Flextime employees are able to select personalized working hours, often differing from the typical 8 -5 schedule. As an increasing portion of America's employers and employees are realizing flextime's benefits, the alternative work schedule is gaining popularity.

National Work and Family Month celebrates flexible work schedules that give working parents the time to fulfill their children's needs while still maintaining their own professional obligations. Caregivers can coordinate children's daycare, doctor's appointments, and other extracurricular activities with their own work schedules. "At Needlestack Jobs, we celebrate flextime this month and every month because it allows parents to achieve optimum work-family balance, while maintaining their professional status, their potential for advancement and their income," explains Needlestack Jobs Vice President of Business Development Kathleen Wiant.

This type of flexible work schedule (http://www. needlestackjobs. com/News. asp) also benefits Baby Boomers. Nearly 25% of America's entire workforce will be reaching retirement age in the next ten years. These Baby Boomers are healthy, active, and well educated. Baby Boomers' longevity gives them the opportunity to continue pursuing their passions and working past retirement. Employers do not want to lose this valuable workforce and are finding that flextime is a great way to accommodate these changing needs.

New Online Database Helps Choose the Right Palm for Any Garden

New Online Database Helps Choose the Right Palm for Any Garden

Adding the right palm will increase aesthetic and property value while planting the wrong palm can be a very expensive lesson. AQualityPlant. com has launched a free website with a comprehensive plant guide.

Ruskin, FL (PRWEB) February 12, 2010

Adding the right palm will increase aesthetic and property value while planting the wrong palm can be a very expensive lesson. AQualityPlant. com has launched a free website with a comprehensive plant guide.

Palms are a beautiful natural symbol of the tropics and a favorite addition to private and public landscapes around the globe. To make the best decision also consider size, growth rate, cold hardiness, watering requirements, maintenance, salt tolerance and light requirements.

Palms come in sizes that range from just a few feet tall, like the Bamboo Cane Palm (Chamaedorea elegans) or nearly two hundred feet tall, like the Wax Palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense). Some will max out at only a couple feet wide while others can grow to over fifty feet wide. It is important to know the mature size of a palm before making a selection.

Palms also grow at different rates that are influenced by natures design, growing conditions and the care given by their owner. Tropical palms grow faster than those from desert or temperate regions. Palms like the Medjool Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera) grow fastest in a desert climate where daily temperatures well over 100 degrees will suit them just fine. Windmill Palms (Trachycarpus fortunii) prefer a Mediterranean climate and can even tolerate temperatures near zero degrees Fahrenheit.

Buyers often forget to check a palm’s cold hardiness until it's too late like during a major cold event. there are several varieties of cold hardy palms that can endure freezing temperatures for many hours. Some cold hardy palms can even withstand snow and sub-zero (F) temperatures. Popular choices include the Pindo Palm (Butia capitata), the Windmill Palm (Trachycarpus fortunii), the European Fan Palm (Chamaerhopps humilis) and the Medjool Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera).

The watering requirements for palms can vary greatly. Palms planted in fast draining sandy soil will require more frequent watering than those grown in clay based soils. Be sure to account for average rainfall amounts and watering restrictions during the selection process.

Climate compatibility is less of a concern when native palms are used. These palms have garnered recent attention and are highly recommended in most municipalities. Many home owners have jumped on the bandwagon by choosing native palms for their landscapes. In Florida, palms like the Florida Sabal Palm (Sabal palmetto), the Thatch Palm (Thrinax radiata) and the Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) have grown significantly in popularity.

Contrary to popular belief, not all palms can tolerate full sun. Some even require full shade. Most common landscaping palms tend to be the full sun varieties like the Washington Palm (Washingtonia robusta), the Queen Palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana), the Bismark Palm (Bismarkia nobilis) and the Pigmy Date Palm (Phoenix roebelenii). Common shade loving palms include the Bamboo Cane Palms (Chamaedoria Species), Dwarf Sugar Palm (Arenga engleri) and the Fishtail Palm (Caryota mitis).

Salt tolerance of palms is an important consideration for landscapes adjacent to bays, gulfs or oceans. Salt spray can damage foliage while salt water flooding can contaminate soil for years. Storm surges in the Florida Keys made this apparent to many homeowners and municipalities. After having their roots submerged for hours, many palms, including native species, suffered. One palm that did surprisingly well was not native at all. The Medjool Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera) was among the least damaged by the salt intrusion into the soil. It was noted by residents and has become a welcome addition to many landscapes in the keys.

