Hot Peppers Spark New Weapon Against Black Mold Allergies

Hot Peppers Spark New Weapon Against Black Mold Allergies

With the mayoral election finally over, New Orleans residents are hoping to get their city back on track. One of the biggest concerns is the health hazard caused by the release of dangerous molds growing in the wake of Katrina's receded flood waters. Now there may be a natural alternative that could stamp out the problem of black mold allergies, and the answer is hot peppers.

New Orleans, LA (PRWEB) May 22, 2006

With the mayoral election finally over, New Orleans residents are hoping to get their city back on track. With this year’s hurricane season about to start, many displaced residents are rushing to rebuild their homes and businesses.

One of the biggest concerns in this rush to rebuild is the release of dangerous allergens floating through the air. Most of these allergens consist of dust and spores released by the reconstruction and various molds growing in place of receded flood waters.

Along with the rebuilding comes the clean up, and nearly every flood damaged structure has been invaded by mold growth over the past 7 months. Although local health authorities say the airborne danger is now diminishing, hundreds of residents from the hardest hit areas are complaining of severe continuing health problems.

Known as the “Katrina Cough,” symptoms include asthmatic breathing complications, sinus infections, chronic nasal congestion and headaches. Many residents claim local officials are downplaying the extent of the problem in an attempt not to scare others from returning to the area.

Bonnie Pierson is a life long Louisiana resident who lost everything when Hurricane Katrina hit. Bonnie had suffered from chronic allergies and headaches for most of her life, but after the waters of Katrina receded, Bonnie’s allergy symptoms worsened greatly. Then Bonnie found a product known as “Sinus Buster,” a nasal spray made with a base of hot peppers.

“We had to go to Metairie to do our shopping because everything was pretty much under water along the coast at that time. I went into this drug store and saw Sinus Buster hot pepper nasal spray behind the pharmacist’s counter. I wasn’t sure about it, but the pharmacist recommended it. So I bought some. The first time I used it my sinuses felt relieved right away, and it kept my headaches under control. I think it could really help the people suffering from the mold allergies all over south Louisiana,” says Pierson.

SiCap Industries is the upstate New York company that makes Sinus Buster. SiCap offers a complete line of natural nasal sprays made with hot pepper extract (Capsaicin) sold under the “Sinus Buster” brand. While Sinus Buster has been shown to relieve a variety of chronic sinus and headache conditions, it has also been shown to combat general nasal allergy symptoms. Many displaced residents around New Orleans believe this unique pepper nasal spray may be the answer for Katrina victims suffering from related toxic mold allergies.

“The dust spores released by the molds cause lots of allergy related problems. People who are prone to sinus infections are very affected by the molds. The black mold especially can cause toxic reactions when it’s breathed in which leads to chronic Rhinitis. The active ingredient in hot peppers, Capsaicin has the ability to desensitize the nerve fibers that react to various allergens in the air. The pepper also forces the nerve fibers to release particles trapped inside the nasal cavities,” says Wayne Perry, president of SiCap Industries.

The management at SiCap is now working in cooperation with the Amazing Grace Church of Lafitte, Louisiana to distribute Sinus Buster to displaced residents throughout the greater New Orleans area. Church officials are supplying the complimentary Sinus Buster at various displacement centers throughout their region. According to all concerned parties, the goal is to stamp out the effects of the molds left behind by Katrina’s flooding.

New Metis Planning System Speeds Creation of EA Models

New Metis Planning System Speeds Creation of EA Models

Reusable Enterprise Architecture Approach Supports Gap Analysis, Shortens Startup Time

SEATTLE, WA (PRWEB) October 27, 2004

Computas NA, Inc. today announced an advanced planning system for quickly building Enterprise Architecture (EA) models that enable corporate and government organizations to significantly reduce risk in their decision-making. The new Metis® Planning System (http://www. computas. com/Metis/PlanningSystem), a value-added offering of Computas Professional Consulting Services (PCS), leverages the company’s Metis Enterprise (http://www. computas. com/metis/intro) visual modeling toolset to create comprehensive portfolio management (http://www. computas. com/metis/TheBigPicturePressClip) baseline EA models and definitive ‘next step’ advisories for consultative use between Computas PCS and its customers.

“The Metis Planning System is a tried-and-proven approach to EA model planning refined over the last year with a number of our leading customers,” said William R. Wright, president and CEO of Computas NA. “It is an important capability that provides a standardized, reusable planning system for launching an Enterprise Architecture development effort -- including often-daunting startup tasks such as identifying all data sources, gathering information from business users, and creating data maps that link business questions with EA objects. As a result, our consultants can effectively build a robust first-iteration EA while also making precise, practical recommendations for moving the customer’s EA up to a higher level of maturity.”

Computas PCS chief consultant Michael Carter noted that the Metis® Planning System (http://www. computas. com/Metis/PlanningSystem) is itself a Metis model, one that comprises a model template optimized for EA planning and a standard Metis object repository, along with a complete project plan for implementing an EA. “All of the mechanisms and processes in our new metamodel are geared to speed the creation of an EA that supports business-critical gap analyses for identifying disconnects between top-level corporate strategies and lower-level business unit strategies, and for discovering any misalignment of applications with business processes and goals,” Carter said. “As such, the Metis Planning System strongly promotes the goal of every Enterprise Architecture -- to deliver concrete business value and reduce risk.

Metis Planning System is flexible enough to utilize all EA methodologies and Frameworks

The Metis Planning System comes compete with a plug in EA methodology to allow for faster implementation right from the start. For customers who prefer a specific EA methodology such as TOGAF, Spewak or others, they can easily incorporate that methodology into the planning system as a plug in module.

