"I am happy to welcome ASC NYC’s expanded presence in East Harlem," said Congressman Charles Rangel. "It is essential that we provide these types of services in Upper Manhattan, and the Keith Haring ASC Harlem Center has the potential to be a great resource to our community. I look forward to a continued relationship with AIDS Service Center."

The Keith Haring ASC Harlem Center renovation will enable ASC to expand HIV testing and access to care services to Harlem residents in a setting that feels like ‘home.’ “Connecting people to medical care, helping them find housing, and educating about health promotion, are all part of our work,” says ASC NYC CEO Sharen Duke.

Election 2010: State-by-State Data; How Many People with Mental Illness are Being Served?

Election 2010: State-by-State Data; How Many People with Mental Illness are Being Served?

Are Candidates Addressing the Facts?

Arlington, VA (PRWEB) September 30, 2010

State mental health agencies (SMHAs) provide direct services to between 15 to 60 percent of people living with serious mental illnesses in their states, according to state-by-state figures reported today by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI (http://www. nami. org)).

State mental health services are being cut dramatically, however, even as need has increased due to the nation’s economic crisis. Medicaid is the other major funding source of mental health care for people with serious mental illness (http://www. nami. org/Template. cfm? Section=By_Illness), but also has been subject to cuts (see table below).

“State mental health agencies cannot do it alone,” said NAMI Executive Director Michael J. Fitzpatrick. “They serve only a fraction of those who need help—and they struggle to do so with shrinking budgets.”

Even without budget cuts, low percentages of people with serious mental illness served by SMHAs may point to weakness in the reach of a state’s overall system of care. Congress has some responsibility to help strengthen state mental health care systems. Federal mental health block grants have been reduced or frozen over the past 10 years. The impact of cuts in Medicaid-funded state programs also has been softened only through use of federal stimulus funds.

The state figures are offered as part of NAMI’s fourth alert in an Election 2010 series reminding editors, reporters and others to ask all candidates what they intend to do about the nation's mental health crisis. “Protecting and strengthening state mental health care must be part of the Election 2010 dialogue. In editorial board meetings and community forums, please ask candidates what they will do to help,” Fitzpatrick said.

“Every issue in the election involves mental health care—from unemployment to troops returning from war. For example, unemployed workers are four times more likely to report symptoms of mental illness and veterans are twice as likely as civilians to die from suicide.”

The National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD (http://nasmhpd. org/)) Research Institute reported in Feb. 2010:
Total SMHA budget reductions from FY2009 to FY2011 were about $2 billion. Approximately 90 percent of SMHAs were experiencing budget cuts in FY2010. Almost 75 percent had experienced cuts in FY2009 and the same level proportion expected cuts in FY2011. Over 50 percent have responded by cutting community mental health services and reducing the number of people served. At the same time, SMHAs experienced increased demand for community services, including crisis services, emergency rooms and hospital acute care.

“Weak state mental health care systems end up costing communities more—through lost jobs and careers, broken families, more homelessness, higher insurance costs, more welfare and much more expensive costs for hospital emergency rooms, nursing homes, schools, police and courts, jails and prisons,” Fitzpatrick said.

Below is a list of states that have adults with serious mental illness (SMI), rounded to 1,000, and the percent served by State Mental Health Agency (SMHA).

To Physicians: New Discoveries in Acupressure Promise Everything From Alertness to Pain and Stress Management

To Physicians: New Discoveries in Acupressure Promise Everything From Alertness to Pain and Stress Management

University of Michigan researchers tested self-applied acupressure to help students stay awake in class, with promising results. But practitioners of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) add focused thought to the formula and relieve pain, improve sports performance, alleviate stress, and more.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) June 14, 2006

According to University of Michigan researchers, do-it-yourself acupressure can keep students awake in class without caffeine or high-sugar snacks. Their results, reported in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, agree with what acupuncturists have been saying for millennia – that stimulating key acupuncture points improves the body’s flow of energy for optimum health.

But the student alertness study used only physical stimulation. Students tapped on the tops of their heads and on their legs, feet, and hands for several minutes at a time. Practitioners of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), which combines acupressure tapping with focused thought, report significant results for not only mental alertness but relief from pain, stress, anxiety, phobias, and other problems. Anyone can learn EFT by downloading the free EFT Manual at http://www. emofree. com/downloadeftmanual. asp? ref=prw-surg-anx (http://www. emofree. com/downloadeftmanual. asp? ref=prw-surg-anx).

“It’s always good to see modern science examine ancient healing techniques like acupuncture or acupressure,” says Los Angeles physician Eric Robins, MD, “because these techniques do work. But when you add intention or focused thought, they work even better.”

Dr. Robins, a urologist, teaches EFT to patients who suffer from chronic infections and other problems that don’t respond to conventional treatment. “Western medicine ignores the mind-body connection,” he explains, “but our emotions are at the root of almost every illness. Past traumas can be stored in the body, and if you don’t have a way to release them, they can cause all kinds of symptoms.”

Dr. Robins’ patients respond so well to EFT, which he teaches them in five to ten minutes, that in some cases their scheduled surgery gets cancelled or they no longer need medication.

EFT’s basic premise is that the underlying cause of every negative emotion and almost every physical symptom is a disruption of the body’s energy flow along the same meridians that were mapped over 4,000 years ago by Chinese physicians.

“Acupuncturists use needles to stimulate key points along the meridians,” says EFT’s founder, Gary Craig, “but in EFT, we tap on these points. Tapping requires less precision, so it’s easy for almost anyone, including children, to get good results.”

Craig, a Stanford-trained engineer, has collected thousands of reports from EFT practitioners around the world. In most cases, he says, people using it for the first time for pain, impaired range of motion, stress, phobias, physical symptoms, test anxiety, sports performance problems, or other conditions report significant improvement.