Some palms can have unintended consequences for their owners. Palms with large seeds like the Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera) should not be planted where the falling coconuts can cause damage like over a driveway or walkway. Similarly, palms with extra large fronds planted close to your house could result in damage to the roof or gutters when they fall from great heights or get blown about in heavy winds. Consider that the fronds on Royal Palms (Roystonea regia) can way fifty pounds or more on taller specimens.

AQualityPlant. com has a free database that consumers can use to review all of the characteristics of hundreds of palm species from the comfort of their keyboard. Most have pictures and detailed descriptions to make the selection process foolproof. It’s a great place to start when deciding on a new palm.

Some maintenance will be required to preserve an attractive and healthy palm once it has been established in the new landscape. The maintenance plan should always include a trimming and fertilization schedule. Trimming should be done on brown or yellowed foliage. Trimming green fronds in an attempt to save time can prevent a palm from achieving adequate photosynthesis which can deter growth and fruiting. Some palms like the Royal Palm (Roystonea regia) and the Foxtail Palm (Wodyetia bifurcata) are self cleaning. They don't require pruning. The fronds will brown and then fall to the ground within a week or two. Unfortunately for those in subtropical and temperate climates, self cleaning palms are not cold hardy.

A palm fertilizer that includes a micro-nutrient package of boron, iron, manganese, magnesium, zinc and copper should be applied a minimum of twice per year. Once in the spring and once in the fall is sufficient. These micro nutrients are necessary for palms to grow healthy and strong. Fertilizing a third or even forth time will push rapid growth. This is common practice in the nursery trade to grow a sell-able plant faster. These micro nutrients are necessary for palms to grow healthy and strong.

Choosing the right palm is easy when all the factors are carefully considered. Regardless on the unique landscaping circumstances, among the hundreds of palm species there are certainly several beautiful choices that will be a perfect fit.

Disaster Readiness Made Easy

Disaster Readiness Made Easy

Consumers interested in being ready for a natural disaster or emergency will find help in the form of a new video and tip sheet from motivational speaker and cookbook author, Lisa A. Lundy, which you can download free from her website.

Buffalo, NY (Vocus) July 17, 2009

Nearly half the people in the U. S. (47%) believe they will personally experience a major disaster such as a terror attack or a catastrophic weather emergency within the next five years, yet despite that fact only one-third (34%) of Americans have started preparing or are prepared for a major disaster according to The American Preparedness Project completed in 2007 by Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and The Children's Health Fund. According to the 2009 World Disasters Report, more people in the Americas were affected by disaster than any year in the previous decade. Consumers interested in getting prepared can find help from a new short video (http://www. youtube. com/watch? v=Ht7rDg87_jA) and downloadable tip sheet from http://www. TheSuperAllergyCookbook. com (http://www. TheSuperAllergyCookbook. com) offered by motivational speaker and Allergy & Celiac Cookbook author, Lisa A. Lundy.

One group advocating that U. S. consumers be prepared is the American Red Cross, a charitable organization - not a government agency that shelters, feeds and counsels victims of disasters. The American Red Cross provides a variety of Fast Facts that you can download from their website, http://www. RedCross. org (http://www. RedCross. org), on power outages, chemical emergencies, drought, earthquakes, fires, floods, heat waves, hurricanes, mudslides, pandemic flu, pet safety, terrorism, tornadoes, thunderstorms, wildfires, and more. Funding and manpower for this valuable organization comes from the generosity of the American public and volunteers. In addition to natural disasters, this year consumers have the issue of the H1N1 flu to be concerned with as well as the traditional flu.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency or FEMA is part of the U. S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as of March 1, 2003. FEMA's primary mission is to reduce the loss of life and property and protect the Nation from all hazards, including natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other man-made disasters.

FEMA offers an in-depth guide to citizen preparedness titled 'Are You Ready?' (IS-22), which is their most comprehensive source on individual, family and community preparedness. 'Are You Ready' is available in a Facilitator Guide (IS-22FG) for those interested in delivering the content of 'Are You Ready' in a small group or classroom setting. Copies of both of these publications are available through the FEMA publications warehouse (1.800.480.2520).

Lundy recommends those families with infants and children, the elderly, people with food allergies, celiac disease or gluten intolerance, or special food needs and individuals with health issues to follow the advice of The American Red Cross and FEMA and get an emergency kit together. "Putting together an emergency kit can be fun and exciting. It does not have to be a chore," said Lundy who has had an extensive emergency kit for about nine years and who believes in having fun in life. "You can find all the information you need to be safe and make up a kit FREE from the American Red Cross or FEMA websites, " Lundy added.

