Alcohol Awareness Month - A Time to Learn More About the Disease of Alcoholism

Alcohol Awareness Month - A Time to Learn More About the Disease of Alcoholism

It is a common misconception that alcoholism is a sign of weak will. In fact, alcohol abuse is recognized as a chronic disease that, like other chronic illnesses, can follow a progressive downhill course without appropriate treatment. Mount Kisco, NY (PRWEB) March 19, 2009

It is a common misconception that alcoholism is a sign of weak will. In fact, alcohol abuse is recognized as a chronic disease that, like other chronic illnesses, can follow a progressive downhill course without appropriate treatment.

Lexington Center for Recovery (LCR), one of the largest providers of alcoholism and substance abuse treatment in New York's Hudson Valley, encourages people to learn more about the dangers of alcohol use and abuse and to seek help when needed - during Alcohol Awareness Month this April - and year-round.

According to the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS), there are an estimated 80,800 adults aged 18 and over (about 7% of the population) with an alcohol dependency problem in New York's Dutchess, Rockland and Westchester counties. (Source: NY State OASAS; Rockland, Dutchess and Westchester County Service Need Profiles, September 2008)

How can a person tell when social drinking has developed into alcohol abuse? Signs of problem drinking include drinking to improve mood or to cope with stress; lying about drinking habits; feeling guilty about alcohol use; needing to consume greater amounts for the same effect; and medical, social, or financial complications arising from chronic alcohol use.

As the disease of alcohol abuse progresses, it can cause mental and physical damage, as well as early death. The immediate effects of alcohol on the body, like dehydration, task impairment, loss of coordination and loosening of inhibitions, wear off over time. The long-term effects like ulcers, inflammation of the stomach, cancers, liver cirrhosis, brain damage, hypertension, and nerve disorders become worse with chronic drinking and contribute to multiple serious health problems associated with alcoholism.

"As with other chronic illnesses, alcohol abuse is treatable, and people who abuse alcohol can recover," said Adrienne Marcus, Ph. D., executive director and founder of LCR. "Alcohol Awareness Month is an ideal time to take the proactive steps needed to break the alcohol cycle and treat the underlying illness."

LCR's administrative headquarters is located at 116 Radio Circle, Mt. Kisco, NY. Westchester County clinics and programs are located in Mount Kisco, NY; New Rochelle, NY; Yonkers, NY; White Plains, NY; and Peekskill, NY. The agency's Dutchess County clinics are located in Poughkeepsie and Beacon, NY. Rockland County treatment facilities are located in Airmont Haverstraw. For additional information, call 914.666.0191 x1006 or visit www. lexingtonctr. org.

About LCR: Lexington Center for Recovery is one of the largest providers of alcoholism and substance abuse treatment in the Hudson Valley. It has treated approximately 40,000 people in its 26-year history and has 18 distinct programs throughout Westchester, Dutchess and Rockland counties. A vital community resource, LCR eliminates barriers to entry and success in an alcohol and substance abuse recovery program by providing support services to clients and their families. Its innovative programs are affordable and aimed at different needs and ages. LCR is licensed by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.

Financial Planner Offers Tips for Securing Your Financial Future

Financial Planner Offers Tips for Securing Your Financial Future

As the Social Security debate rages on, here are ten essential things you must do to ensure your financial well-being.

Montclair, NJ (PRWEB) April 7, 2005

Social Security is an extremely popular government program. Many people credit it with allowing retired Americans to live in relative comfort and dignity; however, it was never intended to provide for all of someoneÂ’s living expenses. And originally it was not expected to pay so much for so many years.

Roger Streit, president of Key Financial Solutions, reminds us that there are fewer people working for each person retired. "In 1950 it was 16.5 to 1. Now it is 3.3 to 1 and in the future there will only be 2 people working for every person retired," says Streit. Why does this matter? "Because we have a pay-as-you-go system. Taxes collected now pay for retirement benefits being paid out now. We do not have a prepaid system (such as the familiar 401(k) individual accounts)."

Whether or not you believe that there is a Social Security funding "crisis" and whether or not you look forward to investing in Private Accounts, you as an investor and saver can learn much from the debate. Consider the arguments, pro and con, and pay attention to the issues and the assumptions.

A professional financial planner, Streit works with middle-income families and professionals from all walks of life on an hourly, as-needed basis. Here are the ten essential things you must do, according to Streit, to create a more secure financial future:

#1: Save more. The United States ranks last among industrial nations in our savings rate. The federal government is running a large deficit and, like their Uncle Sam, individual Americans prefer to consume now, rather than save now and spend later. In addition, most employers do not offer defined benefit pensions any more. The truth is we need to save more as a nation. And you have to save for your retirement. Someone else is not going to provide for your future.