In addition to being methodology-independent, the Metis Planning System is also designed to utilize many of the industry standard frameworks such as Zachman, TOGAF (The Open Group Architectural Framework), FEAF (Federal Enterprise Architecture Framework), etc. The planning system comes standard with the Metis seven-layer EA Framework which allows for a complete EA implementation from the highest-level business objectives to the lowest level supporting artifacts such as products, vendors and personnel.

The Metis Planning System was designed from the ground up to support not only EA modeling projects, but also additional Metis product implementations such as its CAPBC (Capital Asset Planning and Business Case) solution and its DoD AF (Department of Defense Architecture Framework) template.

Computas PCS fields concrete planning system to ensure the success of customersÂ’ EA initiatives

The Metis Planning System is a core offering, available immediately, of Computas Professional Consulting Services. Computas PCS helps customers quickly implement a mature EA that provides the deep visibility into their enterprise that stakeholders throughout the organization need to make better decisions. Computas PCS flexibly provides the exact complement of expertise -- including Computas engineers, business technologists and consulting partners -- to ensure the success of customersÂ’ EA initiatives. Short-term or long-term engagements are available, depending on the complexity of the customerÂ’s IT and business operations, the self-sufficiency of in-house IT resources, and the customerÂ’s cost-of-ownership and return-on-investment objectives. The scope of engagements include:

• Core Services for EA Planning and Repository Development. All Computas Professional Services engagements begin with a focus on high-level EA assessment and planning, and result in the near-term deliverable of a populated Metis repository for storing and managing the customer’s EA models, both published and in-progress.

• Comprehensive Services for ongoing EA implementation and operations. If a customer’s EA requirements go beyond setting up an EA infrastructure and training modelers and users, Computas PCS can configure the right team embodying all of the conceptual knowledge, managerial experience, and practical know-how needed to optimize and maintain the EA.

• Targeted EA Services for Critical Business Processes. Where an EA initiative is driven by the need to improve decision-making in specific areas of the customer’s business, Computas PCS can work to create an EA that provides major business value in a wide range of business activities. These include: Business Process Management, IT portfolio management, IT operations management (such as change control, product standardization, continuity of operations planning), Capital Asset Planning, visual project management, and compliance with governance requirements and legal guidelines such as the Clinger Cohen Act.

Computas is also designing a training program for third-party partners who have requested to be certified in the Metis Planning System. The training course is slated for roll-out in mid-2005.

Motivational Book Highlighting Effects of Choosing Lust over Love

Motivational Book Highlighting Effects of Choosing Lust over Love

Ever wonder why so many relationships, even those that begin on a healthy note, ultimately end in turmoil? Richard Watkins, author of the new book The Ultimate Alternative: When One Chooses Lust Over Love, has the answer.

Hamilton, NJ (PRWEB) July 9, 2009

Ever wonder why so many relationships, even those that begin on a healthy note, ultimately end in turmoil? Richard Watkins, author of the new book The Ultimate Alternative: When One Chooses Lust Over Love, has the answer.

"A lot of it is because people choose unhealthy, lustful relationships instead of those rooted in the love of Jesus Christ," he says. The Ultimate Alternative: When One Chooses Lust Over Love examines the myriad of reasons why people make such a disastrous choice and end up ruining what could have been a healthy relationship (http://www. lulu. com/content/7147224).

Watkins says that for many of us, the key to making sound relationship choices lies in overcoming the dysfunctional backgrounds many of us were raised in. "Not everyone is set up to succeed from the word 'go,'" says Watkins, "But if we have a growing, thriving personal relationship with Jesus Christ (http://www. lulu. com/content/7147224), He will give us healthier, peaceful, and more stable lives filled with His love that we can share with our mates."

According to Watkins, anyone, regardless of age or gender, will be able to relate to this book. "In all likelihood, you've either been through the experiences depicted in the book, or you know someone who has," he says. In fact, Watkins himself knows firsthand what it means to be in out-of-control relationships. Having bowed gracefully to defeat many times, Watkins has since learned to actively pursue a healthier, God-centered lifestyle, a lesson he teaches all who read The Ultimate Alternative: When One Chooses Lust Over Love.

How to Conquer Mental Maladies: Coping with Anxiety (Part 1 of Maladies Series)

How to Conquer Mental Maladies: Coping with Anxiety (Part 1 of Maladies Series)

A normal reaction to stress is to take action & cope or run away. However, if excessive fear, worry or nervousness creates anxiety, these daily reactions can be can be distorted. How can you tell if your reactions are normal or excessive?

(PRWEB) October 18, 2003

A normal reaction to stress is to take action & cope or run away. However, if excessive fear, worry or nervousness creates anxiety, these daily reactions can be can be distorted. Danger can be perceived in a simple outing to the grocery store, immobilizing a person. How can you tell if your reactions are normal or excessive? Aaron T. Beck, Gary Emery and Ruth L. Greenberg share the following in their book Anxiety Disorders and Phobias: A Cognitive Perspective(New York: Basic Books, 1985):

Anxiety is generally considered a normal reaction if it is roused by a realistic danger and if it dissipates when the danger is no longer present. If the degree of anxiety is greatly disproportionate to the risk and severity of possible danger, and if it continues even though no objective danger exists, then the reaction is considered abnormal.

What causes anxiety? Several factors can cause this; among them, genetic predisposition, negative self-talk, inner conflicts, early childhood learned/social environment, physical/medical symptoms – illness, new medications, etc, coping and social behaviors. To learn more, let’s look at the symptoms and the different forms anxiety can take.

Symptoms

If you have at least 4 of the following physical symptoms more than once in a four-week period, you may be suffering anxiety attacks:

Numbness in the hands & feet

Racing heartbeat or palpitations

Trembling hands

Hot flashes or chills

Choking

Upset stomach

Profuse sweating

Strong fears about dying

Lose control or fear of going crazy

Chest pain

Feelings of unreality or being detached

The fourth edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s “Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder” (also known as the DSM-IV) lists these major types of anxiety disorders with the following symptoms for each:

Panic Disorder – Recurrent, unexpected panic attacks (intense fear or discomfort that suddenly begins as if out of nowhere).