“EFT is one of my favorite healing tools,” says Dr. Robins. “It’s the perfect complement to conventional medicine, and I strongly recommend it for everyone.”

Complete instructions are provided in the free EFT Manual, which over 300,000 have downloaded from the EFT website. Another 10,000 download it each month. The manual, which has been translated by volunteer practitioners into nine languages, explains everything one needs to know in order to try EFT. It can be freely downloaded at http://www. emofree. com/downloadeftmanual. asp? ref=prw-surg-anx (http://www. emofree. com/downloadeftmanual. asp? ref=prw-surg-anx)

The Food Detective Reminds Us to Wake up America and Take Back our Health

The Food Detective Reminds Us to Wake up America and Take Back our Health

"With so many fad diets floating around, it is sometimes difficult to know what makes sense and what is just hype," says the Food Detective, author of BEYOND LOW FAT BAKING: CANCER FIGHITNG FOODS FOR THE MILLENNIUM, a complete soyfoods baking book by Skyward Publishing (www. skywardpublishing. com). Staying healthy requires simple techniques-cut some of the fat, cut calories, eat a balanced, healthy diet, and exercise."

(PRWEB) January 23, 2004

World famous nutritionists Adel Davis in the sixties warned Americans that our health was in jeopardy if we didn't change our dietary habits, and she was right. Despite a multi-billion dollar diet industry, Americans since the sixties have grown heavier and heavier, and diseases such as cancer and heart disease have risen to alarming heights. . "Health is on a lot of people's minds," says the Food Detective, "but we haven't really gotten dirty with cleaning up our poor dietary choices. Make it an ongoing resolution to eat more vegetables, drink more water, exercise more and stick to healthy eating practices."

"Eating right includes more than following trendy diets," says the Food Detective. The American Institute of Cancer Research advises that we eat a wide variety of food to insure we receive multiple nutrients daily. "That is part of the problem with trendy diets," says the Food Detective. "Those diets sometimes force us to eat large amounts of foods such as proteins while leaving off those much needed fruits, vegetables, and whole-grains. Such dietary choices may put us at risk for sickness and disease. Scientists remind us that they simply don't know all the nutrients in foods, so eating from a few food groups or over eating in one food group may be harmful in the end. A great way to expand your eating choices is by adding higher fiber, higher protein grains such as flax and soy." This Golden Flax-N-Soy Bread from The Food Detectives upcoming cookbook THE JOY OF FLAX & SOY (www. bestsoy. com) is made in a bread machine and is an easy, fast, and absolutely mouth-watering way to build in extra nutrition and eat a wider variety of grains. Packed with ground flax seeds and soy flour, it is higher in protein than ordinary breads, has more fiber, and is abundant in a multiple of nutrients.

Local Businesses to Support American Cancer Society: New MotherTongues Sisu T-shirt Speaks About Courageous Women Surviving Cancer

Local Businesses to Support American Cancer Society: New MotherTongues Sisu T-shirt Speaks About Courageous Women Surviving Cancer

Two local businesses, MotherTongues T-shirts and The Bridge, are collaborating to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. It all started around a new t-shirt depicting an inspiring word: Sisu is a Finnish word for determination or "to have guts". $1 of every MotherTongues Sisu t-shirt or tote bag sold, will be donated to the American Cancer Society. The Bridge, a Fair Trade store in downtown Holland, Michigan, will donate 20% of their sales on Monday October 26th to the American Cancer Society.

Holland, MI (PRWEB) October 21, 2009

Two local businesses, MotherTongues T-shirts and The Bridge, are collaborating to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. It all started around a t-shirt.

Have you survived cancer, fought depression, gone through a divorce, or struggled through a difficult patch in your life? Then you need to be acquainted with the Finnish word Sisu (pronounced see-soo). Sisu can roughly be translated into English as determination, perseverance, tenacity, or "to have guts".

Michelle Hamman, owner of MotherTongues T-shirts collaborated with Lisa Gidlow Moriarty (www. DancingWomanLabyrinth. com), from Stillwater, MN, to design a Sisu t-shirt and tote bag to portray this inspiring word. The design incorporates the Dancing Woman Labyrinth, created by Lisa in response to her mother's death to cancer and her own cancer survival. The Dancing Woman knows grief, she bears the tears and celebrates the days of joy and survival. She is a symbol of women's strength and compassion.

"I love how MotherTongues celebrates unity in diversity by selecting and honoring particular words from a variety of cultures, words that can't be translated without losing their meaning, words that have something to do with community, justice, living well," says Kim Douglas, a MotherTongues customer. "We can all wear or carry words that connect us to one another, that help us to celebrate the beautiful diversity of our amazing planet."

MotherTongues will donate $1 of every Sisu t-shirt or tote bag sold, to the American Cancer Society. The Bridge, a Fair Trade store in downtown Holland, will donate 20% of their sales on Monday October 26th to the American Cancer Society. It will be open 10 am-8.30 pm with refreshments served for this special event. All MotherTongues apparel is available at The Bridge on 8th Street in Holland, as well as online at www. MotherTongues. com.

MotherTongues offers a line of t-shirts and related clothing that seek to cultivate cultural understanding, the building of community, and mindful living. Printed on the clothing are words from various cultures that encourage spiritual growth (zen), nonviolence (satyagraha), justice (shalom/salam), healthy relationships (ubuntu; himdag; gezellig; abrazo; philotimo; sisu), and ecological and environmental mindfulness (dadirri; lagom). Since the words used have no direct English equivalents, poetic descriptions of the words are printed on the products. All MotherTongues t-shirts, bags, and aprons are printed on 100% organic cotton made with Fair Trade principles. For more information, please visit www. MotherTongues. com.