#2: Live within your means, create a budget and stick to it. When analyzing the solvency of the Social Security system, actuaries and economists assume certain growth rates in the economy and in benefits. A small difference in assumptions can make a great difference in the conclusions. For example, if the economy grows by 3% rather than 1.5%, there is a tremendous difference in whether there will be enough money to pay the bills. The reason for this is the power of compounding over decades. Use this knowledge to make your own projections and to alter your spending and saving choices. If you need assistance with such things as goal setting and investment choices, seek professional help from an independent fee-only financial advisor.

#3: Plan ahead so that your money lasts as long as you do. Since 1940, life expectancy for those attaining age 65 has slowly and steadily increased. The number of Americans Age 65 or older has increased from 9 million in 1940 to almost 35 million in 2000. The sheer size of the "Baby Boom" generation will cause those numbers to balloon. You may live into your 90Â’s, which is why many financial planners use age 95 in a retirement needs analysis.

#4: To avoid a pinch in your lifestyle, start early. Because we are talking about a system that will be in effect far into the future, the sooner we tackle the Social Security problem the better. The same holds true for individual savers. If you are in your 30Â’s and want to plan for a comfortable retirement, you may need to save only 10% of your yearly earnings. If you wait until you are 45, you may have to save 20% of your salary. Waiting until youÂ’re in your 50Â’s may mean that youÂ’ll need to save half of all you earn.

#5: Create a long-term investment plan and stick to it. The discussion of Social SecurityÂ’s health in 75 years reminds us that we need to focus on long-term goals and results. Studies show that individual investors suffer when they react to short-term fads and chase last yearÂ’s market performance. On the other hand, history proves that planning and patience pay off. Do your homework, make prudent assumptions and stay the course.

#6: Learn about stocks, bonds, mutual funds, diversification, risk and return. The investments you choose now are important. Learn the advantages and disadvantages of the funds that are available to you in your employerÂ’s 401(k) or 403(b) plans. Create an overall plan that takes into account retirement and other savings. Should Private Accounts come into being, individuals will have to become much more knowledgeable about investing. Why wait? Improve your financial IQ a little everyday. Visit www. KeyFeeOnly. com for useful articles and a recommended reading list.

#7: Take a few calculated risks. The current Social Security fund is "invested" in Treasury Securities (it’s really a system where one part of the government lends money to another part). Treasury Securities are of the highest quality but, over the long term, provide low returns (this is what Private Accounts are meant to remedy). As you study the issue, you will probably decide that the biggest risk is not taking any risk. Many financial planners believe that how you allocate your investments (stocks versus bonds, for example) greatly determines your overall results. Remember that risk and return are linked – the higher the risk, the higher the potential return. Unless you’re already rich, you will not achieve your long-term goals by playing it safe (for instance, only investing in bank CDs).

#8: Control investing costs. Some people are skeptical of the proposed Social Security Private Accounts because they fear that management and accounting fees will be too high. Realizing that over decades even a 1% change can make a great difference brings home how important it is to control costs in your existing investments. Costs matter and they can be controlled. When comparing mutual funds, pay attention to sales commissions, hidden transaction costs, high turnover, and operating expenses to arrive at expected rates of return. A fee-only financial planner can give you independent, objective advice. Many favor index funds which provide broad diversification and low annual costs.

#9: Max out those retirement plans. However the Social Security issues are resolved, remember that even now Social Security benefits do not amount to enough to live comfortably. Originally it was put in place to save the old folks from living in poverty. Most people do aspire to do much better than that. Put the maximum amount in employer-sponsored retirement plans such as 401(k)s and 403(b)s to capture employer matches. Then build up assets in Individual Retirement Accounts, whether traditional or Roth. If you can still afford to invest more, max out those employer-sponsored plans. Finally, if at all possible, build up savings in after-tax accounts.

#10: DonÂ’t neglect your health. Medicare is actually a larger funding problem than Social Security. The new drug benefit will cost trillions to fund. Your personal health will greatly influence the quality of your retirement. Remember that the choices you make today will influence your health in old age. Like investing, health matters are worth studying. Most experts recommend simple things like getting more exercise, avoiding smoking and consuming less alcohol. Some emphasize smart food choices such as avoiding sugar and refined carbohydrates. Others recommend eating organic produce and avoiding pesticides. Most doctors recommend taking a good multivitamin, and some go way beyond that in terms of supplements. Take charge of your health and learn about what is right for you.

