She got started on her quest to find healthier ways to cook the food she loves when she struggled to lose weight following the birth of twins in 2003.

“Dieting didn’t work for me, and it doesn’t work for most people because we end up craving the foods we’re not supposed to eat,” Potter says. “And most cookbooks for eating healthier include ingredients I can’t find in my small-town grocery store.”

In exasperation, and to cook food her family wanted to eat, she began experimenting with ways to make the same dishes she’d always made, but with more nutritional value. Making them taste like the original dishes was paramount; without that, she knew her plan wouldn’t work. She averages three attempts to convert a recipe to a healthy version that tastes the same.

Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board (TRWIB) today unveiled the first phase of a supply-demand study that analyzed online job postings and provides information about tens of thousands of unfilled jobs available in the Pittsburgh region.

“Our goal with this analysis is to demystify the tens of thousands of unfilled jobs that are known to exist in Pittsburgh,” said Stefani Pashman, Chief Executive Officer of TRWIB. “This analysis provides a compelling overview of the jobs that are currently advertized, including information about education required and wages offered. It also explains what kinds of companies are hiring and where the jobs are located. The good news is that real, well paid jobs exist in our region. However, it appears that a significant mismatch between the skills in demand and the available talent is holding our region back. TRWIB’s ultimate goal is to achieve a balance between the people looking for work and the available job opportunities.”

The analysis offers insights and unveils trends about jobs that were posted online between May of 2005 and July of 2010. The data analyzed came from The PA Department of Labor and Industry - Center for Workforce Information and Analysis (CWIA), Wanted Analytics – Help Wanted Online and The Bureau of Labor Statistics and consists of point-in-time tallies of unduplicated online job ads.

To complete the workforce supply-demand analysis, the organization plans to connect directly with employers, job seekers, workforce professionals, and economic developers to complement the findings of the online job posting analysis. Ultimately, the full supply-demand study will lead to strategies that will match available talent directly to open jobs.

Analysis highlights and findings include:
The majority of the jobs that were posted online offer wages that are significantly above the recommended family sustaining wage level ($28,500). Filling these jobs would have a direct and positive impact on our region’s economy. In terms of the skills that are needed to fill these jobs, the analysis shows that over 60% of the posted jobs required more than a high school diploma but less than a bachelor’s degree. Almost 50% of the job postings are concentrated in the top 5 clusters which include management occupations, computer and mathematical occupations, sales and related occupations, office and administrative support occupations, and healthcare practitioners and technical occupations. The top five occupations, representing 35% of all 2010 online job postings for the Pittsburgh region are: nursing aides and orderlies, retail salespersons, registered nurses, customer service representatives, and supervisors of retail sales workers. Most of the skills that are in demand are occupation specific but are not industry specific. These jobs reflect transferable skills that are applicable across several industry sectors. As a result, jobseekers have broader opportunities available and should explore and enhance their skills in different settings, rather than focus on just one industry. Between the years 2005 and 2010, the number of online job postings oscillated between 19,956 (July of 2005) and 46,819 (June of 2010). Between 2005 and 2010, the number of unemployed people in the Pittsburgh MSA always surpassed the number of online job postings. The average ratio was two unemployed people to one job posting. A true imbalance exists between the jobs that are available and the people who are unemployed. If all of the posted jobs that are currently available were filled, the unemployment rate would be 4.7%. The role of staffing agencies that fill temporary employment positions has increased dramatically, with 40% of the online postings reflecting temporary work. In June of 2010, the number of unemployed people surpassed the number of online job postings by 58,500. The smallest gap of 1,190 occurred in April of 2007. “The analysis released today offers valuable insights that will help connect workers with jobs,” said David Malone, chairman of the Pennsylvania Workforce Investment Board and President and CEO of Gateway Financial. “TRWIB’s plans to connect directly with employers, placement agencies, unemployed and underemployed people is a critical step for our region as we work to break down the barriers that are keeping us from filling these jobs.“

In addition, to give the market a healthier profile, many products are being overhauled, with artificial colours and flavours being replaced with fruit juices and other natural alternatives.