As the author of The Super Allergy Girl™ Allergy & Celiac Cookbook, a gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, peanut-free and tree nut and other allergen free cookbook, Lundy knows that when disasters hit people with food allergies, food intolerances, or celiac disease are on their own. She feels so strongly about this topic that she mentioned it in her cookbook. Her book is available at http://www. TheSuperAllergyCookbook. com (http://www. TheSuperAllergyCookbook. com).

Lemington Home for the Aged d/b/a Lemington Center the oldest continuously operated African American sponsored long term care organization for the elderly in the United States. At risk of closing!

The elderly they serve are the poorest of poor and are dependent on Medical Assistance, which is the state welfare program. Most African American elderly over the age of 70 lack the retirement incomes to pay privately for supportive services which assist them to maintain independence. Just 40 years ago the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed, therefore a 70 year old today was 30 in 1964. Many were not permitted to work in jobs that offered retirement benefits until late in their adult lives.

(PRWEB) June 26, 2004

Ms. Mel L. Causey is the administrator for Lemington Home for the Aged d/b/a Lemington Center the oldest continuously operated African American sponsored long term care organization for the elderly in the United States. Founded by an African American female, Mary Peck Bond in 1877 and incorporated in 1883, Lemington has faithfully served African American elderly in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania community for more than 127 years! A 501 c3 organization, they operate a 120 bed nursing home in a building that was ill constructed in 1983. Their nursing home is in desperate need of your help!

The administrator shares this story because their facility is in financial distress! In general, the elderly they serve are the poorest of poor and are dependent on Medical Assistance, which is the state welfare program. The services and programs of this historic organization are largely funded by federal, state and local subsidized programs. This is significant because most African American elderly over the age of 70 lack the retirement incomes to pay privately for supportive services which assist them to maintain independence. Just 40 years ago the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed, therefore a 70 year old today was 30 in 1964. Many were not permitted to work in jobs that offered retirement benefits until late in their adult lives. Many have monthly incomes of $1000 to $1600 a month and women are most negatively impacted. The average monthly cost for an individual in a nursing home in Pennsylvania today is $5,500. With that in mind, today and for the next 20 to 30 years as these individuals age this country will have a significant percentage of African American elderly whom are and will be dependent on subsidized programs. African American elderly deserve quality services, accommodations and programs that are reflective of their culture. Their financial situations were created as a result of Jim Crow laws and civil rights discriminations not as a result of a lack of initiative.

In 2003 the Lemington Home provided $680,541 in charitable care. Charitable care is the difference between what the Medical Assistance program paid us to serve this population and what it actually cost us to care for them. The United Way of Allegheny County contributed $206,970 to support charitable care and the Pittsburgh Foundation contributed $121,051 from an endowment held in the homes name. The remaining 352,520 was unfunded charitable care. This kind of loss has been incurred annually and the organization has endured the unfunded amount by not fully funding depreciation. If an organization does not fully fund depreciation then there are minimum funds available for capital repairs and replacement. A 21 year old building requires ongoing repairs and replacements.

Currently African American nursing homes through out the country are at risk and many of them have closed! We want to communicate the financial challenges of this organization so as to prevent the closing of the oldest African American sponsored nursing home in the country!

They have many positive things going for them. Their facility sets on 12 acres of land. We have a satellite office of the University of Pittsburgh, Center for Minority Health, office located on our campus. The first of its kind in the country! They have an 80 unit Housing and Urban Development funded independent living facility on the campus and recently were awarded a grant to construct an additional 44 unit building. They also have a growing community services agency that operates a senior center and soon a southern style home delivered meals program. On February 16, 2004, they opened a 32 unit Assisted Living facility in the building that occupies our nursing home. When this occurred the organization became the first African American sponsored long term care organization in the country to have four levels of care and serves for the elderly on one campus, a continuum of care. This is significant, because currently there are no retirement communities in this country that celebrate the African American culture!

All this is an accomplishment, with little resources, but the nursing home portion of this historic organization is at risk! The Board of Directors and Administrative staff members are doing everything possible to reduce cost and secure additional funding. Please they need your help!

There story needs to be told! Please help them by Calling or writing the President, Senators, Congressmen, Jesse Jackson, actors, entertainers business executives, athletes and community organizations! The black community needs to accept responsibility and support this unique organization. Their Organization is a model that can and should be available in every major city. The Jewish community has successfully done this and we can do this as well. As the word says, "I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread" Psalms 37:25

Feel free to contact the organization for additional information, at 412-441-3700 or email your qiestions to mcausey@aol. com. Or check out their web site at www. lemington. org

In the wake of Vioxx's withdrawal and strong warning labels on all NSAIDs, health conscious consumers are looking for safer alternative anti-inflammatory products. Latest natural remedies for inflammation relief are now available at Amazon. com.