LÛCRUM Forms Strategic Alliance with AnswerPal

LÛCRUM Forms Strategic Alliance with AnswerPal

LÛCRUM, Inc., a Cincinnati based independent software development and consulting firm today announced a strategic partnership with AnswerPal, India, an IT services provider specializing in eBusiness and Enterprise Integration solutions.

(PRWEB) April 20, 2002

LÛCRUM, Inc., a Cincinnati based independent software development and consulting firm today announced a strategic partnership with AnswerPal, India, an IT services provider specializing in eBusiness and Enterprise Integration solutions.

Under the agreement, LÛCRUM plans to offer new global outsourcing services to its Fortune 1000 clients and will use AnswerPal’s offshore development center (“ODC”) to leverage the additional capacity and expertise in Microsoft. net technologies.

The ODC will offer 24x7 development and significantly save development costs for LÛCRUM’s customers. LÛCRUM will continue to execute core competency functions locally such as strategic planning, problem solving, design, architecture and project management for the business intelligence applications. The partnership is a result of customers continuing to ask LÛCRUM for more choices: the traditional local services that LÛCRUM has provided them in the past, as well as the emerging cost-conscious onshore/offshore service offering.

“In today’s economy, organizations are constantly under pressure to do more with less and to do things faster and better in order to differentiate themselves from their competition.” “Yet with slashed budgets and today’s tight economy, hiring additional personnel with the expertise to accomplish these goals is not always an option,” explains John Bostick, President and CEO of LÛCRUM.

“Our goal at LÛCRUM is to help our clients identify and solve their specific business needs using the most economical solution,” said Bostick. Our partnership with AnswerPal enables us to deliver additional ‘just-in-time’ technical expertise plus the highest quality of services to our clients at a lower cost.”

AnswerPal will open an offshore project office and development center for LÛCRUM in Bangalore, the silicon valley of India. The development center will staff highly skilled IT professionals aiding LÛCRUM’s projects with F1000 companies. AnswerPal is known for its creative IT services model, which offers US companies a unique service to set up an “ODC”. The “ODC” employees are professional developers of the US company, yet the US company is not required to have any US management offshore, eliminating the need to cross some of the cultural and bureaucratic boundaries to take advantage of India’s low-cost, high quality talent pool. Fort Lauderdale, Florida – July 26, 2002 –A new revolutionary appliance for processing what would typically be fried foods without grease has been invented. For the past five decades deep fat frying has dominated the QSR segment of the food service industry. However with all the emphasis on health and low fat diets today there is finally an alternative to cooking with grease. Imagine fresh chicken wings cooked in 5 minutes or baby back ribs in less than 8 minutes done to perfection. The Revolutionary new “WingKing” is an innovative unit virtually cooking most foods typically done in a fryer without a drop of grease using a special patented process. In fact the US patent office granted it a patent in June 2002 acknowledging the non-obvious and unique nature of this new Remco appliance. Remco has to its credit other unique and patented devices and methods for cooking various foods utilizing infrared energy.

You may remember Remco for their display Flame Roasting Rotisserie which processes foods in a very special way using infrared as its chief cooking energy. This rapid cooking allows the foods to retain most of their natural juices and flavors minimizing product loss while yielding golden brown meats and poultry in record time. Through the years of the “Rotisserie Rage” Remco had equipment in operations such as

Kenny Rogers, Miami Subs MJÂ’s Roasthouse, Cluckers Wood Roasted Chicken just to name few.

Then came the flagship of the Remco product line the Millennium 2000 Carousel Brick Oven. With its record setting 90 second pizza bake time it outpaces the nearest competition being 4 times faster and producing perfect products, the M-2 as its affectionately known, has the potential of over 300 personal pizzas per hour utilizing again infrared energy as its primary baking energy together with a hot brick, and consuming less than 50,000 BTU’s per hour all in a 5’x 5’ footprint and no hood required. Remco’s exploitation of infrared energy in its products makes them a leader in the infrared technology and in the field of fast and economical food processing. It’s been rumored that Remco has a infrared powered Pasta machine in the design development phase which may also set new records. In fact, in a review of their equipment echo’s Remco’s mission statement “Tomorrows Technology Today.”

ReForest London Blossoms with ZOO Media Group

ReForest London Blossoms with ZOO Media Group

Concerned and committed to helping environmental causes, ZOO Media group Inc. is donating their marketing, graphic design and web design services to ReForest London to help engage individuals, groups and businesses in planting and caring for native trees in neighbourhoods, schoolyards, parks and natural areas in London, Ontario Canada.

London, Ontario (PRWEB) August 12, 2009

London: Drawing inspiration from nature for their wildly creative designs, London Ontario based Marketing and Graphic Design Agency - ZOO Media Group (http://www. zoomedia. ca/)- has always been concerned and committed to helping environmental causes. And that's why donating ZOO's services to ReForest London seemed like such a natural fit. ZMG will be providing marketing consulting and graphic design services to strengthen the ReForest London brand and increase overall awareness and participation in this very worthy initiative.

This summer, ZOO Media Group created ReForest London's first professionally designed Annual Report for 2008 (http://www. reforestlondon. ca/sites/default/files/content/documents/ReForest_London_Annual_Report_WEB. pdf), and is also working on a new promotional brochure. And coming this fall, ZMG will help launch a commemorative tree program for the non-profit organization and will also design new web banners for ReForest London's website.