"No matter what happens in the current Social Security debate, remember that Social Security alone is not likely to allow you to maintain your present lifestyle once you retire," says Streit. "Even if Personal Accounts are enacted, the ability to put money aside will be phased in and will be rather limited at first. In addition, anyone investing in Personal Accounts will have reduced traditional Social Security benefits."

Depression, High Blood Pressure, Fatigue? Take a Breath!

Depression, High Blood Pressure, Fatigue? Take a Breath!

Sleep Group Solutions partner with Wisconsin Dentist to overcome dangerous side effects associated with OSA

Milwaukee, Wi (Vocus/PRWEB) January 10, 2011

We’re hearing and learning more about it. The rise of OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) in communities is at a staggering high. It’s estimated nearly 100 million people have OSA, a disorder which causes the breath to cease during sleep, some experiencing up to a minute without breath. What’s more dangerous than actually having the disorder? The side effects associated with OSA span from depression, high blood pressure, fatigue, higher risk of heart attack and stroke, memory loss, as well as irritability and even death.

With OSA awareness becoming more prevalent, doctors and companies like Sleep Group Solutions are taking a stand on the fight against OSA. Advanced technology, education, in office training and leading industry seminars-Sleep Group Solutions is helping dentists treat patients with OSA. Doctor partnerships, such as that with Dr. Tache from Snoring & Sleep Apnea Treatment Centers help to raise awareness and lower the effects and side effects of OSA. “When we help our patients breathe without obstruction, we see vast improvements in their health. Those suffering with symptoms of depression, anxiety, fatigue and blood pressure problems seem to drastically decline, if not disappear.” Says Dr. Tache on successfully treating OSA to overcome other health issues.

Like many dentists, Dr. Tache began to incorporate Sleep Medicine after patients began to express problems with their CPAP. He noticed a strong correlation between patients with TMD problems (orofacial and TMJ pain) and disorders of sleep; it compelled him to seek additional education on the matter, and he attended a Sleep Group Solutions Sleep Medicine Seminar.

Dr. Tache has treated many patients with OSA. One patient in particular proved the severity of OSA and its side effects, if remained untreated. ‘A woman was referred to me for TMJ.  She had been previously diagnosed with Bi-Polar Depression, and mentioned awakening with severe jaw, head, and neck pain. After treating her with appliances, she would get a little better, but still in pain and experiencing even more uncontrollable depression.” Dr. Tache went on to suggest the patient seek a sleep study, as there had to be an undiagnosed sleep and breathing problem. The patient complied, and the results proved she had OSA (sever level). She was urgently treated by Dr. Tache with advanced technology (Eccovision Airway Acoustics: SGS). “This treatment brought her apnea down to safe levels, and nearly eliminated her depression as well as extreme fatigue.  She later told me her depression was most likely due to her severe untreated obstructive sleep apnea. She is a most grateful patient.” Dr. Tache explains.

Thanks to the efforts of Sleep Group Solutions and dental partnerships such as Dr. Tache, the treatment of OSA is more readily available, and dentists across the country are stepping up to help those in need. For more information on sleep apnea, and information on how to attend a sleep medicine seminar, please log onto http://www. SleepGS. com.

During that time, he trained dentists in the field of tempromandibular dysfunction and orofacial pain. Trade newspaper touts GHTÂ’s revolutionary approach

JOLIET, Ill. (PRWEB) September 4, 2005

The Network Marketing Business Journal, the leading direct sales and multi-level industry newspaper for the past 20 years, has featured Global Health Trax as its “Company of the Month” in its September 2005 issue.

Global Health Trax, a solid, eight-year-old company with scientifically proven, nutritional supplement products, has the distinct advantage of being a proven company experiencing a surge of rapid growth.

“Global Health Trax (GHT) now has the distinct advantage of being a proven company experiencing a surge of rapid growth,” wrote the Network Marketing Business Journal, formerly named Money Maker’s Monthly, the leading direct sales and multi-level industry newspaper for the past 20 years. The trade newspaper has featured Global Health Trax as its “Company of the Month” in its September 2005 issue. The feature article went on to explain that GHT is a solid, eight-year-old company with scientifically proven, nutritional supplement products.

Oxygen Elements PlusTM, its patented, best-selling product priced at less than a dollar a day (affordable to the masses), is needed by everyone (due to pollution in the air, nutrient-depleted food, etc. . . .) and gives customers an immediate feeling of “wellness” within days, the article went on to say. GHT’s products have satisfied millions of customers with high-quality health benefits backed by modern science and research.

