Lohan, who 20 years old and not yet of legal drinking age, is famous for her excessive partying. ABC News reports that her representative, Lesley Sloan-Zelnik, has confirmed that Lohan has checked into a rehabilitation program following months of speculation about her overuse of alcohol.

Dr. Kini adds, "It doesn't take 20 or 30 years of alcohol abuse to cause liver damage or cirrhosis of the liver. If you drink too much and too often, it might only take a few years before long term liver damage begins to appear. So it can certainly happen to people in their 20's. This new discovery increases the understanding of the genetic basis of atrioventricular (AV) conduction disease and offers the promise of improved diagnosis and screening, as well as new strategies for treatment.

The discovery "helps explain some of the mysteries of AV conduction disease in children, such as why problems sometimes don't show up until the child is much older," says D. Woodrow Benson, MD, PhD (http://www. cincinnatichildrens. org/svc/staff/b/woodrow-benson. htm (http://www. cincinnatichildrens. org/svc/staff/b/woodrow-benson. htm)), a cardiologist (http://www. cincinnatichildrens. org/svc/prog/heart/clinical/cardiology. htm (http://www. cincinnatichildrens. org/svc/prog/heart/clinical/cardiology. htm)) at Cincinnati Children's who led the study. Dr. Benson will present the study Monday, April 19 at Experimental Biology 2004, as part of the scientific sessions of the American Association of Anatomists in Washington, DC.

For some children, AV conduction disease is associated with such congenital heart problems as cardiac malformation or cardiomyopathy (http://www. cincinnatichildrens. org/health/heart-encyclopedia/disease/cardiomyopathy. htm (http://www. cincinnatichildrens. org/health/heart-encyclopedia/disease/cardiomyopathy. htm)), or with certain neuromuscular diseases. In some children, the cause of AV conduction disease is unknown.

Several studies at Cincinnati Children's and elsewhere have identified AV conduction disease in familial clusters over multiple generations, suggesting a genetic cause in these children with no other associated disease. Wanting to determine the specific genes involved, Dr. Benson's lab enlisted the help of nearly 50 patients at Cincinnati Children's, from newborns to 20-year-olds, and the DNA of their family members.

Dr. Benson and his colleagues compared the sequence of genes in these families to the normal sequence of genes in the human genome. They found differences in genes with three different functions in the heart: excitability, energy and transcription (the regulation of other genes). Armed with this knowledge, the researchers are able to trace the fingerprints of the three genes on physical history and particular features in electrocardiograms.

They now are looking for new ways to use this information to know which children are at risk for a condition that has plagued other family members, when the disease is likely to cause problems, and what types and how severe such problems may be. Differences in which gene is causing the problems also are likely to suggest differences in treatment, says Dr. Benson.

Dr. Benson also examined mouse models of AV conduction disease and discovered that some of the missing genes were also abnormal in the Cincinnati Children's patients.

Currently the youngest children with AV conduction disease usually receive the same treatment as do the oldest adults with electrophysiological problems: a pacemaker, which, like car batteries, needs to be replaced at regular intervals. Most older adults receive pacemakers after their heart tissue has been injured by heart attack or disease. But for the small percentage of pacemaker wearers in the United States under the age of 20, only a very few have experienced such injury.

Although AV conduction disease is relatively rare, Dr. Benson hopes his research will have implications for other diseases of the heart that show up later in life but have origins in childhood.

The Kidney Cancer Association (KCA) today announced a $5-thousand grant to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in support of a summer meeting for cancer advocates in Bethesda, Md.

Listening and Learning Together: Building a Bridge of Trust, a summit hosted for the cancer advocacy community by the National Cancer Institute Director's Consumer Liaison Group (DCLG), will be held June 19 - 20 in the Natcher Conference Center on the NIH campus.

"This meeting affords cancer advocates an excellent opportunity to learn from experts about the latest NCI scientific programs," said KCA president Bill Bro, a member of the DCLG. "We believe there will be an excellent turnout for this first-of-its-kind event. The KCA is pleased to provide financial assistance to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health in support of this valuable meeting," Bro added.

Participants will be able to tour the NIH campus, brainstorm in breakout sessions, and hear the latest research on survivorship. Summit registration closes May 31, 2006 and scholarship applications will be accepted through the end of this month.

The KCA was founded in 1990 by Dr. Eugene P. Schonfeld and a small group of kidney cancer patients. It has grown to serve people in more than 100 nations. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 38-thousand Americans will be affected by kidney cancer this year. There is no cure for the disease. The KCA's mission is the eradication of death and suffering from kidney cancer.

Bogus drugs are making their way into local pharmacies increasing the demand for better watchdog policies.

While Americans are continually warned against buying medicine over the Internet to protect themselves from fake drugs, it is becoming painfully obvious that buying from one's pharmacist may pose a greater threat.

An episode of NBC's Dateline called “Bitter Pills” profiled cases of consumers who heeded government advice to buy drugs from their main street pharmacy, only to find themselves still ingesting pretend meds.

“The fact remains that the U. S. has the second highest number of counterfeit drug cases, after Columbia,” says Dr. Paul Zickler of DoctorSolve Pharmacy Services (www. doctorsolve. com).

The book Dangerous Doses by Katherine Eban states that from 2000 to 2004, the FDA's criminal cases that involved counterfeiting increased almost tenfold, from six a year to 58. By the end of October 2004, 91 cases were open. The FDA conservatively estimates that about 35 million prescriptions annually are filled with something other than the prescribed drug.

“One of the problems is the unregulated supply chain,” states Zickler. “There is a large network of wholesalers who buy and sell drugs, and laws governing them are very loose. In some cases, one can set up shop with a nominal fee and a promise to adhere to storage rules.”

Recently, the FDA announced new rules that require medicines to be tracked every time they change hands from the manufacturer all the way to the pharmacy. Known as the “pedigree,” the strict licensing process will involve background checks and a trackable paper trail. The new, long overdue rules go into effect December, 2006.
