Matt Parker Atop His Charger Reaches Kansas

Matt Parker Atop His Charger Reaches Kansas

Horseman logs over 1,700 miles and crosses Colorado

SYRACUSE, KS (PRWEB) August 27, 2004 -

– Cross-country horseback traveler, Matt Parker has made it through another state with his horse Little Face and mule, Danny Boy, continuing his quest to become the first horseman to cross the nation on the American Discovery Trail (ADT).

With more than 1,700 miles under his belt, Matt hopes to become the first person on horseback to complete the 5,000 miles of the ADT, the only coast-to-coast, non-motorized route across the country.

Matt was delayed two weeks early on in Colorado, due to unusually late snow fall on the Grand Mesa and had to wait it out until the snow melted, keeping him in the state longer than anticipated.

The cross-country journey, has presented Matt with some adversity -- inclement weather, injured animals and his own health -- but Matt has persevered.

“I’ve come far, both physically and psychologically,” said Matt, “and yet, it’s only fueled my desire to press on. I have met some real characters along this journey who have carried my spirits higher.”

To date, Matt has traveled more than 1,700 miles -- crossing California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado -- and is willful he can traverse this great nation, on his horse accompanied by his mule.

Matt anticipates completing the 570 miles of the ADT across Kansas in 30 days.

Updates and details of this record journey will be posted on Matt ParkerÂ’s website at http://www. rideofpassage. com (http://www. rideofpassage. com).

Spinal Aid Decompression Center Opens in Orlando

Spinal Aid Decompression Center Opens in Orlando

The town of Orlando recently became home to the first Spinal Aid Center in Orange County. The Spinal Aid Center offers a relatively new technology called non-surgical spinal decompression - a treatment that offers new hope to sufferers of severe, chronic back pain.

Orlando, FL (PRWEB) July 14, 2006

The town of Orlando recently became home to the first Spinal Aid Center in Orange County. The Spinal Aid Center offers a relatively new technology called non-surgical spinal decompression - a treatment that offers new hope to sufferers of severe, chronic back pain.

Dr. David Nahali of the new Spinal Aid Center, says he opened the facility because so many of his patients came to him complaining of chronic back pain caused by, disc bulging, disc herniation, facet arthorosis, failed back syndrome, stenosis and sciatica. They were convinced that pills and surgery were their only option to relieve their pain.

Gary Claxton, Vice President of the Henry J. Kaiser Foundation, which monitors health care spending says, "The rising costs and the growth in the number of back surgeries is a good example of why healthcare expenditures are more than double inflation.” Dr. Doug Burton, surgeon and senior spine research professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center says, "There is a major shift to Spinal-fusion procedures that use expensive mechanical devices to help fuse diseased vertebra together. However," Dr. Burton added, "it's an uncertain outcome.” He further stated that these procedures are "expensive and have not resulted in significantly better outcomes" and he limits the procedure himself.

Until now, most physicians have been left with only the prescription for medications, invasive procedures known as neuromodulation and neuroablation or surgery. Unfortunately, a lot of chronic back pain patients end up addicted to narcotic pain meds. The scientific discovery known as Non-surgical spinal decompression is a medical breakthrough in the non-drug, non-surgical approach to chronic back pain that works according to the American Journal of Pain Management. They reported an 86 percent success rate in patients suffering from herniated discs after receiving non-surgical spinal decompression.

In many cases of back pain, bulging or herniated disc material is often the culprit. The bulging material puts pressure on the nerves and creates pain that can travel into the buttocks and even down the legs. Non-surgical decompression relieves pain by stretching the spine, effectively creating a vacuum (negative pressure) that draws the bulging and herniated disc material back into place. As the pressure inside the disc decreases, so does the pain. Even more important, the patient can be considered "cured" and should not have to return.

Unlike surgery, there is no recovery period for non-surgical spinal decompression. Patients may go home or return to a non-strenuous activities after their treatment. The cost is less than one-tenth the cost of back surgery, and many insurance companies cover portions of the treatment.

Moore County Schools Breaks into Top Ten in Latest Technology Rankings

Moore County Schools Breaks into Top Ten in Latest Technology Rankings

Moore County Schools hits new milestone in latest state rankings as school district continues to invest in new computers, teacher training and other technologies.

Carthage, N. C. (PRWEB) November 20, 2006

Moore County Schools has surged to No. 8 in the latest state rankings for technology in the classroom, according to the latest rankings released by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. By cracking the top ten this year, Moore County School continues its impressive march toward the top of the state's rankings after placing near the bottom four years ago. The school district, which placed 111th out of 115 school districts in the state in 2002, climbed to 91st place in 2003, 39th place in 2004 and 16th place last year.

"It's tremendous to reach No. 8 in the latest state rankings," says James Tagliareni, chief technology officer at Moore County Schools. "Everyone at Moore County Schools deserves credit for infusing technology into our classrooms, from the school district leadership who made technology a top priority four years ago to every school principal and teacher who embraced the computers, high-speed Internet access and technology training that we provided them. Our continued strong showing in the state rankings is proof that we are instilling into our students the technology skills they will need to compete in the 21st Century workforce."