"Providing our services to help promote the annual Huron SPCA Dinner and Auction (http://www. zoomedia. ca/huron-spca-2) each year has been such a rewarding and satisfying experience for us," says Chris Dugas, ZOO Media Group's Production and Planning Director. "When the opportunity came along to work with ReForest London, we really didn't hesitate because we truly support what they are doing." Dugas went on to say, "We have always felt that London had to take back their title as the Forest City. We spend a lot of time in the various wooded areas in and around London hiking with our family. If we can play a small part in increasing the awareness concerning the plight of our shrinking green space and encourage people to take action to ensure a healthier environment for future generations - that's something we can feel good about."

With a small but motivated committee, ReForest London does not have the budget or staff to effectively market their budding organization. "We recognized early on that in order to get our message out and increase participation and awareness concerning our initiative, we needed the help of a professional marketing agency," mentioned Julie Ryan, Executive Director of ReForest London. "That's why we are thrilled to be working with an experienced and innovative marketing partner like ZOO Media Group to develop and enhance our image in London and to better communicate our mission and successes."

ReForest London engages individuals, groups and businesses in planting and caring for trees in neighbourhoods and natural areas throughout London. ReForest London Goals include:
*Empowerment - Empower community groups, businesses, and individuals to plant and care for trees
*Ecosystem Health - Improve London's environmental health through planting trees and shrubs in natural areas, parks, yards and along streets
*Education - Educate Londoners about the importance of trees and how to plant and care for them

When Earth Day Is Everyday At The Office, Used Office Furniture Recycling

When Earth Day Is Everyday At The Office, Used Office Furniture Recycling

Learn how one company is making a difference in helping keep our planet healthy by recycling used office furniture. You probably take the desk and chair you're currently sitting at for granted, but did you know that re-manufacturing just 40 workstations diverts one whole tractor-trailer load of furniture from a landfill?

Morgantown, PA (PRWEB) April 21, 2010

Earth day is here, but for office furniture recycling company Ethosource out of Morgantown, PA, Earth Day isn't just an annual event but a concept they take to heart and the driving force behind their unique green business.

Based in an industrial complex, Ethosource's warehouse and refurbishing facility seems an unlikely setting for a green business that is saving tons of used office furniture (http://www. ethosource. com/) from heading to the landfill each day. Instead of taking up landfill space, Ethosource refurbishes used office furniture and restores it to near perfect condition. And for a business looking to buy office furniture and help mother nature in the process, buying Ethosource's furniture will save them anywhere from 30-70% of the cost of buying new.

Ethosource started out by specializing in refurbishing the Herman Miller Ethospace line of high quality modular cubicles, but has grown over the years to include office furniture from a wide array of brands. Ethosource provides a turn-key service from start to finish, from drafting floor plans, to delivery and installation. The company makes it easy and economical to be green in the workplace.

Ethosource can help your business be more than just green, they can help you make it official by helping you achieve LEED certification. USGBC’s LEED certification, which refers to the level of sustainability associated with a building, is becoming increasingly popular. There are four different possible LEED certification levels; certified, silver, gold, and platinum.

For example, EthoSource played a significant role in a recent 900 cubicle LEED Platinum project in Southeastern, Pennsylvania. The newly constructed, four-story, 200,000 square foot facility is one of less than 125 buildings in the United States to have achieved platinum level certification. Some of the building’s sustainable features include: a sod roof with native vegetation, rain water collection, energy efficient building systems, an open plan layout perfect for letting in day light, triple glazed glass walls, and geothermal wells. In the construction of the building, the company also took advantage of recycled and locally available materials wherever possible, which helped reduce the carbon footprint.

This same green approach was required for the purchase and installation of 900 employee cubicle workstations. With this in mind, the project managers discovered EthoSource and saw them as the ideal supplier to provide them with the 900 refurbished workstations the building would require.

EthoSource was able to present a creative green solution which included the maximum reutilization of their existing cubicles, the supplementation of refurbished workstations, and the blending in of new product.. All of these steps were accomplished in a collaborative effort that met the customer’s design standards, budgetary goals, and LEED objectives.

If you're planning to expand or downsize your office, give Ethosource a call to see how they might be able to help. For additional information, contact Mark Miller or visit http://www. ethosource. com/ (http://www. ethosource. com/)

Study Links Childhood Trauma to Serious Illnesses in Adults

Study Links Childhood Trauma to Serious Illnesses in Adults

An increasing number of studies are linking childhood adversities with adult health challenges. The ACE Study confirms that children who experience trauma have a far greater risk of developing serious and life-threatening diseases. But conventional medicine seems ill-equipped to prevent childhood trauma from developing into adult issues. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is a drug-free treatment option uniquely designed to address emotional issues in children and adults and reduce their likelihood of developing serious diseases.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) June 28, 2006

Children, adolescents and adults can take charge and change their future health by using Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) to address traumatic experiences. Research repeatedly shows that children who experience unresolved trauma and adversity are likely to become adults with compromised physical and emotional health. Conventional medicine appears unprepared to supply solutions to prevent childhood trauma from translating into adult illness.

EFT is a do-it-yourself acupressure technique that anybody can use to halt depression, anxiety, anger and fear. It involves fingertip tapping on select acupressure points while focusing on the problem in question. This adaptation of acupressure claims an 80% success rate in calming the body and mind’s response to trauma. It and can be learned freely by downloading the EFT Manual at http://www. emofree. com/downloadeftmanual. asp? ref=prw-childdepresscw (http://www. emofree. com/downloadeftmanual. asp? ref=prw-childdepresscw)

Vincent J Felitti, MD, co-authored the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study that compared 17,400 adults’ health status with decades-old childhood experiences. According to Dr. Felitti, “The ACE Study reveals a powerful relation between our emotional experiences as children and our adult emotional health, physical health, and major causes of mortality in the United States.”