Garnet Valley, PA (PRWEB) December 2, 2008

In the wake of Vioxx's withdrawal and strong warning labels on all NSAIDs, health conscious consumers are looking for safer alternative anti-inflammatory products. Latest natural remedies for inflammation relief are now available at Amazon. com.

Chronic inflammation affects millions of Americans who suffer from arthritis, heart attack, type 2 diabetes, cancer, depression and Alzheimer's. Supported by advanced research and clinical evidence, control of chronic inflammation offers more than symptom relief, it is vital in slowing down disease progression (http://www. FlameEz. com (http://www. FlameEz. com)).

Inflammation is a normal response of the body to protect tissues from infection, injury or disease. Problems begin when the inflammation persists and becomes chronic. There are many reasons why inflammation continues. Sometimes the problem is a genetic predisposition; other times something like smoking, high fat diet, or high blood pressure keeps the process going. Accumulating evidence suggests that chronic inflammation can seriously damage host tissues and cause a wide range of diseases such as arthritis, heart disease (http://www. flameez. com/heart_disease), type 2 diabetes (http://www. flameez. com/diabetes), cancer (http://www. flameez. com/cancer), Alzheimer's (http://www. flameez. com/alzheimers), depression (http://www. flameez. com/depression), and osteoporosis.

For decades, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been used to treat chronic inflammation and inflammation related conditions. At high dose, NSAIDs reduce inflammation by inhibiting the activity of cyclooxygenease-1 (COX-1) and COX-2. Inhibition of COX-1, the enzyme that protects the stomach lining, causes stomach ulcers in 25% of NSAIDs users. Each year, half million Americans develop complications from NSAIDs, with an estimated 103,000 patients requiring hospitalization and 16,500 deaths.

The newer NSAIDs, selective COX-2 inhibitors, have showed little progress in reducing gastrointestinal adverse drug reactions. Moreover, society was dramatically shaken by the withdrawal from the marketplace of multibillion-dollar COX-2 inhibitor Vioxx due to increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Since then, the FDA has required strong warning labels on all NSAIDs.

To fight inflammation without the side effects of NSAIDs, health conscious consumers and medical professionals are seeking for safer alternative anti-inflammatory products. FlameEz™ products are the latest natural inflammation remedies to enter the marketplace. FlameEz™ remedies are developed by Innovative Drug Discovery Inc (IDD) and manufactured in the United States by a GMP certified facility. "Different from existing inflammation remedies, FlameEz™ products customize inflammation relief in a wide range of health conditions." says Dr. Yi Shi, Chief Executive Officer of Innovative Drug Discovery. "By using validated natural ingredients in a proprietary combination, FlameEz™ remedies are set to deliver optimum levels of performance in safety and potency." For detailed information on FlameEz™ products, please visit: http://www. FlameEz. com (http://www. FlameEz. com)

About Innovative Drug Discovery Inc.:

The Land of Advertising is Full of Surprises

The Land of Advertising is Full of Surprises.

Adland, the advertising site with 13 million visits, 35.000 members, and over 17.000 advertising commercials is the largest and oldest site of it's kind, yet it is not financed by advertising.

(PRWEB) September 22, 2004

Over the last few years, one of the more favorite subjects of business news has been how people eschew advertising by switching channels during commercial breaks or programming TiVos to avoid them completely, defacing billboards, canceling subscriptions, complaining up the wazoo, and getting offended over things as simple and silly as hat-wearing monkeys singing about delicious hoagies.

Sure, it's always easy for news outlets to find people who will rant and rave about the evils and destructive powers of ads, guaranteeing them their fifteen second soundbites of fame, but there's another side to the story.

Sometimes, and it's more often than you think, people find that the commercials are more interesting than the programs they interrupt, magazine ads are more compelling than the articles they surround, and publicity stunts are more engaging than what's playing at the local multiplex.

Even more surprising, and contrary to what the mainstream says everybody is doing, some people actually seek out advertising and their quest is rewarded at an irreverent but devastatingly substantial destination called AdLand at ad-rag. com, "a commercial-laden delirium of heaven and hell for advertising addicts 'round the world."

AdLand, with millions of visits, tens of thousands of members (or "AdGrunts", as its citizens like to call themselves), and over 17,000 online television commercials, is the largest and oldest site of its kind.

The site also has an acclaimed Super Bowl TV ad collection called the Claymore Project that spans over three historic decades of the annual phenomenon. "No other site has such a complete archive of Super Bowl ads, and every year after the game, we get hit so hard by visitors that our web servers are in constant danger of bursting into flames," says Åsk Wäppling, AdLand founder.