Moore County Schools, which has purchased more than 5,000 new computers over the past four years, continues to improve the district's technology infrastructure without increasing its budget. The district, which last year had 2.5 students for each Internet-connected computer, now has 2.29 students per Internet-connected computer. The state average is 3.43 students per computer. In addition, 100 percent of Moore County School's classrooms are connected with high-speed Internet access, compared to 98.5 percent in the state.

Moore County Schools continued its trend of squeezing the most out of its Information Technology budget. This year, the district's average cost to install, operate and maintain a network of computers was $66 per pupil, a 22 percent drop from the previous year and less than half the state average of $139 per pupil. Last year, computers cost Moore County Schools $87 per pupil.

Moore County Schools had many technology highlights this past school year, including online technology training for teachers, and additional computers, personal digital assistants and interactive whiteboards in the classroom. Other highlights include:

The district's Office of Information Technology dramatically increased the speed of Internet access to every classroom, from 10 megabits per second (mbps) to 100 mbps, while saving the district money in the process. The Office of Information Technology negotiated a new deal with an Internet Service Provider that provides the faster speeds at a lower cost. The deal saves the district $150,000 a year.

In March, Union Pines High School became one of three schools in the country to win a $250,000 grant from Dell, Microsoft and Intel's "FutureReady" program, given to schools with the best plans for incorporating technology in the classroom. Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and Dell chairman Michael Dell picked the winners. The grant is providing hardware and software to Union Pines High School.

Aberdeen Elementary School last fall received a $250,000 grant by the North Carolina Technology Association to purchase new desktop and notebook computers, printers and projectors, as well as educational software and technology training for students and teachers.

Robbins Elementary received a $14,000 Partners in Education Grant from the IBM Hispanic Diversity Network. The grant provides notebook computers and an LCD projector to enhance the school's MentorPlace program, in which IBM employees work with students on technology-related activities.

The district purchased and installed new software that allows teachers to view students' screens while they work on assignments in school computer labs. Teachers can communicate with each individual student through headphones and take control of students' computers if they need help. The software also enables teachers to take snapshots of students' screens, which allows teachers to easily share the students' work with the class.

In March, the district partnered with Carthage Police and the County Sheriff's Office to build a wireless network, allowing first-responders to view school surveillance cameras wirelessly as they respond to 911 calls at Union Pines High School.

"The school district's dramatic climb in the state rankings is very impressive and shows the dedication and commitment the district has to helping students become better prepared for the future," says Dr. Larry Upchurch, Deputy Superintendent. "The technology is not only engaging students more in the classrooms, its helping them understand the material better and improving overall learning."

Rethinking Use of Cough Medications for Common Colds: New Cough Care Guidelines Reported by Johns Hopkins Health Alerts

Rethinking Use of Cough Medications for Common Colds: New Cough Care Guidelines Reported by Johns Hopkins Health Alerts

What should you take to soothe a bad cough? Johns Hopkins reports on the surprising new guidelines from The American College of Chest Physicians.

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 6, 2008

Here's some surprising news: The most effective medicines for a cough are NOT the ones which are being marketed as cough treatments.

In the latest Johns Hopkins Lung Disorders Health Alert (www. johnshopkinshealthalerts. com)], their pulmonary specialists summarize the kiy findings you need to know from the latest American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) comprehensive guidelines for treating various types of cough.

COUGH/COLDS THE #1 REASON FOR A VISIT TO THE DOCTOR
Cough is the number one reason people seek medical attention. The new ACCP guidelines state that many of the key ingredients in commonly taken over the counter cough and cold medications DO NOT effectively quiet coughs that are caused by the common cold.

The new ACCP guidelines stress that most over-the-counter cough expectorants or suppressants, including cough syrups and cough drops, just DON'T work.

Instead, certain older allergy and pain medicines are MORE EFFECTIVE for treating coughs, even though they are not advertised as cough busters.

A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF STUDIES ON COUGHS AND THE COMMON COLD
After reviewing studies done from 1980 to 2004 on cough and the common cold, an ACCP expert panel found that guaifenesin -- an expectorant found in such popular cough medicines as Robitussin and Mucinex -- is NOT effective in controlling cough caused by the common cold.

Guaifenesin is supposed to thin mucus and make it easier to cough up phlegm.

Of the four studies, which compared guaifenesin with a placebo, two showed that the cough medicine was effective, but two showed it was not.

The ACCP has concluded that this was NOT enough evidence to say that the drug is effective for treating coughs due to colds.

OTHER POSSIBLE COUGH AND COLD TREATMENTS?
Two other common cough treatments, dextromethorphan and codeine, also DID NOT pass muster for treating coughs caused by colds, according to the ACCP guidelines.

The experts found that the dose of dextromethorphan used in over-the-counter brands is ineffective. Even large doses of codeine didn't work.

SOME RELIEF FOR CHRONIC BRONCHITIS SUFFERERS
Although neither drug is effective for coughs from the common cold, both drugs may help people with chronic bronchitis get short-term relief from coughing, the panel noted.

OTHER POPULAR COLD TREATMENTS SCRUTINIZED
The ACCP has also found that the ever-popular zinc and echinacea were also ineffective for coughs due to colds.

SO WHAT DOES WORK FOR COUGHS?
The panel members didn't merely knock popular cough remedies off their pedestal. They did find some over-the-counter products that can help to calm coughs -- but not the ones you would expect.