The ACE Study findings categorized adverse childhood experiences (physical, emotional or sexual abuse, dysfunctional households with family issues like violence, alcoholism, mental illness and depression). A person who had four of these adverse childhood experiences (ACE score of 4) was 390 percent more likely to have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) than someone reporting no adverse childhood experiences. A person with and ACE score of more than 4 was 460 percent more likely to be a depressed adult than someone with an ACE score of zero.

Gary Craig, founder of EFT explains, “The ACE Study and similar research is finally coming to the conclusion that unresolved childhood emotional issues affect adult health. However, practitioners of EFT have known this since 1995. Furthermore, EFT practitioners all over the world have been erasing traumas associated with adverse childhood experiences for more than a decade.”

Although most conventional physicians have yet to learn about EFT, this simple technique fills a void that cannot be filled by prescription medications or traditional psychotherapy. According to the theory behind EFT, childhood trauma causes a severe disruption in the body’s energy meridian system (also known as Chi or Qi), and unless this disruption is corrected, physical and emotional symptoms and coping behaviors are likely to erupt as the traumatized child ages. EFT corrects that energy disruption and its accompanying physical and emotional symptoms.

Says Dr Fellitti, “Clearly, we have shown that adverse childhood experiences are both common and destructive. This combination makes them one of the most important, if not the most important, determinants of the health and well-being of the nation. Unfortunately, these problems are both painful to recognize and difficult to cope with. Most physicians would far rather deal with traditional organic disease.”

Dr. Felitti indicates that the treatment and prevention implications of the ACE Study are daunting to conventional doctors. “Why would one want to leave the relative comfort of traditional organic disease and enter this area of threatening uncertainty that none of us has been trained to deal with?”

Gary Craig says, “Thousands of EFT Practitioners are currently working with children and adults, teaching them EFT and helping them to resolve complex emotional traumas. In addition to laypersons, medical professionals of all kinds are incorporating EFT into their practices. The work is already being done but it is my goal to have EFT in the family first aid kit of every household in North America. To this end, I am making the EFT Manual freely available from the EFT website”.

Although most Americans have yet to hear of it, EFT may be the world’s fastest-growing self-help technique. Over 300,000 have downloaded Craig’s free training manual and another 10,000 download it each month. The official EFT Manual has been translated by volunteer practitioners into nine languages.

The EFT Manual explains the basics so that anyone can begin applying EFT right away. It can be freely downloaded at

Citi Cards and FreeCause Raise Funds During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Launch Social Networking Campaign to Benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure® : Campaign to reach the more than 5 Million Pink Ribbon Community Members on Facebook

Citi Cards and FreeCause Raise Funds During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Launch Social Networking Campaign to Benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure® : Campaign to reach the more than 5 Million Pink Ribbon Community Members on Facebook

Citi Cards, the world’s largest provider of credit cards, has teamed with FreeCause, a Boston-based firm that connects leading brands with social networks, to launch a first-of-its-kind campaign on Facebook with the goal of raising $250,000 during October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. A long-time supporter of Komen for the Cure, Citi will donate $50 to the organization for every approved Citi credit card application submitted through the Pink Ribbon community, Facebook’s largest affinity group with over 5 million members.

NEW YORK & CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (PRWEB) October 2, 2008

Funds raised will be directed to one of two innovative Komen for the Cure programs: 1) a scholarship fund to benefit children who have lost a parent to breast cancer, and 2) research targeting aggressive forms of breast cancer, including those that strike younger women. "This is an amazing opportunity to help Susan G. Komen for the Cure achieve two very important goals while at the same time providing real value to members of the Pink Ribbon community," said Liza Landsman, executive vice president, Citi Cards. "This campaign uniquely mobilizes the community around a tangible goal, showcasing how everyone can make a difference by being affiliated with an organization that is actively working to find a cure for a disease that has affected far too many loved ones."

Pink Ribbon members will also be encouraged to share their stories on why they are "passionately pink for the cure" and post them on the Pink Ribbon wall at http://apps. facebook. com/pinkribbon (http://apps. facebook. com/pinkribbon). This site will also will feature campaign updates through mini-news feeds as well as provide a link to CitiCards. com, where they can apply for a credit card.

A Pink Points game will reward other activities, including recruiting new people into the Pink Ribbon community, downloading a Citi/Komen Pink Ribbon toolbar, and completing a Citi credit card application. Points accrue for a drawing at the end of the campaign where winners will receive an iPhone 3G.

"We started Pink Ribbon a year ago as a way for my friends and me to raise money for breast cancer since it had recently affected a family member," says Matt Adkisson, CEO of FreeCause. "Our goal was not to ask anyone to give money, but to raise money by using applications that people normally use in their everyday lives. Our Pink Ribbon toolbar and shopping application raise money just by having members search and shop online. Now members can also raise money by getting a Citi credit card."

Adds Karen Webster, president of Market Platform Dynamics, FreeCause advisor and breast cancer survivor, "FreeCause has organized nearly 5 million people who recognize the importance of finding a cure for a disease that affects our mothers, our daughters, our sisters, our aunts and even ourselves. Their approach to leveraging the everyday habits of the community to raise money for a cause that is near and dear to so many is so powerful, so effective and so important, especially in these difficult economic times."

SurePayroll Main Street Insights: Small Business Owners Wasting Big Money on Hiring Mistakes

SurePayroll Main Street Insights: Small Business Owners Wasting Big Money on Hiring Mistakes

Survey finds that three out of four small business owners have made hiring mistakes, many of which cost upward of $10,000.

Glenview, IL (PRWEB) June 17, 2009

It's every business owner's nightmare. After spending time and money to fill a job opening, the candidate you hired turns out to be a dud - maybe even a danger to fellow employees and customer relations.