GHT is experiencing a growth explosion for several reasons, the trade newspaper explained. GHT has created a powerful, integrated marketing system, a world-class training program, a Fortune 500-level customer service department, and a patent-pending compensation program to go along with its eight-year, ultra-successful track record of customer satisfaction. Many of GHTÂ’s products are unique, patented and produced within GHTÂ’s own in-house, FDA-inspected production plant and quality assurance lab, guaranteeing top-of-the-line quality products.

GHT has created a powerful new (yet decades old), proven-success model by providing each new Independent Business Owner – “IBO” (distributor) with a totally turnkey business. The company creates a true, strategic alliance with each new IBO by taking on the responsibility of being a bona fide leader and upline coach and sponsor to every single new person who enrolls as a business builder. Even though many companies talk about support and training, GHT has validated its statements with solid proof by supplying its IBOs with first-class, unique and proven business-building tools.

Good Samaritan Issues Call For Blood Donors

Good Samaritan Issues Call For Blood Donors

Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY, is issuing an urgent call for blood donations, saying that supplies have dipped to unacceptably low levels. Blood shortfalls are common throughout the country in the summertime. But the Blood Bank at Good Samaritan says this year's shortage is unusually severe -- and especially serious in the Lower Hudson Valley.

(PRWEB) July 16, 2005

Good Samaritan Hospital is issuing an urgent call for blood donations, saying that supplies have dipped to unacceptably low levels.

Blood shortfalls are common throughout the country in the summertime. But the Blood Bank at Good Samaritan says this year's shortage is unusually severe -- and especially serious in the Lower Hudson Valley.

To help ease this shortage, Good Samaritan Hospital is sponsoring a series of blood drives to help meet the urgent need for blood donors in our community. Blood drives are scheduled for:

-July 19th at Novartis Pharmaceutical on Old Mill Road in Suffern from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.

-July 31st at St. JohnÂ’s Church in Sloatsburg from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

In addition to the sponsored blood drives, the donor room hours at Good Samaritan Hospital are Monday through Friday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Although it is best to call ahead, walk-ins are welcome. To schedule a donation, call the Blood Bank at Good Samaritan Hospital at (845) 368-5178.

Blood supplies in the Lower Hudson Valley typically drop off in the summer months, when regular donors are not available due to busy schedules and vacations. In addition, the recent hot weather has caused donations to drop significantly. Therefore, all potential blood donors are asked to participate.

Good Samaritan Hospital is part of the Bon Secours Charity Health System, which also includes St. Anthony Community Hospital in Warwick, NY and Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, NY. Additionally, Bon Secours Charity Health System provides the services of a Certified Home Health Agency, two long-term care facilities, an assisted living and adult home facility and several other medical programs. For more information about blood donor services, or any other program, contact Good Samaritan Hospital at (845) 368-5000.

Bash Dibra and his Paws Across America celebrate National Pet Month

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 2, 2007

Bash Dibra, animal behaviorist, celebrity pet trainer and author sees the importance of the human animal bond and is giving his full support to National Pet Month which takes place during May.

On Sunday, May 6th, Bash will be at Riverside Park for the American Cancer Society "Dogswalk Against Cancer -- New York -- a non-competitive dog walk-a-thon to raise money for the fight against human and animal cancers. He will be signing copies of his latest book "StarPet, How to Make Your Pet A Star." And Bash stresses "walking your dog is healthy exercise for both you and your dog!"

On Saturday, May 12th, Bash will participate in Bide-A-Wee's "Fitness with Fido in New York" as their "celebrity dog trainer.' Participants and their dogs meet at the Pedestrian Entrance at 60th Street and Fifth Avenue at 10:00AM to take a walk in the park... Central Park that is. Walking your dog is a fun way for both you both to get the exercise you need. It's also a good way to "get into the habit" of walking your dog every day. Bash says exercising your dog can solve many problems that you might be having with them such as destructive behavior, excessive barking, and just plain boredom. And before you know it, its lots of fun for you, your dog will love you for it, and your neighbors will be happy too.

Bash is an animal behaviorist, and a celebrity dog trainer -- he's trained pets of stars such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Ron Howard, and Martin Scorsese. He's also a renowned author of six books and a video, "Teach Your Dog to Behave; Dog Training By Bash, DogSpeak, CatSpeak; Your Dream Dog: a Guide to Choosing the Right Breed for You," StarPet, "How To Make Your Pet A Star," and a video and DVD "Teach your Dog to Behave."