Antihistamine/decongestant medications that contain brompheniramine and sustained-release pseudoephedrine can be effective, they found. These medications contain older antihistamines that can make you drowsy.

However, newer non-sedating antihistamines don't work for reducing cough, the panel concluded.

Another treatment to try is the pain reliever naproxen (Aleve), which the panel said has been shown to decrease the severity and frequency of coughing.

Bottled Water No Safer than Municipal Water

Bottled Water No Safer than Municipal Water

RainSoft, a worldwide manufacturer of water treatment systems, reacts to FDA's inability to assure safe, quality bottled water.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) July 15, 2009

RainSoft, a worldwide manufacturer of water treatment systems, reacts to FDA's inability to assure safe, quality bottled water.

Americans pay for bottled water because they think it is cleaner and healthier than municipal water. However, according to two studies released at a Congressional hearing Tuesday, the FDA does not require bottled water companies to disclose sources, use certified labs or report failures of water quality tests. The EPA mandates that public water systems regulate all of the above, and more. In response, FDA officials have requested legislation be passed to allow them more funding and authority in order to control bottled water safety.

"Homeowners, parents and particularly mothers can act now to add one more layer of security for their families drinking water," says Mark Vance, Chief Marketing Officer at RainSoft, a worldwide manufacturer of water treatment systems. "Our research shows that when people talk about water quality they most often are referring their drinking water. They are concerned but they don't know what to do about it other than buy bottled water. Now they are learning that even bottled water might not be safe."

Municipalities responsible for providing tap water have regulations that do not apply to bottled water providers, such as reporting unhealthy contaminants within 24 hours. Companies that produce bottled water, do not have to report any positive contamination tests.

"Area municipalities do a fine job providing water," says Vance. "And RainSoft products help to make this good tap water even better. Our products filter water to levels that no municipality could ever afford to deliver, due to their current budget cuts and limited infrastructure."

In addition to questions about quality, bottled water has long been criticized due to high levels of environmental waste. According to the National Association for PET Container Resources, only about a quarter of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles used for water and other products are recycled in the U. S.

Vance said, "For what the average American family spends on bottled water every year, they could easily pay for a RainSoft drinking water filtration system. Our products give homeowners 'peace of mind' by being environmentally friendly and economically wise."

DealPass Offers Consumers Six Easy Tips on How to Shop Online Safely

DealPass Offers Consumers Six Easy Tips on How to Shop Online Safely

DealPass, an online portal for Adaptive Marketing LLC programs, provides secure access to savings with nationally-acclaimed retailers and service providers

Stamford, CT (PRWEB) June 17, 2005

For millions of consumers, the Internet has become the ultimate shopping destination. The hours are great (24/7), you can leave the car in the driveway, and you donÂ’t have to wait in line for a price check. Instead, web-savvy consumers can cruise from one e-tailer to the next with a mere click of the mouse. And to make the online shopping experience even more convenient, bargain-seeking consumers are making DealPass (http://www. dealpass. com/) the first stop on their World Wide Web tour.

DealPass is an online portal for Adaptive Marketing LLCÂ’s membership programs, which provide discounts on a wide range of consumer interests, including healthcare, personal security, shopping, home care, travel, entertainment and more. Through DealPass (http://www. dealpass. com/), members can access their money-saving benefits with many of the nationÂ’s top retailers and service providers.

And as an added bonus, visitors to the site can shop worry-free, because DealPass has implemented rigorous security and customer protection policies. However, consumers should be aware that not all online retailers maintain such scrupulous standards.

Before you make another online purchase, be sure youÂ’re following these basic steps to ensure that your shopping experience is not only convenient, but safe:

Make sure your online transaction is secure. Reputable companies will encrypt your credit card information with security software, such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). During secure transactions, Netscape NavigatorTM and Microsoft Internet Explorer both display icons of a lock or padlock.

Tip: You can verify that your transaction is going through a secure server by checking the web page that’s requesting your credit card information - the web address should begin with “https” rather than “http.” The “s” stands for secure.

Know who the e-tailer is. Before shopping from an unfamiliar company, do your homework by checking trusted business sources. Another simple way to verify that the company is truly an established business is to ask whether they have a retail location or a catalog you can receive. If they are solely an online company, exercise greater caution.

Read the privacy, shipping and handling and refund policies. You should do this for every company you transact with, even if itÂ’s a well-known retailer. These policies will tell you how they may use or share information about you, and will explain your recourse if you wish to make a return or lodge a complaint. If you donÂ’t find these policies on their website, send them an email requesting it.

Keep a record of your transaction. Print out your order confirmation, the terms and conditions and even the description of your purchase. You should also know that unless a company states otherwise, they must ship your order within 30 days. If there are delays, they are required to notify you.

Approach online auctions with caution. You can find great bargains through online auctions. Before you bid, though, you need to make sure you know the rules and policies of the auction site as well as the sellerÂ’s terms for items that you wish to bid on, including warranties, the refund policy and shipping policy.

Kangen-water. ws: A New Website is Launched for People Interested in Physical and Financial Wellness

Kangen-water. ws: A New Website is Launched for People Interested in Physical and Financial Wellness

Kangen-water. ws: Learn how hydrating with the highest quality, anti-oxidant, alkaline water can benefit your health including weight management, energy, athletic performance and general well being.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) September 20, 2006

Kangen-water. ws is a new website with information, articles and resources about the power of water. The mission of Kangen-water. ws is to provide support for people who accept that they alone are responsible for their health and wellness.