Long before the fire extinguishers, Adland at ad-rag. com was founded by Åsk Wäppling in 1996. Her initial idea was to build a simple little community where one could write about and discuss advertising, but her then humble website quickly grew into an enormous advertising resource frequented not only by ad industry professionals, professors, teachers and students, but also a shocking amount of armchair advertising aficionados and critics.

The site is run in most part by two infamous ad pundits, Åsk Wäppling and Clayton T. Claymore. "I still burn for advertising," says Wäppling. The members of the site can read and write gossip about the ad biz, and also watch and rate commercials. Many of the community members also make sure that the newsflow never stops, as any member can add news to the front page. For advertising news, Adland has become one of the most important ad resources next to traditional and local trade press.

"We also encourage agencies, directors and production houses to send in their current and older work for AdLand's archive, but it comes with a caveat," says Claymore. "If their spots stink, we're going to call them on it. And if their spots don't stink, well, then they have nothing but good things to worry about. To paraphrase the Facts of Life theme song, you take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have... advertising. Ok, that sounded better in my head than out loud, but there's no other industry like it, and we love it that way."

Perhaps in its most surprising twist yet, AdLand is one of the few websites of its size and scope that isn't supported by paid online advertisements. "No banner ads, no pop-up ads, no Flash-based web-o-matic-mercials, no paid-for-pseudo-stories or anything else our online marketing cousins can come up with," says Wäppling. "There's millions of other sites out there with that stuff, and we don't play that way."

"We're a pay-for-play site," continues Wäppling. "It's a different route, but if a member donates some of their pocket change to the site, they should not have to see banners or fill in long-winded forms about their income and sexual preferences. Now that many sites have paid links, even in their editorial content, AdLand is doing the opposite. There has never been any paid ad-space on the site and our vision is that there never will be. It's a little ironic considering the site's topic..."

"Ironic is an understatement...well, actually, it's an adjective. It's perplexing to some, but we want to keep things as pure, unadulterated and real as we can," says Claymore. "AdLand is a resource. A virtual salon of advertising opinion and commentary. A modern online museum of the best and worst of the advertising world. Of course, all that noble stuff doesn't stop us from being unabashed smart-arses whenever we find the opportunity."

Becoming a member to AdLand is free. News, links and plenty of other material is free as well, but if you wish to dive into the online commercial archive, a member only has to donate a small sum to help pay for the bandwidth - Two Euros for 30 days unlimited access. "It's not a subscription that one has to cancel, you simply upgrade the time you want to access the archive," says Wäppling.

"Think of it as an incredibly cheap month-long pass to your local zoo," concludes Claymore. "You get to go see the animals any time you want, and we can then afford just enough kibble to keep the animals alive and healthy."

Some people claim that ads are mirrors to the society they're found in. If this is true, then the folks at AdLand are doing their cheeky best to make sure that the mirrors never break.

New shiatsu courses, classes, training and timetables from London's home of Zen Shiatsu.

Master of the Zen School Kris Deva North explains the change from the Chinese New Year to the Western Academic Year.

"We offer continuous enrolment at the Zen School of Shiatsu, which means students can join any time of the year to begin their individual shiatsu training cycle.

"For many years we held to the traditional oriental cycle of seasons but found that most student enquiries coincide with the end or beginning of the academic year. This is simply because it is what they expect, and what they are accustomed to.

"Offering a New-Year oriented prospectus meant that when a potential student made their enquiry in August or September, we were sending out a prospectus with only three or four months shelf-life.

"It makes no difference to us as our courses are ongoing cycles. The customer - in our case the student - must come first. After all, we promote student-centres learning, why not a student-centered brochure release? Many of our students are from overseas. We need to adapt to their needs and expectations.

"So we changed. It makes sense, and fits the Zen tradition of flexibility, open-mindedness and freedom from restrictions of dogma. Just like our shiatsu!"

Kris and the tutor team at the Zen School are confident the extra investment in producing their prospectus early will be appreciated by potential students.

New design, clear layout and easy-to-access shiatsu and taoist training information, a web page with links to courses, teachers and shiatsu therapists, makes this tops among the flood of new brochures hitting the alternative and complementary health market in the run up to the new academic year.

Drunk Driving Carries Frightening Consequences, Washington Attorney Reminds Halloween Party Goers

Drunk Driving Carries Frightening Consequences, Washington Attorney Reminds Halloween Party Goers

Halloween night can be one of the deadliest nights of the year on Washington roads due to impaired drivers. Don't contribute to the problem. If you're going to a party, plan ahead and find a safe way home, Seattle attorney Dean Brett says.