The market continues to be dominated by three major players: Cadbury Trebor Bassett (part of Cadbury Schweppes PLC), Masterfoods (the confectionery division of Mars UK Ltd) and Nestlé Rowntree. The best-selling brands are long established and the sector has now all but given up on introducing new brands. Instead, the tendency has been to extend existing brands with new flavours and/or into new product areas, taking advantage of established names by turning them into umbrella brands. For example, during 2005, the celebration of the centenary of the Cadbury Dairy Milk brand offered a strong opportunity for new products and formats for the label.

Licensed products also continue to perform well; however, the focus now tends to be more on shorter-term tie-ins related to film and digital versatile disc (DVD) releases. Major events in 2005 were headlined by the release of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Nestlé Rowntree's licensing agreement allowed the introduction of a successful range of new products under the Wonka brand, as well as an ideal focus for promotions.

As in other food sectors, confectionery continues to come under pressure as a relatively `unhealthy' food. Recent government legislation, such as banning fatty foods from vending machines, is likely to have an adverse effect on confectionery sales through some channels. However, the UK is unlikely to lose its place as one of the world's major per-capita consumers of confectionery and the outlook for the market remains positive.

Data released in June 2007 by Thomson Scientific, the global scientific community's chief reference point for measuring research performance, show that on a per capita basis, Australia's research efforts are impressive and it is the number two country in the world in terms of all research published.

 Thomson Scientific ranked 13 countries based on published scientific papers that reached the top one per cent of most-cited papers (as identified by its Web of Science) worldwide between 1996 to 2006.

Fred Welz, Senior Investment Commissioner for North America, said that with just over 20 million people -- about the same as the state of New York -- Australia had the smallest population of the 13 countries surveyed.

"Between 1996 and 2006 Australia published a total of 248,189 papers making it the second most productive country to publish research papers on a per capita basis."

"Given the sheer size of the US, it is little surprise that it published more than ten times the number of scientific papers than Australia. Interestingly, when adjusted for population, Australia is ranked second and the US slips to fourth accounting for about 20% fewer papers produced than Australia on a per capita basis," he said.

An important key measure of research quality is the number of times other researchers cite papers, and against this criterion Australia ranked a respectable eighth with a total of 2,804 papers classed among the top one per cent of most cited papers by the scientific community.

Again, when this is adjusted for population, Australia jumps to fourth, demonstrating the quality of Australian researchers with published papers extensively cited by the scientific community around the world. This also points to the significance and relevance of the research being carried out.

When these results are also placed in the context of relative expenditure on research -- where the NIH supported US basic research to the tune of approximately $US 28.6 billion in 2006, the 2004-5 Australian government expenditure on research and development in Australia was equivalent to US$2.172.17 billion -- demonstrating a healthy return on investment in research in Australia.

Welz said this information and data supports the long term vision of the Australian Government's A$83 billion (approx US$7.2 billion) innovation strategy, first announced in 2001 and then further strengthened in 2004. In May this year the Australian Government also introduced substantial research and development tax concessions together with other incentives to enhance the commercialization effort of Australian industry in a US$1.2 billion support package over the next 10 years. The important new tax change, which allows claims for the 175% tax concession for any intellectual property developed in Australia which is held in the corporate home office of a multinational corporation, is a positive step in the global development and commercialization of research and technology developed in Australia.

With its greater focus towards commercialization and Australia's combination of a low cost research base and impressive pool of talent, Australia is demonstrating itself to be a highly competitive destination for research.

More than 80 individuals attended the launch, which will now be followed by a series of more focused workshops over the balance of 2008.

The next event, planned for early June, will focus on exploring a range of issues, including human-ICT interaction, techno-animism, and homeliness, in order to analyze the meaning of ICT and ageing from a socio-anthropological perspective. The framework of the workshop will be designed to give awareness to the wide range of societal and cultural differences, e. g. different family structures, health care models and accessibility to ICTs, while maintaining an overall European perspective.

Additional workshops to be held in 2008 will engage experts across various areas of technological expertise as well as individuals with expertise in ethics, privacy, and legal arenas, and are scheduled for the latter part of the year. These workshops will aid in defining trends within ICT affecting the ageing community, discuss relevant ethical and privacy issues and weigh the trade-offs between privacy, ethics and technological innovation. The topics of the workshops will be focused in five key areas: ubiquitous computing, ubiquitous communication, intelligent user interface, assistive technologies, and adaptive software. A call for papers for experts to join these workshops is expected in the near future.