Kangen-water. ws was founded in August, 2006 by San Francisco based Matt Canham. Inspired by his own experiences and those voiced by others, the site is a culmination of years of training and experience. According to Canham, "most people just accept that their health and chronological ages have to align, yet nothing could be farther from the truth. When you clear out the toxins from your body -- both physically and spiritually, you can start to become younger in every sense."

Kangen-water. ws will strive to provide relevant information and articles that will assist people from all over the world.

Kangen-water. ws is in its beginning stages and will only grow as more and more people become interested in alternative health. Canham says, "we are starting to see a real shift in thinking towards health. Many educated people these days are accepting that they and they alone are responsible for their health. The days of running your body down into illness then looking for a magic cure are over. It just doesn't work."

Gel Reduces Herpes Transmission Rate, MPwH. net Focuses On Reducing Stigma-Related Online Dating Issues For People Living With HSV and HPV

Gel Reduces Herpes Transmission Rate, MPwH. net Focuses On Reducing Stigma-Related Online Dating Issues For People Living With HSV and HPV

A recent clinical study showed reduced genital herpes transmission rates. That's promising news for people with herpes trying to date in the mainstream, but that product alone does not reduce or remove obstacles for people dating with herpes. Niche dating sites like MPwH. net are still popular because they are designed for people with herpes and HPV (the human papilloma virus).

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) July 28, 2010

An HIV study was completed in Africa recently which incidentally showed remarkable progress in reducing genital herpes transmission rates. The Microbicide Gel Study (http://www. caprisa. org/joomla/Micro/CAPRISA%20004%20Press%20Release%20for%2020%20July%202010.pdf) showed over a 50% reduction in transmission for people with Herpes.

Despite progress in treatment or preventing transmission, genital herpes can be a major limiting factor for people who wish to date online. Mainstream dating sites such as Match. com and eHarmony. com are intended to help people who are looking for a personal connection on the Internet. However, niche sites provide a more organic connection for people with specific issues or conditions. For example, JDate is a dating site for people of the Jewish faith, a place where they start out with that in common. In the same way, niche sites like MPwH. net are designed for people with herpes and HPV (the human papilloma virus).

Niche sites work because of personal and societal factors. The largest Herpes and HPV dating site, Meet People with Herpes/HPV (http://www. MPwH. net (http://www. MPwH. net)), has been on the Internet since 1997, and has provided dating and social services to the online herpes and HPV (human papilloma virus) community during that time. Even better, people with herpes can buy "lifetime" memberships to MPwH. net.

Even in a challenging economic and Internet environment, MPwH continues to be successful for a number of reasons:

First, people with herpes and/or HPV often isolate themselves from the mainstream dating community. MPwH provides an inclusive, informative, and supportive environment, whether the people joining are newly diagnosed, have had herpes or HPV for a while, or think of their STD as little more than a skin condition. By joining and participating within the MPwH community, members can communicate with people "just like them," who understand the emotions, fears and challenges that a herpes and HPV diagnosis can cause. On MPwH, members communicate one-to-one, in group chat, or on MPwH's Message Boards. The MPwH Message Boards are very active, with over 3 million posts since 2002; one of the highlights of the MPwH experience is the Message Board, which is available to upgraded members.

Second, people with herpes and HPV join MPwH because they consider dating "in the club" a more responsible choice. Herpes is usually not a dangerous STD, and the more serious health consequences of HPV can usually be treated with appropriate medical attention, but many people prefer not to take the chance that they'll pass a virus to a non-infected partner, even when the partner is told up front about the chance for infection and potential health issues. At MPwH, there's no need to have "the talk," the often emotionally painful discussion with a potential partner in which someone discloses a herpes or HPV infection.

Third, people join MPwH because it's designed to be private, and they don't have to take the chance that they'll inadvertently disclose their condition. There's a stigma attached to herpes and HPV that causes embarrassment and social problems for many people, and at MPwH, people don't have to worry about being "different" or inferior in any way. MPwH levels the playing field and makes a diagnosis of Herpes or HPV a non-issue in relation to meeting friends or dating.

It's nice to find a place without judgments. Maya Angelou once said "The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.” At niche sites like MPwH, everyone can be just as they are.

Dating within a niche site doesn't make someone better, smarter, or funnier. The niche itself isn't a compatibility factor; it's a qualifying or disqualifying factor. Herpes or HPV won't make you cuter or younger, but dating where it's not a factor will help to remove a potential obstacle. For many people, removing potential stumbling blocks can be a big benefit. Non-judgmental interactions with a lot of people in the same situation makes the choice of a niche site a very wise decision.

Anybody living with Herpes or HPV can find support, friendship, medical information, and dating opportunities by joining MPwH (Meet People with Herpes/HPV) the internet's oldest and most trusted Herpes and HPV social community found at MPwH (http://www. mpwh. net).

Back to the Future for Pain Management

Back to the Future for Pain Management

More and more pain sufferers are turning to traditional alternatives such as acupuncture, herbal medicine and meditation. In addition to pain relief, these alternatives are seen to provide general health benefits without serious side effects.