According to a recent survey from online payroll provider SurePayroll, this nightmare appears to be transforming into a reality often for many small business owners.

The survey reveals that three out of four surveyed business owners admitted to hiring at least one employee they later wished they never had, and many indicated that the mistake resulted in a significant financial loss - more than $10,000 a pop, according to 12 percent of respondents.
SurePayroll attributes the growing trend of hiring mistakes to difficult economic times that have placed a considerable number of highly competitive and eager job-seekers into the market.

"The businesses we talk to say they are seeing more individuals lying on their résumés or exaggerating their skill sets in order to get scarce jobs. In a down economy, small business owners must be especially vigilant when they bring on new employees," says SurePayroll President Michael Alter.

How Hiring Mistakes are Made:

According to the survey results, many small business owners are overlooking steps to reduce the likelihood of a hiring mistake. Most who admitted to bad hiring decisions said they resulted from a failure to accurately assess an employee's personality, character or skill set. Responses included:

--- "We hired an employee without doing a background check, and then I caught her stealing."
--- "We rely mainly on a strong 'gut feeling' to determine if the candidate seems qualified and references check out."
--- "Our hiring errors have been largely due to time constraints - we needed to fill a position fast and quickly chose what appeared to be the best applicant from resumes received."

So what do business owners do when they realize they've made a hiring mistake? The most common reaction is to give the employee extra training. Others cut right to the chase and fire the unsatisfactory employees. Either tactic produces the same result: more time and money spent in training or recruiting, not generating revenue for the business.

How Business Owners Can Avoid Hiring Mistakes:

According to Alter, the best way to avoid making a bad hire is conducting candidate research during the pre-employment phase. Rather than simply relying on gut feeling, he suggests using these proven, objective screening methods:

--- Perform Background Checks - Nearly half of all small business job applicants submit résumés with false information. A background check will help ensure that the candidates employers hire and entrust with their finances and proprietary information are who they claim to be.

--- Assess Personality Traits - Understanding candidates' underlying personalities and temperaments helps an employer determine whose work style will fit best in the company.

--- Conduct Skills Testing - Skills testing reveals what a candidate is truly capable of before even coming in for an interview. Tests are even available in highly specialized, technical areas including C++, Oracle and Java.

--- Deploy Drug Screening Tests - Experts in toxicology research state that 75 percent of illegal drug users are employed, and most work for small-and medium-sized businesses. Drug screening services help employers keep their workplaces safe and ensure the competency of the employees they trust every day.

"For small business owners, the psychological and economic strain of making a hiring mistake can be a massive burden on the company," says Alter. "What's more, these kinds of hiring mistakes can be reduced or avoided altogether by implementing proper precautionary measures. Investing in pre-employment screening services is worth the small upfront investment."

To assist small business owners with employment screening, SurePayroll recently rolled out a new suite of affordable pre-employment screening product offerings that specifically cater to small business needs. For more information, visit http://www. surepayroll. com/pes.

Blackpool Council Selects Moovera In-Vehicle Wi-Fi for Mobile Classroom

Blackpool Council Selects Moovera In-Vehicle Wi-Fi for Mobile Classroom

UK local authority deploys broadband Internet access on community youth bus for health education, job advice.

Sittingbourne, UK (PRWEB) November 22, 2007

Moovera Networks, a leading developer of fixed and mobile wireless broadband technology, has announced that Blackpool Council have chosen Moovera to provide mobile Internet connectivity for its latest initiative to make vital health services more accessible to the city's young people. The Buzz Bus is a vehicle equipped as a mobile classroom with computer stations, seating area, kitchen and clinic staffed by youth workers and health professionals.

The bus will travel around the town visiting schools, community centers and teenage hangouts, providing advice on a range of topics including sexual health, contraception, substance misuse, alcohol and smoking. The bus is equipped with the Moovbox M Series mobile broadband gateway from Moovera to provide Wi-Fi services that connect to the Internet over a high-speed cellular data network, enabling users of the bus to get online wherever they are in the city.

"It was very important for our mobile classroom to have high-speed Internet access," said Graham Kerr, ICT Manager for the Children & Young People's Department at Blackpool Council. "We considered multiple individual 3G HSDPA (High Speed Download Packet Access) data subscriptions for each workstation and laptop but the recurring costs were high. With the Moovbox mobile broadband gateway, we can share one dedicated 3G HSDPA connection between multiple Wi-Fi devices thus consolidating access and minimizing our costs. At the same time we're able to support Wi-Fi-enabled devices that don't work directly with 3G such as Sony PSP, Nintendo DS and hand-held PDAs."

"Mobile classrooms are a perfect application for our mobile broadband technology," said Jim Baker, CEO and founder of Moovera Networks. "The Moovbox provides a bridge between Wi-Fi devices and carrier networks so that our customers can deliver Wi-Fi Internet wherever there's 3G network coverage. With 3G services particularly prevalent in urban environments, we expect more local authorities to start looking at the combination of Wi-Fi and 3G as an effective way of delivering public services such as those being pioneered by Blackpool."

Blackpool Council has selected Vodafone UK as the mobile data service provider for the deployment, taking advantage of Vodafone's next-generation 3G network that delivers download speeds up to 3.6Mbps.

Funding for the Buzz Bus has been met jointly by Blackpool Primary Care Trust, BSafe Blackpool and the Local Strategic Partnership.

The Moovbox M Series mobile broadband gateway provides a bridge between Wi-Fi access and carrier networks including 3G UMTS/HSPA, WiMAX and TD-CDMA and features built-in GPS. Knees Deep in Dept - Consider Realistic Budgeting

Knees Deep in Dept - Consider Realistic Budgeting

Information for consumers with debt problems to prevent fraudulent, deceptive and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to help spot, stop, and avoid them.