Phobias - An irrational, recurring fear of an object, activity or situation (for example fear of spiders, flying, or leaving your house).

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – An extreme fear or horror resulting from a traumatic experience (for example having flashbacks from past child abuse or war).

Acute Stress Disorder – Similar to Posttraumatic Stress, but this is not as long term in effect (for instance feeling extreme guilt for surviving after a loved one has died).

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder – Persistent thoughts or repetitive behaviors that you feel absolutely MUST be performed (for instance washing your hand 25 times every day).

Generalized Anxiety Disorder – Excessive worry on several events or activities that lasts at least 6 months (like obsessing over what to make for meals and how to keep the house immaculate while working 90 hours per week).

Anxiety Disorder resulting from another condition - Having excessive anxiety because of another type of medical illness ( for example being over anxious because youÂ’re trying to heal from long term depression).

Substance-induced Anxiety Disorder - Directly related to your being exposed to a substance (like having an anxiety reaction to a new medication your doctor prescribed).

More than 19 million people suffer from an anxiety disorder every year. According to the National Institute of Mental Health and other researchers, these disorders are among the most common mental health problems. Physical problems also arise in conjunction with these anxiety illnesses as well; including cardiovascular disease and suicide.

Coping

Several methods are available to treat anxiety disorders. LetÂ’s take a closer look at some.

TFT

One method of coping with anxiety is using Thought Field Therapy (TFT) discovered in 1981 by a cognitive psychologist Dr. Roger Callahan. He discovered that by treating the blockage in the energy flow created by disturbing thought patterns, the disturbance disappears. TFT eliminates negative feelings previously associated with a thought.

How does it work? Dr. Callahan or your own therapist asks you to think about a situation or event and rate how uncomfortable you feel at the moment on a scale from one to ten; ten is the worst you can feel and one is fine.

Then, at the direction of the therapist, you tap with two fingers on various acupressure points on your body. During this process, you share how you feel. The tapping is done according to a prescribed pattern or algorithm, based on the particular emotions being worked on in therapy.

After the series of tapping, usually lasting only five to six minutes, the treatment is complete and the distress is gone. There is an 80% success rate (90-95% with trained therapists) and NO side effects.

Self-Helps

Turn your negative thoughts into positive ones. Try journaling during times of stress, and pinpoint your fears. Then list each fear and delve into the “why’s” and find out what the basis for this fear is. Are you affair to leave your house because your car may break down and strand you? Can you take a bus? Can you walk or ask a friend for traveling help? Then jot down some ways to change your current fearful ideas – slowly. Remember you have to walk before you can run! Maybe concentrate on opening your front door on day 1. Tomorrow put one foot outside. Day 3, maybe both feet can be out. But day 4, perhaps enjoying your progress with an ice cream cone is in order, before trying to make it to the mailbox! Make it an adventure and don’t push yourself. Be your best friend.

And while youÂ’re journaling, add some affirmations to boost your self-esteem and confidence. Write your positives: I am smart. I can do this. I am a good person. Keep goingÂ

How about checking out the library for aids? There are some great books out there with inspirational ways others have coped with their anxiety. Here are a few I like:

· Anxiety, Phobias and Panic Attacks – by Elaine Sheehan, Element Books, Inc. 1996).

· Straight Talk About Anxiety & Depression – by Michael Maloney, M. D. & Rachel Kranz, Facts on File, Inc., 1991.

· Transforming Anxiety Transcending Shame – by Rex Briggs, M. S.W., Health Communications, Inc., 1999.

· When Anxiety Attacks – by Stan H. Looper, M. A. & Cynthia Scott, M. S., Swan Publishers, 1993.

· Uneasy Lives: Understanding Anxiety Disorders – by Carol C. Nadelson, M. D., Chelsea House Publishers, 2000.

Audiocassettes are also tools for coping with anxiety. Check your local library for some like:

The Revitalizer II Relaxation Tape and Priming Self-Esteem - by Thomas H. Budzynski, Ph. D.

Anti-Panic & Stop Panic and Fly More Calmly – by Christopher Gilbert, Ph. D.

Some physicians, psychotherapists and psychologists recommend medication; such as Valium, Xanax, Prozac, Paxil, Klonopin, & Imipramine for their patients suffering anxiety disorders. Sometimes different medications need to be tried and dosages re-adjusted to meet individual needs. However in addition to chemical or emotional dependency on these drugs, there are “side effects.” Anxiety can be replaced by nerve numbness, sluggishness, desire to sleep more, loss of sexual feeling and more. You may have to decide which youÂ’d rather have: anxiety attacks to cope with or side effects to deal with.

Others recommend herbal treatments. Some use Kava Kava, Valerian Root, Gingko and St. John’s Wort in various doses. A good book I recommend for finding out more about herbs is called, “Handbook for Herbal Healing,” by Christopher Hobbs, Interweave Press, Inc, 1990. If you’re already taking medication, check with your physician first before trying any herbs. Some herbs and medicines don’t mix!

Relaxation and physical exercises are also helpful. Practice slowing down your breathing. Take wonderful, deep cleansing breaths, then exhale. Start all over and take it easy. Later make sure you get enough physical exercise as well. Take a walk or work out in the living room with a video or television program. Of course, make sure your doctor okÂ’s this first. And do take care to maintain a healthy menu of foods.

When to Seek Professionals

If thereÂ’s even the slightest thought of suicide, seek help now! If your anxiety has taken over your life for too long and you want help, go get help. ItÂ’s ok to want help and seek it. Trained professionals can often guide us to healthier paths in short term or long term therapy. Perhaps one appointment is all youÂ’ll need to get a new program under way. Maybe 4-6 weeks with a support group would help.