Eau Claire, WI (PRWEB) February 4, 2006

Culpepper Sales, LLC, owners of the Swirl brand beverages, have signed their first Wisconsin distribution agreement with Diane Fisk of Swirl of NW Wisconsin and Irene Norgren of Swirl of Wisconsin. Swirl, a line of high-quality, frozen beverages, started serving up it’s more than 500 flavors in schools, retail businesses and hospitality outlets across Wisconsin in November 2005.

“Irene and I had discussed starting a business together since college and the right opportunity finally came along,” said Fisk. “A friend of Irene’s family introduced us to Swirl and after learning about the nutritional benefits and Culpepper Sales business philosophy of the ‘3-legged stool’ (excellent product, excellent service, excellent machines), we believed we had the opportunity to run a really fun, flexible business selling products we truly believed in.”

Because a six ounce serving of Swirl’s 100 percent juice beverage is nutritionally equivalent to a serving of fruit according to The Five A Day for Better Health Program (www.5aday. gov/what/index. html (http://www.5aday. gov/what/index. html)), Swirl is a fun alternative for schools to use in their breakfast and lunch programs. The taste and bright colors appeal to children and the nutritional value appeals to parents. It also presents great profit potential as an alternative to use in concession stands and fund raisers. Swirl line of frozen beverages includes drinks that are noncarbonated, caffeine free, made with 50 or 100 percent real juice, and enriched with calcium and vitamins A, C and D and flavors with low carbs and no sugar added.

“This distributorship gives Diane and I the opportunity to meet the personal and professional goals we set back in college,” said Norgren.

In addition to Swirl’s 50 and 100 percent real juice flavors, other varieties include: PowerSwirl, a sports drink formulated to restore energy and electrolytes; frozen cappuccinos; adult beverages; smoothies; and SWIRLITE, a low carb, no added sugar beverage which is 50 percent real juice and sweetened with sucralose (Splenda®).

Contact Diane Fisk at (715) 296-2558 and Irene Norgren at (715) 579-6122 for more information on offering Swirl in Wisconsin establishments.

Deduplication Trend Eases the Strain of Medical Records Storage

Deduplication Trend Eases the Strain of Medical Records Storage

One of the keys to affordable healthcare is the ability to store and stream high-volume electronic medical records. Bellmawr, NJ (Vocus) November 18, 2009

One of the keys to affordable healthcare is the ability to store and stream electronic medical records, providing physicians, hospitals, HMOs, and other practitioners with information relevant to diagnosing and treating patients.

To prevent runaway storage growth, healthcare providers must ensure that medical data is only stored once. For example, X-rays and other images contain a lot of duplicate data objects – resulting in wasted storage. When these images are replicated or backed up, the duplicate objects are themselves duplicated, thus exacerbating the storage problem.

PBG helps eliminate the duplicate data problem through deduplication, the process of recognizing – and rejecting – redundant data objects. PBG employs leading-edge deduplication technology from NetApp to enable enterprises clients to:
Reduce their initial storage spend; Prolong the interval between storage upgrades; Increase data transmission speed and lower bandwidth requirements; and Store more data online, for longer periods.

One of PBG’s clients is MobilexUSA, America's leading provider of mobile imaging services. MobilexUSA is responsible for conducting, digitizing, and storing millions of electronic x-rays, ultrasounds, and electrocardiograms, delivering that information – on demand and within seconds – to radiologists and other specialists located across the country and around the world. Deduplication helps MobilexUSA manage their storage growth while continuing to provide fast and reliable service to their customers.

Fairfax Va. (PRWEB) August 22, 2010

The Lions Clubs of Northern Virginia (District 24-A) and the Virginia Lions Eye Institute Foundation (VLEIF) will furnish over $160,000 in equipment to set up an additional low vision exam site at the Virginia Department for the Blind and Visually Impaired (DBVI) Fairfax office.

District 24-A Lions have entered into an agreement with the DBVI whereby the Lions will furnish the Fairfax regional DBVI clinic with a complete set of low vision examination equipment that will provide comprehensive low vision evaluations to visually impaired patients.

The DBVI catchment area covers approximately 2.3 million people and currently has eighteen examination sites.

The agreement was officially signed on Aug. 19, by Lion District 24-A Governor, Dennis Brining; DBVI Deputy Commissioner for Services, Robert Burton; and Virginia Lions Eye Institute President, Elden Wright.