(PRWEB) July 7, 2005

Thousands of people have trouble paying their bills, are getting dunning notices from creditors or have their accounts being turned over to debt collectors.

Many people face a financial crisis some time in their lives. Whether the crisis is caused by personal or family illness, the loss of a job, or overspending, it can seem overwhelming. But often, it can be overcome. Your financial situation doesnÂ’t have to go from bad to worse.

In this situation the following options can be considered: realistic budgeting, credit counseling from a reputable organization, debt consolidation, or bankruptcy. Debt negotiation is yet another option. How does one know which will work best? It depends on the level of debt, the level of discipline, and one's prospects for the future.

This covers the first option, Realistic Budgeting (Self Help).

Self-Help

Developing a Budget: The first step toward taking control of a financial situation is to do a realistic assessment of how much money one takes in and how much money is spend. A good start is to list income from all sources. Then, one should list the “fixed” expenses — those that are the same each month — like mortgage payments or rent, car payments, and insurance premiums. Next, list the expenses that vary — like entertainment, recreation, and clothing. Writing down all expenses, even those that seem insignificant, is a helpful way to track spending patterns, identify necessary expenses, and prioritize the rest. The goal is to make sure one can make ends meet on the basics: housing, food, health care, insurance, and education.

Public libraries and bookstores have information about budgeting and money management techniques. In addition, computer software programs can be useful tools for developing and maintaining a budget, balancing a checkbook, and creating plans to save money and pay down debt.

Contacting Creditors: Contact creditors immediately if having trouble making ends meet. Tell them why itÂ’s difficult for you, and try to work out a modified payment plan that reduces your payments to a more manageable level. One should never wait until accounts have been turned over to a debt collector. At that point, creditors have given up on you.

Dealing with Debt Collectors: The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act is the federal law that dictates how and when a debt collector may contact a person. A debt collector may not call anyone before 8 a. m., after 9 p. m., or while one's at work if the collector knows that an employer doesnÂ’t approve of the calls. Collectors may not harass people, lie, or use unfair practices when they try to collect a debt. And they must honor a written request from an individual to stop further contact.

Managing Auto and Home Loans: Debts can be unsecured or secured. Secured debts usually are tied to an asset, like a car for a car loan, or a house for a mortgage. If one stops making payments, lenders can repossess a car or foreclose on a house. Unsecured debts are not tied to any asset, and include most credit card debt, bills for medical care, signature loans, and debts for other types of services.

Most automobile financing agreements allow a creditor to repossess a car any time one's in default. No notice is required. If a car is repossessed, one may have to pay the balance due on the loan, as well as towing and storage costs, to get it back. If one canÂ’t do this, the creditor may sell the car. If one sees default approaching, one may be better off selling the car personaly and paying off the debt: This avoids the added costs of repossession and a negative entry on a credit report.

If one falls behind on a mortgage, contact the lender immediately to avoid foreclosure. Most lenders are willing to collaborate if they believe one's acting in good faith and the situation is temporary. Some lenders may reduce or suspend payments for a short time. When one resumes regular payments, though, one may have to pay an additional amount toward the past due total. Other lenders may agree to change the terms of the mortgage by extending the repayment period to reduce the monthly debt. Ask whether additional fees would be assessed for these changes, and calculate how much they total in the long term.

If a person and a lender cannot work out a plan, contacting a housing counseling agency could be wise. Some agencies limit their counseling services to homeowners with FHA mortgages, but many offer free help to any homeowner whoÂ’s having trouble making mortgage payments. One can call the local office of the Department of Housing and Urban Development or the housing authority in a state, city, or county for help in finding a legitimate housing counseling agency.

People thinking about getting help to stabilize their financial situation, need to do some homework first. They should find out what services a business provides and what it costs, and donÂ’t rely on verbal promises. Get everything in writing, and read contracts carefully.

A Children's Science-based Fiction Story about the Importance of Healthy Food

A Children's Science-based Fiction Story about the Importance of Healthy Food

"Skippy and Oaf: The Battle Against Oxygen Radicals" (ISBN: 9781933255279), by Craig S. Cousineau, has just been released by DNA Press. Heroic characters portray antioxidants battling evil oxygen radicals in this lively, science-based story. Skippy and Oaf are rats living at a science and nutrition research laboratory. Skippy, a very intelligent rat, is concerned about his friend Oaf's terrible eating habits, and tries to get his friend to eat healthier food. Oaf is skeptical until Skippy explains the science of nutrition at a molecular level, complete with descriptions of battles between superheroes (antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables) and oxygen-radical villains. Based on fascinating scientific information and including a lesson on genomes and DNA, the book is illustrated by playful drawings that clarify its key concepts.

Eagleville, PA (PRWEB) July 16, 2007

The DNA Press team is happy to announce the publication of "Skippy and Oaf: The Battle Against Oxygen Radicals", a book that gives children the tools they need to make the right choices about the food they eat. Craig Cousineau, a student at the University of Michigan, majoring in molecular biology, wrote the book while working as an intern at the Delta-Schoolcraft Intermediate School District.

"Skippy and Oaf" will help children and their parents understand the research behind nutrition and why fruits and vegetables are good for them," says the young author. "Oftentimes when a child is told what they should eat without being told why, they won't eat the right foods willingly or may completely refuse. This book not only explains to children what they should eat, but it also tells them why. It uses information about genetics and microbiology that they might not otherwise start learning about until they are in high school."

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the number of overweight children in the United States has tripled over the past 30 years, with one in five children now being overweight.