If youÂ’ve been noticing that you canÂ’t seem to cope on your own, get help. Maybe journaling has worked for a few years, but lately itÂ’s lost its power. Make an appointment and ask a professional. New books, tapes, treatments, medications, herbs, and online Websites pop up daily offering a variety of aids for anxiety disorders.

Rideau Grows a Philanthropic Moustache

Rideau takes up the 'Movember' challenge to support men's health.

Montrea, QC and New York, NY (PRWEB) December 15, 2010

Movember (a combination of Mo, slang for moustache and November) challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men's health by growing a moustache.

In Canada alone, over 4,000 men die from prostate cancer each year. This Movember many of the Rideau men donated their faces to raising awareness about prostate cancer. Under the leadership of Michael Girgis, they formed a team called the Recognistaches. As a result of the Recognistaches efforts, Rideau is proud to donate a total of $8,052.00 toward finding a cure for this deadly disease that affects one in six men.

Starting Movember 1st the men were clean-shaven and then grew moustaches for the entire month. During this campaign, the moustache became the ribbon for men's health, the means by which awareness and funds were raised for the number one cancer affecting men—prostate cancer. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember committed to growing a moustache for 30 days.

"Business is hot," says Joey Lograsso, owner of Mamma Mia's Trattoria in Lake Worth, Fla. "I'm selling an additional 150 pizza pies each week. I can only imagine what I will do when the season hits."

When asked what he is doing differently than other restaurant owners who are struggling this time of year, Lograsso states emphatically, "I can only attribute the sudden spike in sales to this new water system I installed."

But this is not just any water system. This water system recreates New York City water but in
A healthier form. "I know it sounds crazy, and I was skeptical, too, when I first heard about it. However, I'm the type who's always striving to be the best. I listened to what this water company had to offer. I challenged them and put their water to the test. By the time I was through testing it in my pizza, soups and drinks, I knew that this company really was onto something special and I had to have it," says Lograsso.

"The crust of my pizza came out crispy and thin, with a great texture and without all the heaviness of the typical Florida pizza. My soups taste better and my coffee and fountain drinks are also more flavorful due to the pure water. So far things are going great! I've received nothing but positive feedback from my customers. It also feels good knowing I'm serving my customers the healthiest glass of water around....I feel good about that."

Famous New York Baking Water Corp., based out of Boynton Beach, Fla., promotes its water as not only the perfect water for getting those distinctive New York baking results in pizza and other baked goods, it also boasts that it brings out the sensitive flavors of the food.

"It is also some of the healthiest and purest water you can drink," says company president Angela Bean. "It's like New York water was over 150-200 years ago, when there were no toxins or impurities to contaminate it."

I'm thrilled Joey's business is doing so well," says Bean, "But I'm not surprised. New York is world renowned for its perfect baking water."

"The quest is to capture that same wonderful, authentic flavor that people so fondly remember tasting back in New York," says Bean. "So, the concept behind Famous New York Baking Water Corp. is that if we can tap into and replicate that 'New York Experience' anywhere in the country, then we will provide something truly exciting to those who crave that 'New York Experience,' whether it's pizza, bread, great soups, desserts, and yes even bagels, our water system is the perfect investment for any restaurant looking to take their business to new heights."

Lograsso feels his strategic investment is really paying off. "I've seen a big difference in the flow of business in the last month as compared to last year at this time," he said. "I feel that putting the water system in my restaurant was the best decision and investment I've made in a long time. I can see first hand everyday the difference the water makes in the food. More importantly, my customers see the difference and taste it, too, and they love it."

Moe and Brenda Sperber, originally from New York, frequent Mamma Mia's regularly, and even celebrated a recent birthday at the restaurant.

"The food is wonderful, we come here all the time," says Brenda Sperber. "We've noticed the food
Is better than ever."

The Sperbers are thrilled that the restaurant has healthy water, and say it fits in perfectly
With their healthy lifestyle.

Tony and Jane Cimaglia of Boynton Beach are frequent visitors of the restaurant.

"They make the best pizza around," said Tony Cimaglia. "We tell everyone we know how
Good the food is."

Bullhorn Staffing and Recruiting Software Enhancements Create Stronger Candidate and Client Relationships

Bullhorn Staffing and Recruiting Software Enhancements Create Stronger Candidate and Client Relationships

Bullhorn empowers staffing and recruiting professionals with greater flexibility and visibility for managing candidates and clients.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) June 26, 2006

Bullhorn, the global leader in On Demand Staffing and Recruiting software, today announced several significant enhancements to the newest release of its easy-to-use, yet flexible and powerful, On Demand staffing and recruiting software. Available now, the enhancements include greater flexibility and visibility into the changing nature of relationships with candidates and clients and a new organizational chart feature. Bullhorn also enables greater user productivity with enhancements spanning email/calendaring, document management and job management. To take a tour or request a live demonstration of Bullhorn, please visit www. bullhorn. com/solutions. cfm (http://www. bullhorn. com/solutions. cfm).

“In the staffing and recruiting business, relationships drive the success of the firm. With these new enhancements to Bullhorn, we continue to provide sales and recruiting professionals with the greatest depth and breadth in managing candidate and client relationships,” said Arthur Papas, CEO and co-founder of Bullhorn. “By focusing these enhancements on the relationship side of the staffing and recruiting business, Bullhorn gives our customers an edge in beating their competition to placements.”

By providing the capability to create a new contact record for an existing candidate, and vice-versa, Bullhorn enables staffing and recruiting professionals, and their entire organization, to more easily stay current with the changing nature of candidate relationships. The benefits of greater visibility into recruiting relationships are further extended, particularly in executive or professional search, when clients become candidates. To ensure manageability, the data in each record remains separate, but the records are linked to provide complete visibility into all candidate information, past and present, allowing recruiters to have a complete picture of a candidate.