Sydney, Australia (PRWEB) July 13, 2004

More and more pain sufferers are turning to traditional alternatives such as acupuncture, herbal medicine and meditation. In addition to pain relief, these alternatives are seen to provide general health benefits without serious side effects. This article examines some of the popular treatment options.

The ancient Chinese Practice of acupuncture is based on the belief that health is determined by the level of chi (vital life energy) that is in the body. This energy is thought to move through the body through pathways called meridians, which connect to specific organs in the body. Acupuncturists insert needles into points on the body that connect to these channels to release blocked "chi" that might be the cause of pain. During treatment, the acupuncturist inserts thin needles for anywhere from a few minutes to a half an hour into specific points on the body. This practice is thought to stimulate endorphins, the body's natural painkillers and is useful for the treatment of a variety of disorders including backache, sinus pain, jaw pain, spinal disorders, withdrawal and mental disorders.

Also known as "contact healing", acupressure is based on the same principles as acupuncture, except hand-pressure and finger pressure is applied to specific points on the body to release neurotransmitters that alleviate pain.

Another aspect of traditional Chinese medicine is herbal medicine. Herbs have been used for centuries for their pain relieving qualities. Here are some herbs that are recommended for common disorders:

Cramps & Spasms: angelica, cramp bar, kava, rosemary. Nerve Pain: capsaicin, chamomile, gotu kola, licorice. Back Pain: hops, wood betony, passionflower. Migraine: feverfew, linden, skullcap. Headaches: peppermint, spearmint. Joint pain: ginger, sea cucumber.

Aromatherapy (sniffing or applying essential oils) is yet another popular option. Aromatherapy is thought to change an individual's brain chemistry so that pleasurable neuro-transmitters are released to relieve pain. Geranium, jasmine, juniper, lavender, peppermint, rose, rosemary and thyme are oils commonly used for this purpose.

Homeopathy, which has been popularized by the British Royal Family since Victorian times is based on the principle of "like repels like." The theory is that miniscule amounts of chemicals, irritants or elements that mimic or resemble the main ailment will send a large message to the brain to repel pain and discomfort.

Meditation, which has also been practiced for thousands of years, is a conscious attempt to calm the mind so that it is not cluttered with thoughts and anxieties that might be contributing to an unnecessary belief in the existence of pain. There are hundreds of different meditation techniques, but mostly they all into three categories: concentrative, mindful and transcendental meditation. During concentrative meditation, focusing on a single sound, object or one's breath, produces a tranquil mind that facilitates the production of pain-relieving endorphins. During mindful meditations, the mind is encouraged to become aware of, but not reactive to thoughts, feelings and sensations in order to achieve a tranquil state of mind. During transcendental meditation, the mind settles down to a state that transcends thought altogether.

Therapies that focus on the mind are becoming increasingly popular. Guided Imagery research has indicated that bodily functions that were previously thought to be beyond conscious control, such as chronic pain, can be controlled through the use of visualization. Guided imagery encourages the sufferer to think in pictures that eliminate negative thoughts thus raising levels of pleasurable brain chemicals, such as serotonin, decreasing anxiety and increasing the effectiveness of the immune system. Through guided imagery, the mind conjures up mental scenes in order to better direct the body's energy. For instance, if an individual is suffering from a stabbing pain, he or she might want to imagine a knife being removed from the spot and a subsequent glowing feeling of relief.

The current popularity of traditional treatments is likely to continue for some time. Even major pharmaceutical manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon by manufacturing such herbs as willow bark and feverfew and marketing them as natural alternatives to ibuprofen and aspirin.

It is important to note that the above suggestions do not represent cures for conditions, but more represent strategies and opportunities to manage your chronic pain. It is also recommended that you consult with your health practitioner before embarking on any new pain management program.

Before the necessary advent of the Computer Crimes Expo (C2Expo™, www. computercrimesexpo. com), corporate and business executives, government and law enforcement officials, Internet service providers (ISPs), educators and those charged with purchasing for consumer-oriented retailers had to search through trade show directories and exhibits to find what they really came to see,” said Brenda Beckelman, president of Savvy Solutions, producer of C2Expo.

Â“Now,” she said, “the Computer Crimes Expo will bring together at one time in one place the best of the best across all industry lines, uniting the technologies with the single focus of stemming and stopping the growing tide of computer-based crime.”

Grounding the Skyrocket That is Computer Crime

Just last month, Neal Katyal wrote in The New York Times that Computer Crime is skyrocketing, with one recent study finding that 90 percent of corporations surveyed have suffered a computer break-in during the last year. And as more private data is placed on computer networks, from health information to romantic e-mail messages, the non-economic harms from hackers will rapidly increase," said David A. Kaminer, co-founder and show director of C2Expo, and formerly the long-time spokesperson for COMDEX.

Â“Crimes committed on and with computers represents an international epidemic that continues to spiral out of control, he said. Now, the Computer Crimes Expo will provide a focus on this fiscal and physical problem and showcase products, solutions and experts which can help fight and conquer tech-based computer crime.