Seattle, Washington (PRWEB) October 21, 2010

If you’re going to hang out with ghosts and goblins at a Halloween party this October, please make sure to find a safe way home instead of drinking and driving, Seattle, Washington personal injury attorney Dean Brett says.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics, drunk driving has become a serious problem in the United States. A recent NHTSA survey indicated that 1 in 5 Americans say they have driven after drinking.

Halloween night, in particular, can be one of the most dangerous nights of the year. In 2008, 58 percent of all highway fatalities across the nation on Halloween night (6 p. m. Oct. 31 to 5:59 a. m. Nov. 1) involved a car or motorcycle driver with a blood alcohol concentration of.08 or higher, the NHTSA reports.

“Don’t contribute to the problem by driving home from a Halloween party under the influence of alcohol,” says Brett, whose law firm, Brett & Coats, Attorneys at Law, PLLC, represents victims of car accidents and motorcycle accidents, including those involving drunk drivers.

The firm has dedicated a website, http://www. victimsofdrunkdrivers. com, to providing statistics, information and other resources to Washington residents whose lives have been impacted by an accident with an intoxicated driver. The site also tracks developments in local and national efforts to prevent drunk driving and DUI/DWI accidents.

“Plan ahead so that you will have a safe way home,” Brett says. “Otherwise, you and others may be encountering the very real, very frightening consequences of drunk driving.”

Brett reminds drivers that drunk driving can lead to jail time, the loss of your driver’s license, higher insurance rates, forfeiture of your vehicle and the possibility of being held liable for reckless or negligent driving in a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit.

“It endangers the health and safety of you and everyone else on the road,” Brett says.

Instead of getting behind the wheel after you have been drinking, or allowing someone else to drive home drunk, Brett suggests:
Making sure you will have a designated sober driver;  Calling a taxi, using public transportation or contacting a friend or family member to get you home safely; or  Taking the keys away from someone whom you know is about to drive home impaired.

“Finding another way home is not an inconvenience,” Brett says. “It’s common sense.”

No End In Sight To The Armour Thyroid Shortage?

No End In Sight To The Armour Thyroid Shortage?

Many Americans suffering from hypothyroidism are beginning to panic as the long-term shortage of Armour Thyroid, Nature-Throid, and Westhroid continues. The reality is that there is no need for Thyroid patients to panic. There is a little-known secret that thousands of Americans have already discovered. There is supply of desiccated Thyroid available.

(PRWEB) February 11, 2010

Many Americans suffering from hypothyroidism are beginning to panic as the long-term shortage of Armour Thyroid, Nature-Throid, and Westhroid continues. It seems to be a mystery as to why Forest Laboratories, the company that produces Armour Thyroid, suddenly stopped making their Thyroid product last Fall.

Forest Laboratories admits that there is a critical back-order of Armour Thyroid and they do not know when new supply will be available. Forest is recommending that patients contact their physician for alternative treatments such as Synthroid. Unfortunately, many patients simply can not handle taking Synthroid and need the natural desiccated thyroid product. This leaves these patients with a significant health concern and major dilemma.

Why is this problem so significant? Well, it is the opinion of many doctors that the thyroid gland is the most important gland in the body because it regulates metabolism. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include hair loss, heart palpitations, weight gain, sluggishness, achy joints and depression. Dealing with these symptoms can be extremely unpleasant.

U. S. pharmacies started to run out of Armour Thyroid months ago. There are a couple of alternatives, Nature-Throid and Westhroid, but these Thyroid products are also nearly impossible to find as well. Patients are definitely starting to feel panicked.

The reality is that there is no need for Thyroid patients to panic. There is a little-known secret that thousands of Americans have already discovered. The “secret” is that there is a natural desiccated Thyroid product readily available from Canada. The product is made by a company called ERFA. ERFA Thyroid is a Health Canada-approved desiccated Thyroid product similar to Armour Thyroid, Nature-Throid and Westhroid. ERFA has been producing their Thyroid product since 2005.

One licensed Canadian pharmacy, Universal Drugstore, has been at the forefront of supplying ERFA Thyroid to American patients. Universal Drugstore has supplied thousands of American customers with ERFA Thyroid in the past few months.

“We have thousands of U. S. residents getting desiccated Thyroid from us. We also have dozens of U. S. clinics that send all their Thyroid patients to us because of this supply issue,” says Jeremy Cockerill, a licensed pharmacist with Universal Drugstore. “Our pharmacists and pharmacy staff understand the important nature of this shortage and they do everything they can to fill Thyroid orders with the highest priority. We know people need this medication and we do our best to get it to them quickly”

U. S. customers who suffer from hypothyroidism and require desiccated Thyroid for their treatment can visit Universal Drugstore online at www. UniversalDrugstore. com or call them toll-free at 1-866-456-2456. Prescriptions and contact information can be faxed to 1-866-783-4223.