"Parents and teachers are looking for books that deal with this topic and can help educate children," says Kristine Paulsen, General Education Director at the Delta-Schoolcraft Intermediate School District. "This book teaches children and their parents about health and nutrition in an entertaining way. Reading "Skippy and Oaf" inspires children to start eating more fruits and vegetables."

Delta-Schoolcraft ISD used "Skippy and Oaf" as the centerpiece in two pilot projects aimed at introducing elementary students to healthy eating and nutrition. 75% of participating students increased the number of healthy foods they were eating, 90% of the students talked about the book at home, and 76% of the parents believe this experience will impact the food choices their children will make in the future.

Following is a sample of the many enthusiastic parent responses:
"Skippy and Oaf made my son more aware of why fruits and vegetables are good for him and opened him to eating things he might avoid." "This book made my daughter aware that veggies are a good snack. It's not just Mom saying it." "My daughter tried new foods and I didn't have to 'make' her."

"Schools in Michigan, California and South Carolina have begun using this book and the feedback from teachers has been great," says Ms. Paulsen.

Joanne Woodard, a teacher in Poway, California, wrote, "My first-grade children loved the book. Every day they wanted to know when we were going to read the 'Skippy and Oaf' book and what the 'Skippy' snack was going to be that day. I can't believe how much the children understood and were fascinated by the information about DNA, oxygen radicals and antioxidants."

"Skippy and Oaf: The Battle Against Oxygen Radicals" can help children and their families improve their nutrition and become excited about the science behind good eating.

Skincare at the Beach: What Seaweed Does for Skin Care

Skincare-news. com enlightens readers about the beneficial ingredients found in seaweed.

Rancho Cordova, CA (PRWEB) August 26, 2007

A day at the beach can bring many delights: sand castles, a sunny glow -- as well as serious skincare. Skincare-News. com's latest article, For the Love of Seaweed, explains how seaweed has been used as a skincare ingredient in many cultures both past and present.
Http://www. skincare-news. com/articles. php? ArtID=418 (http://www. skincare-news. com/articles. php? ArtID=418)

Seaweed, or marine algae, has been prized for its beneficial and restorative properties, particularly in the Far East, for centuries, where it is still considered a delicacy. Although the major use of marine algae is for food, it has also been used with great success in industrial applications, as a fertilizer and more recently -- in cosmetics.

The medicinal uses of seaweed are varied. During Edwardian times, seaweed baths were reputed to heal arthritis and rheumatism. In Asia, traditional medicinal applications of seaweed include treating cancer, in obstetrics and as a phlegmatic.

According to the Skincare News Team's sources, seaweed is rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and carotenoids. With beneficial ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and essential fatty acids, seaweed may prove beneficial in a host of skin conditions, such as tuberculosis, influenza, arthritis and the common cold. Seaweed is antiseptic and detoxifying and, it oxygenates the cells. Some claims have even linked seaweed to treatments for cellulite.

Seaweed use in skincare preparations is growing in popularity, too. It has been used not only for its nutritional value to the skin, but also for its excellent binding properties. Agar and alginates -- botanical thickeners and binders -- are derived from seaweed and play an important role in maintaining the integrity of skincare products such as creams and lotions.

Exercise Essential Before Gastric Bypass, Says Pacific Bariatric Surgical Medical Group

Exercise Essential Before Gastric Bypass, Says Pacific Bariatric Surgical Medical Group

New studies have confirmed that even small to moderate amounts of exercise could help overweight and obese women improve their overall health. This research comes as no surprise to physicians, who have long ascribed to the idea that even minimal activity is better than none at all.

San Diego (PRWEB) July 23, 2007

New studies have confirmed that even small to moderate amounts of exercise could help overweight and obese women improve their overall health. This research comes as no surprise to physicians, who have long ascribed to the idea that even minimal activity is better than none at all.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), regular physical activity significantly reduces the risk of dying from coronary heart disease -- the leading cause of death in the United States -- and decreases the risk for stroke, colon cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Bariatric surgeons at Pacific Bariatric Surgical Medical Group (http://www. pbsmg. com (http://www. pbsmg. com)) understand the positive impact of exercise for overweight or obese individuals, and most bariatric surgery programs require patients to demonstrate an ability to achieve dietary and exercise goals even before performing bariatric or gastric bypass surgery.

"Bariatric surgery is widely regarded as the gold standard for weight loss in obese individuals," said Eugene Rumsey, M. D., F. A.C. S., surgeon at Scripps Mercy Hospital and Pacific Bariatric Surgical Medical Group. "However, it's only one component of the significant weight loss achieved by patients who have had gastric bypass. Patients must also adopt a new lifestyle."

Surgeons at Pacific Bariatric have performed more than 10,000 procedures on adult and adolescent patients at Scripps Mercy Hospital. As a result of the outstanding aftercare programs and support groups, patients at Pacific Bariatric see a success rate of slightly higher than the national average.

Pacific Bariatric Surgical Medical Group, Inc. and Scripps Mercy Hospital are nationally designated by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery as a Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery. Pacific Bariatric Surgical Medical Group, also known as Hillcrest Surgical Medical Group, Inc., has an 80-year tradition of surgical excellence and leadership in San Diego County. For more information, visit http://www. pbsmg. com (http://www. pbsmg. com).

Established in 1890 by the Sisters of Mercy, Scripps Mercy Hospital serves the San Diego and Chula Vista communities. With 700 licensed beds, more than 3,000 employees and 1,300 physicians, Scripps Mercy Hospital is San Diego's longest established and only Catholic hospital. With two campuses, Scripps Mercy Hospital is the largest hospital in San Diego County and one of the 10 largest in California. For more information, visit www. scripps. org.
