Architecture for Humanity challenged architects, designers and medical professionals from around the world to design a mobile HIV/AIDS health clinic. Designers were given six months to develop schemes for a fully equipped, mobile medical unit and HIV/AIDS treatment center that could be used for not only testing, prevention and treatment of the disease, but also to disseminate information regarding the virus and provide basic health care services. By the project deadline, November 1, 2001, More than 482 teams representing 49 nations answered the call. A seven-person panel comprised of internationally renowned architects and HIV/AIDS professionals will meet in New York from November 22 to November 23, 2002 to jury the entries.

A detailed set of criteria was developed with the support and advice from a team of over one-hundred medical professionals and HIV/AIDS researchers. During the submission period, over 126,000 visitors from 108 countries logged on to www. architectureforhumanity. org to learn about this initiative. In total, more than 850 architects, medical professionals, industrial designers and students in the field of design and medicine took part in this truly global response, submitting highly innovative and cost-efficient schemes.

A seven-person panel comprised of internationally renowned architects and HIV/AIDS professionals will meet in New York from November 22 to November 23, 2002 to jury the entries. The panelists will include: Toshiko Mori, Chair of the Department of Architecture, Harvard Graduate Design School; Dr. Reuben Mutiso PhD, architect/planner and principal of Tectura International in Nairobi, Kenya; Rick Joy, architect and principal of Rick Joy Architects; Jennifer Siegal, architect and principal of Office of Mobile Design; Kate Bourne, Executive Vice President of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI); Dr. Peter R. Lamptey M. D., President of the AIDS Institute, Family Health International; and Dr Shaffiq Essajee, Director of the AIDS Research and Family Care Clinic in Mombasa, Kenya.

The jury will select first, second, and third place entries along with the best student entry and ten honorable mentions.

Finalists will be announced in New York on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2002.

An exhibition of the winning entries and selected designs will open on December 6, 2002 at the Van Alen Institute in New York and will be on display until December 20, 2002. With the support of Virgin Atlantic and W Hotels, this exhibit is set to travel in 2003 within the United States and internationally. Money raised from the $35 submission fee (waived for entries from developing countries), donations and additional fundraising activities will be used to build a prototype of the first place concept. Once developed, it is hoped that refined versions of this cost-effective and mobile design can be built for Africa—and eventually, easily replicated in other regions around the world.

Second Phase has Potential to Encompass 100 Area Practitioners Serving Nearly 100K Members in Region

CDPHP® recently announced the second phase of its patient-centered medical home (PCMH) pilot, which was originally launched in May 2008. Developed to achieve improvements in the quality and efficiency of health care through transformation of the way primary care is practiced and reimbursed, the second phase of the pilot is expected to encompass 100 area practitioners serving nearly 100K members in the Capital Region.

Current pilot participants Community Care/Latham Medical Group, Community Care/Schodack, and CapitalCare/Clifton Park Family Practice have each undergone 18 months of practice transformation and have just concluded their first year of testing a new payment model. The second phase expansion will increase practice participation from these three practices to up to 24 practices.

“The CDPHP Board of Directors authorized the expansion of this pilot to include an additional 21 practices, beginning in September 2010,” reports John D. Bennett, MD, president and CEO, CDPHP. “The decision to make further investments based on preliminary data illustrates the sense of urgency felt by the board, if there is any true hope of achieving the initial objective of restoring primary care.”

The announcement was made to the medical community at the recent one-day technology conference, e-Forum 2010: Deciphering the Meaning of “Meaningful Use” and Enhancing the Value of Health Care Delivery. The event, jointly sponsored by CDPHP and the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY), hosted more than 100 area physicians and practice managers. The sessions educated physicians about what they need to know and do now in order to be eligible to tap into the $19 billion meaningful use incentives from the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, and how the medical home concept can improve the quality of patient care while enhancing primary care physicians’ income.

“Although it is early to draw definitive conclusions, the three initial pilot practices have demonstrated improvements in both quality of care delivered and the efficiency with which they have delivered it,” said Bruce Nash, MD, MBA, chief medical officer, CDPHP.

CDPHP PCMH Pilot: Phase Two
CDPHP plans to select 21 additional primary care practices (adult primary care, family practice, general practice, and internal medicine) by June 2, 2010 with the official launch scheduled for September 2010.

Selected practices will display strong leadership and a stable practice culture, and serve a significant number of CDPHP patients. The practice will need to demonstrate commitment in achieving NCQA Level III Medical home and enhancing access, as well as an overall willingness by practice leadership to participate and openly collaborate with CDPHP. In addition, due to the significance of technology in the medical home model, practices utilizing EMR and ePrescribing are preferred.

Phase 2 practices that receive PCMH level III certification and have been active participants in the 12-month CDPHP-sponsored transformation process will be financially rewarded under a new payment model commencing in fall of 2011. The move to the new payment model will be contingent on outcomes of the pilot evaluation.

The mold tests were conducted by an independent lab that utilizes ASTM standards, one of the most universally-accepted testing parameters. Two tests were conducted: ASTM 3273-00 and ASTM G21-96. The first and most common test for wall surface materials had panels with American Clay's original formulation (Loma) hang for four weeks in an atmosphere ideal for production of mold growth. The panels included every permutation of the Loma clay - alone, with add mix, with the company's new Mud Glue™, and even one without American Clay's current mold-inhibiting additive, Borax. Control panels that will not prevent growth and are a known level were also included in the test. At the end of the cycle, all American Clay panels showed no signs of mold growth, a rating of '10' per the test standards.

The second test is one that shows fungus resistance. A fungus culture was placed directly onto the product (i. e. panel) to see if the product's environment would allow for further growth. The tests on Loma combined with their new Mud Glue™ resulted in a "zero" test score, meaning no traces of any fungal growth were observed.

American Clay earth plasters are created without any modern preservatives or fungicides, and the tests show that they reduce the propensity for surface mold growth. Additionally, the product is a NFPA type A, UBC Class I non-flammable material (per per ASTM E84). When DRI opened their global headquarters, they installed a fitness center that has seen mediocre use. And those that are using the facilities aren't exercising properly. Additionally, faced with rising insurance premiums and an increase in medical and prescription benefits usage, Cloobeck teamed with Steve Bell, Executive Vice President, Global Human Resources, to proactively tackle the health and wellness issues plaguing the workforce. "We reached out to our insurance broker and brainstormed ideas with our in-house benefits and training teams to come up with solutions and tools to motivate team members, build morale and get them feeling better about themselves. The 90-day DRIvenSM to Fitness program includes team weigh-ins and outs, and the Company has brought a nutritionist and professional trainer on board for the duration of the program.