New organization charts in Bullhorn provide greater visibility into client relationships. Organization charts may be viewed at the contact or company level, giving sales and recruiting visibility into all levels of a client’s organization. The new organization chart function is particularly useful for sales and recruiting teams that service large, F1000 client organizations where understanding reporting relationships is critical.

Two of the more important productivity enhancements include editing and saving document attachments from within email and the send calendar feature. Send calendar enables recruiting and sales professionals to send a link to their calendar directly to candidates, clients and prospects. As the recipient views and schedules a meeting with the sender in real-time, the sender and all other invitees may view changes to the calendar as they occur, preventing lost time due to mis-scheduling. The sender controls viewing of the calendar.

Bullhorn is the staffing and recruiting industry’s only On Demand, integrated front office solution. Comprising sourcing, email/groupware, applicant tracking, customer relationship management and job management, Bullhorn enables users to communicate and collaborate with contacts, candidates, colleagues and clients in real-time to generate, source and fill job orders, or make placements, at anytime and from anyplace. It is used by more than 400 customers and 6,000 users worldwide, including emerging, medium and large sized staffing and recruiting firms across a wide range of industries. GIS Day 2008 Puts Geospatial Technology Front and Center

GIS Day 2008 Puts Geospatial Technology Front and Center

The Worldwide Event, Sponsored in part by ESRI and the National Geographic Society, Showcases the Importance of GIS, GPS, and other Technologies

Redlands, CA (PRWEB) October 23, 2008

Government officials, business executives, and other professionals will participate this November in GIS Day events around the world, where they will learn the value of using geographic information system (GIS) software in their organizations.

Private businesses, government agencies, and universities will host GIS Day programs the third week of November, inviting guests to attend GIS workshops; tour map galleries; and in some cases get hands-on GIS technology training, analyze geographic data, and make maps themselves.

The official GIS Day 10th anniversary celebration will be November 19, 2008, though some events will be held earlier or later in the month or another time of the year. Visit www. gisday. com to find a list of activities in more than 40 countries.

Many industries, utilities, businesses, government agencies, and conservation organizations use GIS software. The technology lets users capture, store, manage, analyze, and model spatially referenced data and imagery, then publish and share that information in easy-to-visualize maps and charts, sometimes on the Web. Executives, managers, and others use the results of GIS analysis to make more informed decisions. For example, analysts working in law enforcement use the technology to detect crime patterns and use the results of the analyses to develop crime-fighting strategies.

Jack Dangermond, president of ESRI, the world leader in GIS modeling and mapping software and technology, says that GIS Day will give professionals working in fields such as electric and gas, telecommunications, transportation, natural resources, health care, public safety, and government a window into how the geospatial analysis capabilities of GIS software will help them make more informed decisions. "The events help make people aware of the power of this wonderful tool," he says.

As part of the GIS Day celebration, Dangermond will speak at the Rocket City Geospatial Conference, November 18-20, 2008, in Huntsville, Alabama. This year's conference will include a special plenary session that will focus on how geospatial technologies were used for various aspects of planning for and recovering from hurricanes Gustav and Ike, which recently battered the Gulf Coast of the United States.

Other activities planned for students and the general public include GIS demonstrations, geocaching "treasure hunts" using global positioning system (GPS) units, geography bees, and other games designed to heighten interest in geography and geospatial technologies.

GIS Day was launched a decade ago at an inaugural event hosted by the National Geographic Society in Washington, D. C. Students from area schools witnessed a demonstration of what one writer later called an "innovative geography tool for the next century."

The young people saw how GIS software analyzed and mapped data for projects such as studying grizzly bear habitats and finding the best locations for new restaurants. "Maps speak very powerful messages," consumer advocate and environmentalist Ralph Nader said at the event, rallying people to embrace GIS as a technology to improve their communities.

GIS professionals who answered the call will host many of the events. Dan Rose, an environmental GIS technician for the city of Topeka, Kansas, and a member of the Kansas Association of Mappers, plans to give hour-long presentations about GIS mapping to students at schools in Galesburg and Erie, Kansas. He said schools in these smaller communities often do not have large budgets for technology, and GIS Day will introduce the youngsters to concepts such as geospatial visualization and mapping.

"This is why I keep coming back--to bring them some real-world experience, showing them what I do on a daily basis, and maybe, just maybe, a few of the kids will get interested enough to pursue a career in geography or GIS/mapping themselves," Rose said.

Some other GIS Day events include the following:

There will be an open house and software product display for GIS professionals hosted by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources in Canada.

The GIS DAY 2008--Bucharest Green Map project. High school students in Bucharest, Romania, will use GIS and other geospatial technologies to make their city greener and more livable. For example, they will create a tourism map of Bucharest for pedestrians using GIS. They will also analyze the best places for commuters to park in northern Bucharest so they can find convenient public transportation into other parts of the city.

There will be GIS software demonstrations and training, a geography bee, and interactive GIS games for students hosted by Mecklenburg County in Charlotte, North Carolina.

ESRI's Web site, www. gisday. com, offers multiple resources to plan an interesting and educational GIS Day including downloadable posters, flyers, and activity ideas for all different ages.

About GIS Day
GIS Day is principally sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, the United States Geological Survey, the Library of Congress, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, and ESRI.

Prevent Home and Tree Destruction with Ample Pruning this Fall

Prevent Home and Tree Destruction with Ample Pruning this Fall.