Comprehensive Computer-Crime Conference Program

The Computer Crimes Expo will offer a comprehensive Conference Program focusing on:

 -- Data Security, including state-of-the-art insights, methods and products which protect systems and data from intrusion, theft and/or corruption by Cyber thieves or viruses;

 -- E-Commerce, including insights, methods and products which make e-commerce safer, providing the knowledge and confidence to help the Internet fulfill its promise as a marketplace;

-- Illicit Internet Activity, including insights, methods and products which can protect children and teenagers from the vicious tide of pornography and predators who use the Internet, and

-- Overall Computer Safety, including insights, methods and products to protect our investment in desktop and mobile hardware, software and systems from theft or vandalism.

Hands-on Workshops will include: Stopping Hackers in their Tracks; Firewalls, Perimeter Protection and VPNs; Incident Handling Step-By-Step; Computer Crime Investigation, and Auditing Web-Based Applications.

Panel discussions Conference sessions will include: Crime and Data Security; e-Commerce; Illicit Internet Activity, including Protecting Children from Pedophiles; Overall Computer Safety; Cyberspace Law and Emerging Government Guidelines; Cyber Terrorism; Internet Gaming; Employee Crime; Network Intrusion, and Privacy Issues; Gray Areas in Computer Crime; CSI - The Desktop; Practicing Law in Cyberspace; Intellectual Property Issues Online; Internet Ethics; Safeguarding e-commerce; The Law vs. Viruses; White Collar Computer Crime; Defending Against Competitive Intelligence Gathering; Developing Anti-Crime Policies Against Intrusion Detection and Attacks, and Countermeasures; Securing Laptops and PDAs, and The Future of Computer Code Crime (Rat, Zombies, Crackers, Sniffers, Key Stroke Loggers, P2p Applications and Logic Bombs) and Securing Against Non-reproducing Hostile Code Trojans, Sniffers, Spyware and Keyboard Loggers.

Other topics covered in discussion groups and workshops include: Disaster Recovery and the Impact on Security; Child Pornography and Exploitation Online; Child Exploitation Investigations; Computer-based Stalking and Harassment; Electronic Evidence and Forensics; Computer Crime and Liability in School, and Smart and Credit Card Crime; Security in a Wireless World.

In addition, there will be a special focus area for Nevada companies and other areas where gaming is an increasingly important industry, covering Internet Gaming and Securing Gaming Transactions.

‘A Trade Show Floor Like None Other’

The Computer Crimes Expo will also offer a trade show floor like none other,@ said Show Director Kaminer. Business people, government officials, law enforcement leaders, ISPs, educators and buyers for retailers of computer crime-oriented products won=t have to search high and low. Everything on the trade show floor will be what they came to see, and everything they came to see will be on the trade show floor.

Initial interest from leaders in software, hardware and telecommunications has been very strong to the C2Expo message and focus, he said. We expect a very exciting trade show floor and an incredible Conference, particularly for a first time event.

Teen Use of Prescription and OTC Drugs on the Increase

Teen Use of Prescription and OTC Drugs on the Increase

Hospitals, doctors and anti-drug advocates are worried about a mounting trend: teenage abuse of prescription and common household medicines.

(PRWEB) October 16, 2004

As treatment providers we are concerned about the growing trend seen in teenagers of misusing common household medicines. This evidence is from reports by educators in high schools and middle schools and by doctors and nurses that staff our emergency rooms.

The problem is that an increasing number of young people are misusing, cold and cough suppressants, cough syrups, motion-sickness drugs and over-the-counter pain medications to get a high. Often these medications used in conjunction with high caffeinated drinks.

”This is clearly a problem that affects teens in urban and suburban areas and will be the next critical area of substance abuse in our communities, “said Michael Nanko, Ph. D. at the Thelma McMillen Center for Chemical Dependency Treatment in Torrance, California and Chief Operating Officer for American Health Management. "We have been tackling teen abuse of crack, meth, marijuana and alcohol but we are now confronted with the rapidly growing use of prescription drug or over-the-counter drugs. Some young people are using all the above. Whatever they can get their hands on at the moment. Many teens are securing the prescription medications at home and we see a rising use of Vicodin, Norco, Oxycontin, Xanax, valium and even inappropriate use of antidepressants – anything to get a buzz.”

According to the 2003 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the number of teens calling poison-control centers nationwide about cough medicine misuse has doubled in four years. In addition, the abuse of prescription drugs by teens was second only to marijuana use

"School counselors and drug counselors are working hard to identify this problem in their students but this is difficult to detect and may not stand out like purchasing and using pot. There is almost an aura of legitimacy to the misuse of prescription and OTC meds because they are licit medications. It just makes the counselors and parents’ job all that more difficult, “reports Nanko

Treatment Centers like the Thelma McMillen Center are bringing this issue directly to the school and parent groups. School officials, parents, police, fire departments and emergency rooms are all seeing the effects and hopefully community interventions will begin throughout this country to stem this ever growing problem.

School officials and health officials are equally concerned that more teenagers are using prescription stimulants and some are mixing stimulants like Ritalin with inhalants like correction fluid and room deodorizers. This drug combination can be a killer as it can disturb heart rhythm.

The Torrance Memorial Medical Centers' Thelma McMillen Center can be reached at (310) 784-4879.

Looking for Love? The Answer May be in Your Dreams!

Looking for Love? The Answer May be in Your Dreams!

Psychics team up to create interactive computer multimedia program that helps people build and realize their dreams, even dreams of love.