“We are very excited to be working with an organization that shares a common vision. Today we bring our strengths together to reach a larger portion of the population with hopes to continue to expand this effort in the years to come,” stated Lions District 24-A Governor Brining. “Today is the first step of what I hope to be many.”

In addition to the furnishing of equipment, District 24-A Lions have agreed to maintain and calibrate the equipment as well as provide volunteer support to assist in the Low Vision exam site.

“The Department of the Blind and Visually Impaired is very pleased to be working with the Lions,” stated DBVI Commissioner Burton. “We look forward to a long and positive relationship that will benefit the blind and visually impaired throughout this region.”

The term of the current agreement is for three years. The purpose for this agreement is to provide DBVI low vision practitioners access to equipment as well as prescriptive aids on the premises of DBVI offices in Fairfax.

“Broad coverage low vision support has been a goal of VLEIF all along,” noted Wright. “This is a great start; it is the first of multiple centers we plan to support in Northern Virginia”.

DBVI plans to use this exam equipment to open its nineteenth exam site for patients in the Northern Virginia area.

Lions have been involved with the DBVI for many years. Today’s agreement is an extension of this long-term relationship.

Virginia Lions Eye Institute Foundation (VLEIF) operates as a separate entity with the partnership of the Inova Health System. It is governed by a Board of Directors representing the Lions Clubs of District 24-A (Northern Virginia), community ophthalmologists, and the Inova Health Systems Foundation.

VLEIF funds are used for the purchase of equipment, education, scholarships, and clinical research. Additionally, VLEI supports symposia and continuing medical education for nurses and para-professionals in the ophthalmic field. VLEIF recently instituted a scholarship award for sight handicapped individuals.
District 24-A Lions includes 69 clubs spanning from Leesburg to Montrose VA. With over 1905 members proudly living up to Lions Clubs International motto “We Serve”, and taking on Helen Keller’s challenge to the Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness."

Since 1917, Lions have worked tirelessly to aid their communities, the blind and visually impaired, as well as the hearing impaired.
The Virginia Department for the Blind and Visually Impaired (DBVI) is committed to providing quality services to assist Virginia's citizens who are blind, deaf blind or vision impaired in achieving their maximum level of employment, education, and personal independence. Parity Grows Irish Operations to Support Contract Wins Valued in Excess of £13 Million

Parity the IT solutions group, shows commitment to growing Antrim and Belfast offices on back of contract wins including British American Tobacco (BAT), Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) e-Fire Project and the Cabinet Office Fast Stream Programme.

(PRWEB) June 19, 2006

Parity the IT solutions group, shows commitment to growing Antrim and Belfast offices on back of contract wins including British American Tobacco (BAT), Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) e-Fire Project and the Cabinet Office Fast Stream Programme.

As well as winning a contract extension with the Cabinet Office to provide candidate administration services for the Civil Service Fast Stream, (a training and development programme for high calibre graduates) worth £3.5 million over the next 3 years, Parity is developing e-Fire, the UK’s first online Fire and Rescue Service portal in a contract worth £2million.

In addition, British American Tobacco, the international tobacco group, renewed its contract with Parity. The three-year framework agreement has a fixed value of £3 million, with additional consultancy and IT development (http://www. parity. net/solutions/microsoft) projects bringing the total value to an estimated £6 million.

Critical to securing these wins, has been Parity Ireland (http://www. parity. net/ireland)’s core software development and applications management expertise based in the Antrim office where the majority of the 55 local staff are based and where key elements of the work are being undertaken for these contracts.

Alwyn Welch, Chief Executive of the Parity Group said of the contract wins:

“Our Antrim operation’s contribution to these wins was very important and will be matched by our continued investment in the area. Many firms are choosing to ‘offshore’ IT services to countries in South Asia and Eastern Europe. However I’m delighted to say that we are able to use our strong and well established operation in Ireland as a competitive and credible alternative. We intend to deliver more work, and thereby create and sustain more jobs in Northern Ireland in the next year from clients on the mainland and locally.”

Jeremy Fitch, Managing Director, Business International at Invest Northern Ireland,

“We are delighted with Parity’s continued investment in Northern Ireland. It is a very positive development for the economy here to see a UK based Plc acknowledging the contribution of the highly skilled Northern Ireland workforce in these major UK contract wins.”

The Parity Group operates in such sectors as government, utilities, telecommunications, finance, transport and professional services and also runs the successful Premiere Graduate Programme that has delivered £70m in benefits to over 7000 clients since its inception.