If the phone lines are busy customers should try again. Jeremy Cockerill explains, “due to the overwhelming need for this medication our phone lines have been swamped. We are doing our best to bring on more staff to handle the increased call volumes and to process orders quickly. We encourage people to place their orders online if they have access to the internet.”

Universal Drugstore also guarantees that they have the best pricing on ERFA Thyroid and will match any price. Universal Drugstore is a licensed Canadian pharmacy. They are members of the Canadian International Pharmacy Association as well as a 5-check PharmacyChecker. com-approved pharmacy.

Although there may be no end in sight to the desiccate Thyroid shortage in the United States, U. S. residents can access the ERFA Thyroid product from Universal Drugstore. For those patients needing natural desiccated Thyroid for the treatment of hypothyroidism this is a great alternative.

VA Maryland Health Care System Honors More than 1,000 Volunteers During National Volunteer Week

VA Maryland Health Care System Honors More than 1,000 Volunteers During National Volunteer Week

VA Maryland Health Care System honors its volunteers during National Volunteer Week, which runs from April 18 to 24. In fiscal year 2009, nearly 1,000 volunteers devoted more than 96,000, worth more than $1.1 million, and this year, 30 --including adults and teens--are being recognized with the prestigious President's Volunteer Service Award.

Baltimore, MD (Vocus) April 11, 2010

During National Volunteer Week - April 18-24 - Veterans Affairs (VA) Maryland Health Care System plans activities and recognition banquets to honor the nearly 1,000 community volunteers. In fiscal year 2009, volunteers devoted more 96,000 hours worth more than $1.1 million to honoring and serving Maryland’s Veterans at three VA inpatient facilities and five community based outpatient clinics throughout the state. This year, more than 30 volunteers—including adults and teens—are being honored with the prestigious President’s Volunteer Service and other awards, a small way to recognize and thank those indefatigable men and women serving Maryland’s Veterans.

“Veterans gave their best for our nation. We have an obligation to honor and respect their service, and volunteers fulfill that obligation daily,” said Dennis H. Smith, director of the VA Maryland Health Care System. “They play a crucial role in the care Veterans receive at VA facilities, not only here in Maryland, but across the country.”

The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain standard—measured by the number of hours served determined by age group over a 12-month period. At the Gold Level, children ages five to 14 must have accrued 100 or more hours; young adults 250 or more hours, adults, 500 or more hours and families and groups, 1,000 or more hours. At the Silver Level, children ages five to 14, 75-99 hours; young adults 175-249 hours, adults, 250 to 299 hours, and families and groups, 500 to 999 hours, while at the bronze level, children five to 14 must have worked 50 to 74 hours. Young adults earning a bronze level have served 100- 174 hours, adults, 100 to 249 hours and families and groups, 200 to 499 hours.

“Volunteers offer a link to the community, remind Veterans that their service has not been forgotten, and often provide the only visits for some Veterans whose families are distant or non-existent,” said Susan Kern, program manager for Voluntary Service. “Volunteers work in inpatient units, at community living facilities, in pharmacies, and work as drivers who help bring patients to and from medical appointments. Some participate in recreational activities, birthday celebrations or holiday events, and others simply sit and visit with Veterans, helping improve their overall quality of life.”

Adults being honored with the President’s Volunteer Service Award for 4,000 or more volunteer hours include:
Kenneth Guinther, of Darlinggon, Md, who volunteers as a Disabled American Veterans (DAV) driver at the Perry Point VA Medical Center;  Michael “Doc” Byrnes, of Randallstown, Md, who volunteers as a clerical worker at the Baltimore VA Medical Center;  Samuel McDowell, of Baltimore, who serves as the Baltimore VA Medical Center in the Acquisitions and Material Management Service; and  Mary Lou Broch, who volunteers at the Loch Raven VA Community Living and Rehabilitation Center.

Study by Capella University Faculty Member Following 9/11 Attacks Shows New Yorkers' Desire for Vengeance Among Lowest in Nation

Study by Capella University Faculty Member Following 9/11 Attacks Shows New Yorkers' Desire for Vengeance Among Lowest in Nation

Dr. Curtis Brant co-directed nationwide survey of 1,142 Americans that explores how we coped with the attacks.

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) December 18, 2005

A nationwide study co-directed by Capella University faculty member Dr. Curtis Brant has found that the desire for vengeance among New Yorkers following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks was among the lowest in the nation.