BOSTON (PRWEB) February 8, 2006

Valentine's Day inspires many to thoughts of love, re-kindling love, or looking for that new love, that perfect someone. People connect, and things may or may not work out. They seek advice from many sources, but most overlook a prime source of advice that is available every day and costs nothing -- their dreams.

People have looked to dreams for guidance for centuries. The story of Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors from the Bible is a prime example. The inventor, Thomas Edison, took "cat naps" to access his dreams and generate ideas.

ClydeSight Productions, in association with Psychic View Points Entertainment has released a new interactive multimedia program-- the "Dream Angel Oracle" -- that can help people looking for love-- or seeking to build any dream-- achieve success.

It's a self contained FLASH projector presentation that runs on the desktop. It is similar to electronic Tarot cards but goes deeper by using a multi-level interactive response system. The advice dispensed is spiritual and supportive, focusing on the aspects of a person's life to give them the guidance that they need.

"Dream Angels" are the internal guides that all people have available to them. The program helps users get in touch with their personal Dream Angels to draw wisdom and guidance from within themselves, much as intuition provides guidance and direction.

Users engage in "conversations" with the Dream Angels by typing a comment or question, and receiving a response. They can continue the conversation, much as one would do with a counselor. The program goes further by providing the ability to confer with 1, 3 or 5 Dream Angels simultaneously. When in the 3 and 5 Angel Conversation mode, users are in a conference, where the Angels respond individually to the comment or question asked. The program is augmented with an original musical soundtrack that enhances introspection through aural stimulation.

The response or advice from the Angels often involves direct dream work—keeping a dream book, programming dreams and what to focus on. Sometimes, the connection between this advice and the question is very profound. One program user commented "I asked about finding a date and was told to check my health. I didn't see the connection until I realized that when I am healthy, I am more attractive to others!"

Beacon Street Girls Shred the Telluride Slopes in Freestyle with Avery

Beacon Street Girls Shred the Telluride Slopes in Freestyle with Avery

Freestyle with Avery, the newest Beacon Street Girls Special Adventure book, has everyone's favorite preteen athlete negotiating family changes, turning a shy boy into a new friend, and racing down snowy peaks -- with both feet strapped to a board. She also gets to meet real-life snowboarding champion and Olympic silver medalist, Lindsey Jacobellis.

Lexington, MA (PRWEB) October 23, 2007

Competition soars on the half-pipe when Beacon Street Girl Avery Madden travels to the scenic Telluride Ski Resort in Colorado to visit her father and compete in the first-ever "Snurfer" snowboarding contest. But it's not all fun and snowball games, especially when Avery meets top Snurfer contender Crazie Kazie, a local snowboarding prodigy. Wipeout! Kazie's also the daughter of Avery's dad's new girlfriend.

Freestyle with Avery, the newest Beacon Street Girls Special Adventure, has everyone's favorite preteen athlete negotiating family changes, turning a shy boy into a new friend, and racing down snowy peaks -- with both feet strapped to a board. She also gets to meet real-life snowboarding champion and Olympic silver medalist, Lindsey Jacobellis.

"I love Avery's snowboarding adventure and how it realistically addresses the hard work and dedication necessary to become a champion," said Jacobellis. "I think today's girls can accomplish anything and the Beacon Street Girls show them how it's done."

"The Beacon Street Girls Special Adventure books offers us the platform to show girls doing whatever they want to do and being whomever they want to be," said Addie Swartz, CEO of B*tween Productions, home of the Beacon Street Girls. "The BSG Special Adventures are also a chance for our tween readers to explore places they've never been."

When exuberant, out-going Avery leaves behind the rest of the Beacon Street Girls to go out West, she befriends the cutest (and shyest) boy in town. Meanwhile, she's battling Kazie for both the Snurfer Snowboarding title and what feels like her father's affection.

"A large percentage of divorced parents date and eventually remarry, a process that can have a significant impact on a child," says Swartz. "In this book, Avery's reaction to her father's new relationship includes jealousy, hurt and guilt -- responses typical for a tween girl in this situation."

Beacon Street Girls Special Adventure books focus on a special experience and help BSG fans get to know even more about the individual characters, one of five 12 year-old girls who star in the book series and website. Girls love to read about the "just like me" characters and parents appreciate the age-appropriate content with positive values.

Freestyle with Avery is available immediately wherever books are sold. ISBN: 978-1-933566-01-6 $7.99

Two Years in Business for Diane's Minimall

Two Years in Business for Diane's Minimall

Online variety store ShopToEarn. net/DianesPlace Celebrates the beginning of a third year in business, adding new products and opening a new informational blog.

Lantana, FL (PRWEB) September 18, 2008

When Diane Robinson opened www. ShopToEarn. net/DianesPlace (http://www. ShopToEarn. net/DianesPlace) in 2006, it was her goal to provide 'something for everyone'. Two years later she is celebrating the second anniversary of her store, and growing ever closer to providing a catalog of merchandise that appeals to all audiences.

"There are miscellaneous items for computers and electronics, and paper to print photos on -- everyone has a digital camera these days, and photo paper is well-used," says Diane, describing some of the items that can be found in her store as of the last year. "What I'm most excited about is our selection of diamond rings without a center stone; when I got married, I replaced my center stone, and it was much more beautiful. With these, you can buy a beautiful wedding ring and go out and choose your own stone to truly make it yours -- your own forever ring. It's such a great variety of items."