Summer Camp in Pennsylvania Helps Teenage Girl Tackle it All

Summer Camp in Pennsylvania Helps Teenage Girl Tackle it All

Professional Dancer and Web Designer at age 14.

Philadelphia, PA, (PRWEB) February 9, 2006

A few years ago, at age 14, Vera seemed to be an average 9th grade student attending a private high school in Pennsylvania. While busy acclimating to the new pressures of high school, she was enjoying her classes and making new friends. However, Vera’s ambition to succeed far exceeds the average high school student. Not only was Vera an accomplished pianist who played at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia, this honor student also danced in the 2000 Pennsylvania Ballet’s performance of the “Nutcracker.”

In addition, Vera was hired as a web designer since age 14. After attending a web design course at one of the highly acclaimed summer camps in Pennsylvania, iD Tech Camps (www. internalDrive. com), on the Villanova University campus, Vera found a new love for technology and the skills she needed to be hired to design and maintain the Urban Man page of the Philadelphia Urban Solutions website. iD Tech Camps provides hands-on technology summer camp programs for ages 7-17 at 40 prestigious university campuses nationwide, including the Villanova University and Carnegie Mellon University campuses in Pennsylvania.

Vera’s mother, Yvonne, not only recognized Vera’s strengths in the arts, but also encouraged the importance of technology in today’s society. She chose to send her daughter to iD Tech Camps as an overnight camper to get the experience of being away from home at a prestigious university while introducing her to web design. Vera had a working knowledge of computers, yet was a beginner in web design. Vera was able to work at her own pace because the program offers personalized attention with a 6:1 student to instructor ratio. “The instructors at iD Tech Camps were nice, encouraging, and down to earth. I looked up to them,” said Vera. She jumped right in and in one week, Vera created a website about a professional basketball player who worked his way up through the trenches, which her mom thought was excellent. “The site was clean, to the point, had nice colors to it, and looked really professional,” said Yvonne.

After seeing the professional web design skills Vera had acquired, Yvonne hired her as a web designer for her company, Philadelphia Urban Solutions, a health education, prevention, and outreach program geared towards youth ages 12 to 20. The Urban Solutions website has a cartoon character mascot named Urban Man who lives in the city and uses brain power to get by. Urban Man delivers certain life principles like friendship, loyalty, and integrity. Vera’s job was to write about the subject and create the site using that theme.

Vera was paid for her time working with her mother, just like Yvonne would have paid any other web designer to maintain the site. “When Vera starts looking at colleges, it will be a unique gift to have web design skills that will give her a competitive advantage.” says Yvonne. Of course, Yvonne is looking forward to sending Vera’s younger sister to iD Tech Camps.

How does Vera, who integrates web design in her class curriculum projects, feel about her new found passion for technology? “I learned a skill where I can gain respect and now earn extra money.”

About iD Tech Camps - InternalDrive

Children's Hospital Receives Grant for Health Literacy

Children's Hospital Central California has received a grant of $25,000 from Cardinal Health to help ensure non-English speaking patient families understand how to care for their children after they are discharged.

(Vocus) April 14, 2008

Children's Hospital Central California has received a grant of $25,000 from Cardinal Health to help ensure non-English speaking patient families understand how to care for their children after they are discharged.

The grant will help support a program that provides telephone lines detailing discharge information for patients in three languages. When a patient is discharged the physician writes a discharge order and instructions. The child's nurse uses a medical interpreter to explain the instructions to the family, and then gives them a written instruction sheet. The new program will create individual audio recordings of those discharge instructions and upload them to a special phone line, accessible to the parents of the child for 30 days after discharge.

“Low health literacy is strongly related to poor health outcomes,” says Dr. Samuel Lehman, Medical Director of Patient Safety at Children's Hospital, “We know that up to 80% of all patients forget their physician's instructions as soon as they leave the doctor's office. Language difficulties compound this problem.”

Initially the program will provide audio instructions in Hmong, Mixteca and Spanish. Each recording will also include information encouraging patients and families to contact their doctor and request further information if they are unclear about any of the instructions. The idea is to help families stay better informed and therefore create better outcomes for their children.

The program has three objectives:

1. To enhance communication between the patient and caregivers.
2. To help families better understand discharge instructions, and reduce the change for medication errors or patient harm.
3. To encourage family and patient involvement in care.

This program is designed to be a foundation for a larger and more comprehensive health literacy program. Children's hopes to expand it to cover other care areas and other languages in coming years. The current program should be up and running in Fall 2008.

