will find that the blues will dissipate and you will become filled with gratitude and happiness.
2. Spend your life in your car picking up the kids and running errands? Avoid road rage and ease into calm by popping in your favorite spa-inspired CD or tuning your radio station to classical music.
3. Feeling as if a few extra pounds have been added? You're not alone. The New York Times reports that people gain an average of five pounds during the holiday season. One way to avoid future weight gain is by practicing mindful eating. As a form of meditation, mindful eating can be done in the office or home. Essentially, you want to slow down and feel the food on your tongue. Focus on the texture and smell while chewing slowly. When you eat slowly, your body is filled more quickly and, because you are focusing on the food, your choices become healthier.
4. Try a quick detox. Add Epsom Salts to your bath or eucalyptus spray in your shower. Make the water as warm as you can handle (note: avoid altogether if you have high blood pressure or heart problems). Stay in the bath or shower for 15 minutes and then wrap in a heavy towel or robe and lie on the bed for appx. 20 minutes. You will sweat out a lot of toxins. End with a cool shower, lotion and lots of water. In addition to detoxing the body, this practice will help with cold and sinus symptoms.
5. Marma-Point massage is also great for sinus troubles. A marma point is a juncture on the body where two or more types of tissue meet, such as muscles, veins, ligaments, bones or joints. To begin the massage, take a drop of your favorite oil, rub into your palms, cup them and inhale for three deep, belly breaths. Then, use your fingers to hold and apply some pressure on your jaw bone. Next, run fingers up to temples and apply comfortable pressure and hold. Slowly rotate fingers clockwise to relax, counter-clockwise to energize. Move to the third eye (directly above nose) and apply comfortable pressure for a few seconds. Transition to your thumbs and slide down to the side of your nose where your eyes meet, pull up towards your crown and hold, come back down to your nose as if you are smoothing the pages of a book. Try a few times to open your sinuses. The exercise takes about 90 seconds.
6. Having trouble finding time to exercise? When possible, skip the elevator/escalator and take the stairs. When traveling, bypass the airport tram and walk the concourses instead. If you work in the city, look for opportunities to walk to meetings rather than taking a cab. A brisk pace is always best to get the heart rate going.
7. If you work out of your home or are a stay-at-home mom - start a walking club. Pick a day of the week and stick to it. You'll enjoy the benefits you receive from exercising and chatting at the same time!
8. Feeling a little down? Chocolate, mandarin orange and vanilla are wonderful food-inspired scents that instantly lift a mood. Use essential oils to make a spray for your pillows, use as your signature perfume, or place a drop of oil directly under the nose to breathe in the uplifting scent throughout the day. Battle depression and soothe dry winter skin all at once with Terry's favorite Vanilla-Ginger Milk Bath. Add 1 tsp. of vanilla, 2 tsp. of ginger (fresh or powdered) and ½ tsp. of cinnamon to ½ cup of honey and blend. Add the honey mixture along with ½ cup of dry milk to warm running bathwater, relax and enjoy.
9. Quick tip: if you have a non-scented candle, pour your favorite essential oil in the basin (make sure the candle has burned a few times to create a basin). The oil will fill your house with amazing scents.
10. Another quick tip: add lemon and orange slices, a bay leaf, cloves and a cinnamon stick to a pot of water. Let it simmer on the stovetop.

Georgetown Report Finds Progress On Children's Health Care Coverage Threatened By Economy

Georgetown Report Finds Progress On Children's Health Care Coverage Threatened By Economy

Increasing unemployment, declining state revenues, and a growing affordability gap are causing an increase in the number of people losing health coverage.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) November 17, 2008

Ten years of progress on children's health care coverage is threatened by increasing unemployment (http://ccf. georgetown. edu), declining state revenues, and a growing affordability gap between family income and the cost of healthcare coverage, according to a report released today by the Center for Children and Families at Georgetown University's Health Policy Institute.

"When a parent loses a job, the family often loses its only access to affordable healthcare coverage for themselves and their children," said Jocelyn Guyer, Deputy Executive Director of the research and policy center. "Behind the alarming unemployment numbers are a lot of uninsured families struggling to keep their kids safe and healthy."

The report estimates that over the past year, 4.1 million people have lost their employer-based coverage. Of the 4.1 million, about 1.2 million were children. If the unemployment rate rises to 7.5% as many economists are predicting, an estimated 6.5 million more people will lose employer-sponsored health care coverage including 1.9 million children.

To illustrate the impact losing healthcare coverage can have on a family, the report highlights the story of the Secrest family of Martinsville, Virginia (http://ccf/georgetown. edu). Greg Secrest, a father of three, lost his job when the furniture manufacturer he worked for moved his job overseas. Secrest said he would have to spend more than $1,200 per month to maintain his family's healthcare coverage - an amount that far exceeds his ability to pay. He applied for FAMIS, the Virginia State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and is waiting to learn if his sons will qualify for coverage.

"Once I hear my kids have health care coverage, it will be a load off my mind," said Secrest. "Making sure the boys are healthy and happy can make the rest of my family's problems seem small. Everything we have can be replaced with time and hard work but they cannot."

Programs that help provide families with the opportunity to purchase affordable healthcare coverage, such as SCHIP and Medicaid, are crucial lifelines for families struggling in these difficult economic times, according to the report. However, these programs are threatened by the "vice grip" of increasing demand and decreasing state resources.

"The nation is at a critical juncture in its commitment to coverage for America's families," said the CCF report. "It must decide whether it will sustain and strengthen this commitment or allow it to fall victim to the fiscal pressures confronting states and the federal government."

The report identifies options policymakers could consider to address the crisis including temporarily increasing federal support for Medicaid and promptly reauthorizing SCHIP to soften the impact of the economic downturn on uninsured children. Copies of the report "Keeping the Promise to Children and Families in Tough Economic Times" are available from http://ccf. georgetown. edu (http://ccf. georgetown. edu).

CCF is an independent, nonpartisan research and policy center based at Georgetown University's Health Policy Institute whose mission is to expand and improve health coverage for America's children and families. For more information visit http://ccf. georgetown. edu (http://ccf. georgetown. edu) or call (202) 687-0880.