In recent history Diane has updated her catalog by using her family as her target market. "My daughter is an aerobics instructor, and she loves camo, so there are camo pants on the site," says Diane. "I found camo pants that are very comfortable and affordable. My husband and grandson play Playstation, and they love to race cars, so Gran Turismo IV is on there. There's also a bow saw in the catalog, which was my choice. I live in Florida, and I'm always looking for something lightweight to help trim our plants, as they grow very quickly and need to be pruned constantly. My bow saw is very handy, so I offer the same saw to my customers."

Of late, Diane has opened an informational blog at www. OnlineMallBlog. com to help provide her customers with information about her site and products as well as general news. "I try to focus on current events, what's going on in the world," she explains. "Sometimes people get sentimental and things will jog a memory for them, and it's always fun to hear how they used to do this or use something like this and it brought back a memory just seeing it again. I love to hear feedback and comments. I also provide information about new products, like our Inchloss body wraps, which I've posted about because I use them and they're a quality product. I'm trying to get some more health items on there, and I'm giving people information about them as I do."

Diane's overall goal has not changed, however -- to provide something for everyone on her site. "I am a massage therapist, and I am into health and comfort," she explains. "I don't believe we should live so uptight. We are put on this Earth, given a body, and we need to take care of that body and also relax. The suit and tie thing is restrictive, and while a lot of people get involved in that, life is much more than a suit and tie. Most of the things that I have or do or enjoy are not confined; they're a little bit more free and open. I'm just trying to pass that along through my store."

Diane encourages customers to visit www. OnlineMallBlog. com and exchange thoughts with her and others, and to visit ShopToEarn. net/DianesPlace to view new additions to the store.

Research and Markets: Japan Server Market Showed Year-on-Year Decrease of 1.9% to 366.06 Billion Yen

Research and Markets (researchandmarkets. com/reports/c15687) has announced the addition of Japan Server 2004-2008 Forecast Update and 1H04 Vendor Shares: 2004 Midyear Review to their offering.

(PRWEB) April 15, 2005

Research and Markets (http://www. researchandmarkets. com/reports/c15687 (http://www. researchandmarkets. com/reports/c15687)) has announced the addition of Japan Server 2004-2008 Forecast Update and 1H04 Vendor Shares: 2004 Midyear Review to their offering.

This study analyzes the shipments of the Japanese server market in 1H04 (January-June) and forecasts the market size between 2004 and 2008. The factory revenue of the server market in 1H04 showed year-on-year decrease of 1.9% to 366.06 billion yen. Although this is the seventh straight decline, the growth rate is recovering after hitting the bottom in 1H03. The shipments grew by 15.0% to 243,439 units and achieved two-digit growth for two consecutive periods. The shipments showed year-on-year growth in all product segments.

"The server demand is clearly improving, and that the demand for replacement of RISC server and mainframe has recovered in 1H04. On the other hand, the decrease in the average selling value of x86 server accelerated. The x86 server market maintains healthy growth in terms of shipments, but its factory revenue was sluggish. Based on these factors, we revised the market forecast for 2004 upward. The server market in 2004 will show year-on-year decrease of 2.8% in factory revenue to 699.373 billion yen. The shipments are expected to increase by 14.1%," observes Masahiro Nakamura, research manager.

Smartphones to Account for 23% of All New Mobile Phones by 2013, as Application Stores Help Drive Demand, According to Juniper Research

Smartphones to Account for 23% of All New Mobile Phones by 2013, as Application Stores Help Drive Demand, According to Juniper Research

Rising demand for complex multimedia-centric applications is forcing handset manufacturers to design increasingly 'smart' and highly personalised mobile devices.

Hampshire, UK (PRWEB) March 9, 2009

Rising demand for complex multimedia-centric applications is forcing handset manufacturers to design increasingly 'smart' and highly personalised mobile devices.

A new smartphones report (http://www. juniperresearch. com/shop/viewreport. php? id=171) from Juniper Research forecasts that these so-called 'smartphones' will account for 23% of all new handsets sold per annum by 2013. Driving interest in smartphones will be the proliferation of online stores selling specialised applications that will make these devices better suited to individual users' needs.

Vendors Adopt Apps Store Model

The runaway success of Apple's App Store - reportedly 300 million applications were downloaded by iPhone users within five months of its launch - underscores the rapidity with which smartphones are being adopted by ordinary consumers, eager to build a complete multi-utility lifestyle tool rooted in the Web 2.0 culture. The App Store was not the first on the market, but its high visibility and ease of use has prompted players such as Nokia, RIM, and Google also to jump into the applications market.

According to report author Andrew Kitson: "As vendors increasingly open up the operating system software on their devices, so will the rate at which mobile handsets evolve into personalised Internet-centric mobile computers gather momentum. In this way, users are having an indirect impact on the way in which devices are changing their form and function as well as how they interact with their surroundings. Very soon, the majority of new phones will be smartphones."

Other findings include:
By 2013, annual smartphone sales will reach around 300 million  Sales of smartphones will remain healthy during the recession as fewer mid-range devices compete for buyers' attentions and pricing becomes more attractive, while consumers will come to believe that they will be getting more for their money by buying high-end devices  Device vendors are seeing falling margins on handset sales and need to diversify into service provision with high-value content from which they and their network operator partners can profit