ATLANTA (PRWEB) October 14, 2005

Autumn arrived September 22 and stormy weather is bound to return. With it comes an expert’s warning to prune trees methodically to prevent or minimize home and property damage. According to Barry Smith, owner of Arbor-Nomics Tree Service, Atlanta homeowners should survey their property for susceptibilities to heavy rains, tornados, lightening, and ice storms.

Although the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina overshadows the devastation caused by the 1998 tornados here in Atlanta, memories are clear among Dunwoody area residents whose homes and properties were lost during that blustery fall seven years ago.

According to Barry Smith, “Trees that have been properly pruned will survive better than unpruned trees during storms. “

Your trees have had all spring and summer, with sun and an overabundance of rain, to grow. Take a look at them. Have the crowns of the trees gotten much thicker? Are the branches hanging down over your roof or against your house? Did the last few thunderstorms cause any breakage? Well, if so, then it might be time to consider pruning them this fall.

Here are some considerations and tips on tree pruning in Atlanta:

Overall, trees should be pruned every two years. Pruning, in general, makes your trees healthier by getting rid of damaged or dead branches, increasing the air flow in the tree which decreases the number of insects and eliminating interior cross and rubbing branches so the energy goes to the exterior of the tree.

Pine trees should be pruned in the cooler weather. Pruning cuts are actually injuries to a tree and, in the case of pines, there is less pine beetle activity in cooler weather, which is healthier for the tree.

Bradford Pears are abundant in Atlanta and create problems for homeowners year round. They must be thinned out to get some of the weight out of the tree, which will prevent splitting.

Pruned trees give your landscape and property a cleaner and neater look. Cutting lower limbs and/or thinning the interior of a tree allow sunlight to penetrate through its branches and helps grass under the tree grow.

Call a reputable company with a certified arborist or a degreed forester. And make sure they have insurance. You can go to www. treecareindustry. org and find a certified arborist near you.

The benefits of true pruning are many, but the most important benefit is to decrease the risk of potential home or property damage.

About Arbor-Nomics Tree

Arbor-Nomics Tree has been caring for trees in Atlanta for over decade and they've been given a "Best Pick" award for Tree Care in Atlanta by Home Reports™ seven years in a row.

About Barry Smith

Barry Smith is the owner of Arbor-Nomics Tree, a local Atlanta tree care company. He holds a Forestry degree from the University of Kentucky.

Barry’s tree care experience spans 21 years and he worked for several tree care companies in Lexington and Atlanta before becoming the owner of Arbor-Nomics Tree in Atlanta. He believes in tree preservation versus removal and respects the environment.

“I believe that trees help to maintain equilibrium in our environment and

are very important to our survival.”

The presentation, entitled Many Ways of Knowing: An Introduction to Multiple Intelligences, was given to Directors and CEO’s of Southwestern Science Centers and Native Museums as part of a National Science Foundation grant to foster a conference entitled, "Cosmic Serpent - Bridging Native and Western Learning in Museum Settings”. The conference was co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the University of California, Berkeley Science and Space Laboratory, and the Indigenous Education Institute.

Dr. Morgan’s presentation on Multiple Intelligences highlighted the salient features of Multiple Intelligences Theory as developed by Dr. Howard Gardner who is currently the Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education at Harvard University Graduate School of Education, co-Director of Project Zero at Harvard University, and adjunct Professor of Neurology at the Boston University School of Medicine. Her presentation covered both theoretical and practical applications for integrating Multiple Intelligences Theory into the development, structure, and delivery of museum and science exhibits.

Dr. Morgan also demonstrated how ancient wisdom and many ways of indigenous knowledge are enhanced and augmented throughout Multiple Intelligences Theory, and she gave several multicultural illustrations for each of the nine Multiple Intelligences. Conference attendees were given tools, learning packets and large and small group opportunities to brainstorm and develop ideas for museum and science center exhibits using Multiple Intelligences Theory.

Dr. Morgan, who has served as President of HCCUA since 2008, is renowned for her expertise and research in the areas of multicultural counseling, medical education, and educational research. She is a frequent headline speaker at conferences focused on behavioral science, educational leadership, and innovative teaching practices, and is a passionate advocate of education and health initiatives supporting indigenous populations.

Links Medical Products Inc., an industry leader in healthcare products for hospitals and nursing homes, announces the opening of its new headquarters in the Irvine Spectrum. The new facility is located at 9247 Research Drive, Irvine, California 92618. In addition, Links Medical maintains another facility in the Irvine Spectrum plus an assembly and distribution operation in Indio, California. This most recent expansion reflects Links Medical's rapid growth and the need for additional space to meet anticipated heavy demand for their new ManukaMed™ Medical-Grade Manuka Honey products. Manuka Honey comes from the flower of the Manuka tree (leptospermum scoparium) native to New Zealand and has shown in numerous studies to have powerful bacteriostatic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Named in 2003 by Inc. magazine as one of the 500 fastest growing small businesses in America, privately held Links Medical has continued its growth trend by increasing sales over 300% since the Inc. award.

According to the company, this rapid growth has enabled them to make a commitment to capturing a significant share of the rapidly expanding worldwide market for Manuka-Honey-based products through the introduction of their ManukaMed brand of products.

“The new state-of-the-art facility in Irvine and our Indio operation make it possible for us to greatly expand production and distribution operations to support our ManukaMed marketing efforts and to keep up with the continued growth of our existing product lines. We believe the new Medical-Grade Manuka-Honey-based wound care products will be widely accepted and help us continue our substantial growth," said Tom Buckley, CEO of Links Medical.

In addition to the ManukaMed wound care products, the company plans to launch a line of over-the-counter ManukaMed brand natural health and beauty products.

The Medical-Grade Manuka Honey supplied by Links Medical will carry the Gold Seal of the Molan Gold Standard established in 2009 by the University of Waikato in New Zealand in conjunction with the University's Professor Peter Molan, MBE, who discovered the original Manuka activity. As a highly respected honey researcher and pioneer in the study of Manuka Honey, Professor Molan has put his name to the Molan Gold Standard to give customers confidence that they are buying authenticated honey with medical and health properties.