SurePayroll Insights Survey: Small Businesses Harnessing the Power of Social Networking for Business

SurePayroll Insights Survey: Small Businesses Harnessing the Power of Social Networking for Business

SurePayroll survey finds that six out of 10 small business owners have an average to extensive understanding of social networking

Glenview, IL (PRWEB) October 20, 2008

According to a recent survey conducted by online payroll service SurePayroll, the majority of small business owners believe there is a clear business value in popular social networking Web sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

When SurePayroll asked small business owners if they believe online social networking has a place in the business world, 55% said yes. What's more, the survey indicates that one out of every five of the small business owners polled had actually obtained at least one new customer as a direct result of using social media.

"It's excellent that so many small businesses are starting to recognize the benefits of social networking," says SurePayroll Online Marketing Manager David Rohrer. "Social networking offers small business owners an inexpensive and effective way for them to connect with their customers and prospects."

According to Rohrer, the online presence of small businesses is becoming more important to remain competitive with big businesses.

"It is no longer just an outlet for personal use -- it's rapidly becoming a must for business success," says Rohrer. "Big business is tapping into the blogosphere and posting their company profile pages in online communities. Small business owners need to do the same. What's so great about the online world is you don't need a million-dollar marketing budget. In fact, the most effective online connections are free personal communications from a business owner to their community."

According to a recent September 2008 study conducted by Opinion Research Corporation (http://www. opinionresearch. com/) for Cone (http://www. coneinc. com/), your customers want businesses to get involved. The study reveals that six out of 10 Americans who use social media interact with companies on social media Web sites. Likewise, 85% of social media users believe companies should interact with their consumers through social media outlets.

With more than 50 million non-college attendees using Facebook today, the prominence of social media is growing. Professional social networking site LinkedIn grew 187% over the past year. Based on a research project developed by Universal McCann, 36% of online users think more positively about companies that have blogs. In the SurePayroll survey, 85% of business owners participating in social media for business are doing so by way of blogging online.

While the majority of SurePayroll respondents indicated social media is useful for business purposes, a third answered that they were unsure of social media's role in the business world.

Rohrer says some small businesses just need to be educated on how their company can get involved in social networking and offers these tips:

--- How to Optimize the ROI of Social Networking ---

1. Know Your Target Audience

Digg, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn all offer different advantages to a small business.
Know which outlet is most effective for your message and audience. Start a blog, or comment on other blogs to contribute to what those in your industry are saying. Share videos like "how-to" clips or tours of your business. Join groups like Google Groups, Yahoo Groups or industry-specific sites that are related to the products or services you offer.

Yahoo! Answers and Linkedin Answers are great outlets for service-based business, as they allow you to establish yourself as an expert in your field. Matt McGee of SmallBusinessSEM. com wrote a great blog post about Yahoo Answers (http://www. smallbusinesssem. com/a-guide-to-social-marketing-on-yahoo-answers/1056/) to get you started.

2. Get Started…Without a Financial Investment

No one can argue the fact that time is money. If you are like most smaller businesses with few-to-no resources, you can still participate by simply listening. The cost is minimal and the payoff can be great. You can listen to what people are saying about you and your competitors. You will learn what people dislike about your products and services and see if anyone is providing suggested improvements. You may even find forums where people are giving you some of the best testimonials you have ever heard, but you have to be listening to hear them. Marketing Pilgrim has written a Beginner's Guide to Social Media Marketing (http://www. marketingpilgrim. com/2008/04/social-media-marketing-beginners-guide. html) that will help get you started. Also, read Chris Brogan's Social Media Power Secret (http://www. chrisbrogan. com/social-media-power-secret-listening/) to learn about where to listen.

3. Maintain Your Commitment

Being available and engaging with your online audience is essential. All your online communications define the level of success you'll have in your targeted community, including the personal touch you put in your:
Blog posts Blog comments StumbleUpon reviews Twitter tweets

If you create a blog for your company, post regularly and respond to comments. Give your blog a personality and make sure it's not just another place for your press releases.

If you choose to join Yahoo Answers, StumbleUpon, Digg or any other sites, just be active and participate. The worst thing you can do is blatantly try to market your company, and the best thing you can do is simply be part of the community.

Twitter allows you to communicate up-to-date news about initiatives, interactive support for customers, and is an open forum for discussion. Being transparent with your business motives and happenings allows for more consumer trust and builds a relationship founded on the belief that you're always available.

Chris Winfield of 10e20 wrote a great post about the 10 Simple Steps to Social Media Success In 2008 (http://searchengineland. com/10-simple-steps-to-social-media-success-in-2008-13087.php) to help you along the way.