Recent research by the University of Sydney confirms Professor Molan's own work that shows that harmful bacteria are not able to develop resistance against the bacteriostatic activity of Manuka Honey. According to the University of Waikato, the Molan Gold Standard certification establishes an international standard for the authentication of medicinal honeys.

The Molan Gold Standard certification will also help customers sort through the often confusing information relating to the true strength of various Manuka Honey products currently available on the market, small amounts of which have been know to sell for as much as $65 or more. According to Professor Molan, not all Manuka Honeys have true medicinal bioactivity beyond the range that's normal for all honeys and that several Manuka Honeys labeled "active" have little or none of the non-peroxide activity that is the key to its distinctive bacteriostatic qualities.

Founded in 1995 by Tom and Pat Buckley, Irvine-based Links Medical Products, Inc. has developed a number of products widely used in hospitals and nursing homes. They include the Silent Knight™ Tablet Crushing System, Microdot® Blood Glucose Monitoring System and Hydra-Aid™ Beverage Thickener for swallowing problems.

Open Enrollment Season Brings HSA Opportunities for Financial Institutions

Open Enrollment Season Brings HSA Opportunities for Financial Institutions

With the 2008 open enrollment season kicking off, interest in high deductible health plans will continue to grow. For bankers, offering an HSA program is the fastest way to grow new deposits and their customer base

Lake Geneva, WI (PRWEB) November 7, 2007

Thousands of companies nationwide will be offering health insurance plans that qualify for Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) to their employees this fall. Many of these employers are funding all or part of their employees' HSAs. For banks and credit unions, this provides a great new opportunity to offer an HSA program to their business clients.

"Financial institutions that wish to offer HSAs in 2008 must get set up to offer HSAs now," said Roy Ramthun, Senior Vice President for HSA Clearing. "They need to start marketing now, informing their business clients that the HSA can be set up and held locally at their bank or credit union. Banks and credit unions may not need to open an account until 2008, but they must begin contacting their customers to let them know they will be able to accept the accounts once these group HSAs are set up elsewhere, it is difficult to get the employer to change, so it is vital that financial institutions begin educating their customers now during the open enrollment period if they are to capture these accounts. Each HSA is different, as no two people spend or save the same on their health care needs, but from the financial institution's point of view it's almost like opening another savings or checking account. It couldn't be any easier."

"Our current financial institutions are reporting capturing new HSA business from their existing business accounts, school districts, municipalities, individuals and receiving HSA rollovers from existing clients that have found they can now set up their HSA locally," said Tim Morales, President of HSA Clearing Crop. "HSA deposit growth has taken off since the of passage of the HSA provision in the Tax Relief and Health Care Act of 2006. The new law allows people to fully fund their HSA contribution, for the full year, even if they purchase their high deductible health plan midyear, rather than prorate as in previous years. With the 2008 open enrollment season kicking off, interest in high deductible health plans will continue to grow. For bankers, offering an HSA program is the fastest way to grow new deposits and their customer base."

About HSA Clearing Corp
HSA Clearing's turn - key HSA set up program for banks and credit unions can have them offering HSAs in a matter of days. The HSA monies can now be deposited locally to better benefit the community and their customers. Financial institutions that take advantage of their HSA set up program receive HSA website, online HSA application, HSA forms, Section 125 plans for employer payroll deductions, and the exclusive HSA Rx Card program with real time pricing, which can also be included for all the financial institution's customers. Washington, DC Plastic Surgeon Mark E. Richards, M. D. Says Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy has Staggering Health Benefits that Could Change the Way We Age

Washington, DC Plastic Surgeon Mark E. Richards, M. D. Says Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy has Staggering Health Benefits that Could Change the Way We Age

Dr. Mark E. Richards with Ageless Impressions Plastic Surgery Institute is a nationally recognized plastic surgeon, and has been certified in both general surgery and plastic surgery. Every day at his plastic surgery in Washington, DC, he sees people who want to improve their appearance in some way to hopefully, look and feel better than ever about themselves. Aesthetics and appearances are part of his daily professional life – and now he wants to provide patients with the other half of what they are missing. “Cosmetic surgery can improve the way we look… bio-identical hormone therapy can improve our physical quality of life and feelings of youth.”

Rockville, MD (Vocus) July 21, 2009

While bio-identical hormones have been known and available since the 1930’s, medical treatment with time release pellets has only been available in the United States since approximately 1990. Dr. Mark E. Richards, a Washington, DC plastic surgeon, is on a mission to educate his medical brethren and the general public about the magnitude of age-related ailments that can be reduced with time-release pellet bio-identical hormone therapy. As a plastic surgeon in the forefront of his profession, Richards is looking to improve a person’s quality of life in addition to their outside appearance.

Dr. Richards wants to help people overcome traditional physical and psychological ailments that occur with age, and believes the answer lies in bio-identical hormone therapy. As people get older, they are prone to: decreased bone density and muscle mass; increased body fat, blood sugars, and cholesterol; lack of energy; decreased libido; type-2 diabetes; and many other ailments. Many also begin to suffer from anxiety, symptoms of depression, and sleep disturbances. Dr. Mark Richards' research into these topics led him to discover that a large part of these common afflictions that occur as we get older are likely due to a decrease in the levels of our natural hormones – particularly testosterone and/or estradiol. “There’s been a search for anti-aging treatments for millennia. The answer lies within us. Many maladies are clearly linked to depletions in our hormone levels. Supplemental hormones can restore energy, health, and reduce the risks of developing some of these debilitating conditions.”

In fact, Dr. Richards says, increasing hormone levels could possibly eliminate 70-to-80% of osteoporosis, which leads to hip replacement, back pain, and other conditions. While decreasing hormone levels are often thought of as a “female” problem responsible for sleep disturbances, hot flashes, and fatigue, Dr. Richards states that osteoporosis rates are climbing in men along with complaints of lack of energy, depression, and erectile dysfunction. All these problems may significantly improve with increased hormone levels. Many conditions can be alleviated in people who start to exhibit symptoms and signs of the aging process once they hit their 40’s or 50’s, and sometimes even earlier. Dr. Richards says bio-identical hormones help in diminishing a host of problems, not only physical and psychological, but even financial. “As a result of preventing age-related health conditions, you could conceivably cause a dramatic cut in the cost of Medicare, and at the same time increase the percentage of seniors who are productive and contributing to our economy instead of draining away health care dollars for preventable diseases.”

Bio-identical hormones are hormones of the exact same chemical structures as those found in the human body. They are traditionally derived from an ingredient found in soy beans and yams. Dr. Richards says non-bio-identical hormones – those that have a different molecular structure than hormones produced by humans - are responsible for the known health risks and side effects when “hormones” are used in humans. Bio-identical hormones are just that: identical. “There has never been a single study showing bio-identical hormones are harmful when used in reasonable dosages.”

The treatments are administered to patients several times a year by inserting tiny, time-release pellets into the fat under the skin. Over a period of months, a steady stream of hormones is released into the bloodstream. Dr. Richards says this ultimately leads to the re-establishment of hormones’ protective benefits after our original levels have decreased, and can reduce the occurrence of the common diseases of aging, leading to a better long-term quality of life.

Even though Europe has been leading the way on this type of therapy for years, why isn’t bio-identical hormone therapy more popular in the U. S.? Dr. Richards says there are three main reasons: “Lack of appropriate physician education about bio-identical hormones (currently, hormone education is often funded by pharmaceutical companies with competing non-identical products); the prohibition on patenting human hormone molecules which explains the lack of widespread commercialization and distribution; and the inexplicable lack of attention being given to well done scientific studies suggesting the enormous health benefits of this cost effective therapy.”

Dr. Richards says he’s seen patients start to feel better after only a few weeks with the hormone pellets. The response so far has been enormously positive. “Both male and female patients have just been ecstatic. They tell me their moods and energy levels have been dramatically increased and that they feel refreshed when they wake up. Cholesterol and blood sugar levels have dropped. Women, particularly those near or after menopause, have called up giggling, saying they feel great.”

Dr. Richards says treatment with bio-identical hormone therapy needs much more serious attention, as the potential benefits both for individuals and society are too big to ignore. In addition to the relief of the above mentioned symptoms, he says there is credible evidence that these hormone supplements are prophylactic in the prevention of such illnesses as breast cancer and heart disease. “I feel that it’s a huge error that we’re not routinely testing hormone levels in people as soon as they display symptoms attributed to “aging”. Many costly and debilitating conditions can be prevented with bio-identical hormone therapy. We need to establish national prospective studies on this treatment, perhaps in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health’s Division on Aging.”

For more information on bio-identical hormone therapy in Washington DC, Dr. Mark Richards can be reached at Ageless Impressions - Plastic Surgery Institute, 11300 Rockville Pike, Suite 912, N. Bethesda, Maryland 20852 – (301) 468-3669; or via his website at http://www. plastic-surgeon. us.

International Aura Awareness Day - November 27, 2004

International Aura Awareness Day - November 27, 2004

Cynthia Sue Larson, author of "Aura Advantage: How the Colors in Your Aura Can Help You Attain What You Desire and Attract Success," announced today that November 27, 2004 will mark the third annual International Aura Awareness Day. Held on the fourth Saturday of November, it is the only "aura" day on the calendar. Some ways to celebrate this special day are by reading about auras, talking about auras, and practicing visualizing and feeling auras.

Berkley, CA (PRWEB) November 21, 2004

It's been said that true beauty comes from within, but until recently there's been no official day for honoring and acknowledging that special inner light we each have. Our shining body of light, also known as the aura, has been recognized and artistically portrayed for millennia. The aura surrounds each and every one of us and changes according to our health, mood, and character.

Auras are not just bright, colorful, and fun -- they are also our assurance of good physical, emotional, and psychological health. Medical intuitives can discern illnesses before they appear by viewing energy fields, and increasing numbers of people with life-threatening ailments are finding relief and healing through meditation and visualization. Recent medical studies have shown that distant healing that relies upon energetic rather than physical connections between people plays a significant role in people's health, even when they have life-threatening diseases like AIDS and heart disease.

Says Larson, "People often say things like, 'I'm feeling blue,' 'he's green with envy' or 'she's in the pink of health' from an intuitive awareness that our feelings rise and fall in colorful ways. Increasing public awareness about auras is a vital step towards improving global health, well-being, and peace. There is a great need at this time for building a sense of international community, and Aura Awareness Day is an excellent way to remind us that at our core, we are all energy beings."

Applying The Theory of Spiritual Care for Nursing Practice

Applying The Theory of Spiritual Care for Nursing Practice

New book provides the guidelines for nurses to assess and administer appropriate spiritual care

Antioch, CA (Vocus) September 6, 2010

Author Bonnie Weaver Battey, Ph. D., R. N. presents a unique approach to nursing practice with holistic care. In relation to this, she shares the Theory of Spiritual Care for Nursing Practice, her book published through Xlibris.

The author addresses the issue of establishing the nursing practice of holistic care in hospitals and similar health care agencies as well as in educational programs. Theory of Spiritual Care for Nursing Practice provides guidance and structure to this effort. Incorporating spirituality into one’s own nursing practice or for the entire nursing staff at an agency is a most pressing and intangible task facing nursing today.