Dr. Brant conducted the study with Dr. Michael Johll of The Johll Consulting Group approximately one month after Sept. 11, 2001. Titled “Coping efforts from the September 11th terrorist attack,” the study involved face-to-face surveys with 1,142 Americans from across the continental United States, including New York City. According to Brant, he initiated the study to explore the role faith plays in how Americans cope with major disasters and whether or not it contributes to our success in coping with such events.

“We wanted to get the initial reaction so that it was fresh in people’s minds how they were coping with it. People were very willing to talk and very willing to fill out the survey,” he says. “We did become very invested in the study because we talked with everyone at length about their experiences. It was a very intense week that we were there in New York.”

It was while in New York that Brant and Johll collected the most intriguing responses to the survey. Compared to survey participants in other areas of the country, New Yorkers expressed the lowest desire for vengeance in response to the attacks. Respondents in other east coast states expressed a relatively high desire for vengeance, but not New Yorkers.

“It was so surprising and unexpected. That was the thing that stood out to us,” Brant says. “It was still a very, very real event one month later. Because of being directly effected by it … I think that New Yorkers were much less willing to wish this on someone else, because they lived through the devastation. I like to point to a particular firefighter who said, ‘I wouldn’t wish this on anyone, what happened to us.’”

Brant, who is a core faculty with Capella University’s School of Human Services, said the overall results of the study show that there were more similarities than not in how Americans coped with the events of Sept. 11, 2001. However, those who reported using religious coping methods, such as relying on clergy or others in their faith communities, appeared to have more success in coping with the attacks.

“We were interested to see if those people who relied on religious forms of coping fared better, mentally and physically, after the event than those who did not. Generally what we found is that people who used religious forms of coping had better outcomes. They were less depressed. They got over the event quicker and have better physical health.”

The survey consisted of a 10-page questionnaire with a total of about 300 questions. Brant and Johll are currently working on a book that details their experiences in conducting the study.

Irvine, Calif. (Vocus) November 5, 2008

LifeMasters (http://innovation. lifemasters. com/) Supported SelfCare, a national provider of health improvement programs and services, announced today that it has once again received Full Accreditation by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for its disease management (DM) programs for asthma, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), coronary artery disease, diabetes and hypertension.

The NCQA accreditation is a full, three-year renewal of patient and practitioner accreditation status. LifeMasters disease management programs were accredited by NCQA in 2002 and renewed in 2005. Full Accreditation is awarded to organizations that meet or exceed NCQA's standards for DM accreditation.

"LifeMasters strives to continuously improve its programs by using science-based formal processes and tools to evaluate the performance of each population. NCQA accreditation reflects this ongoing commitment to deliver best-in-class disease management programs that help participants achieve optimal health and reduce healthcare cost trends for our clients," said LifeMasters CEO Christobel Selecky. "We are proud that once again our programs have exceeded the nation's highest quality standards."

NCQA's disease management accreditation requires effective performance in six major areas: program content, patient services, practitioner services, clinical systems, measurement of quality improvement and program operations.

"NCQA's Disease Management accreditation program is thorough and rigorous. It's designed to highlight only those programs that truly improve chronic care," said NCQA President Margaret E. O'Kane. "LifeMasters is to be commended for coming forward to be reviewed."

NCQA accreditation standards are developed from input from researchers in the field, the Disease Management Advisory Council, and standing committees, employers, both purchasers and operators of disease management programs, state and federal regulators and other experts. The standards are purposely set high to encourage organizations to continuously enhance their quality.

HumanTouch is introducing the new Perfect Chair PC-075 (http://www. humantouch. com/pc075.html? utm_campaign=pressreleasejuly&utm_source=usiq&utm_medium=prweb&utm_nooverride=0) at the Las Vegas World Market. Providing a unique blend of comfort, back support, modern style and architectural design, the Perfect Chair's zero-gravity positioning reduces the daily physical strain exerted on the body by the Earth's gravitational pull.

Inspired by the Neutral Body Posture studied by NASA during the SkyLab program, this Perfect Chair places the body in a virtually weightless position. In this physician-recommended posture, the spine, hip, and knee joints are on or close to the balanced midpoint of the muscles. This results in natural relaxation and minimum muscle tension.

The Perfect Chair PC-075 gives your neck and back a much-needed breather and allows the body to restore its natural balance. And it's equally impressive on the eyes. With its numerous color combinations, solid eco-friendly parawood base, tapered footrest and sleek silhouette, this amazing chair fits your physique, conscience and design sense perfectly.

"The Perfect Chair (http://www. humantouch. com/perfect-chairs. html? utm_campaign=pressreleasejuly&utm_source=usiq&utm_medium=prweb&utm_nooverride=0) sets the bar for comfort," says Rich Jorgensen, Human-Touch chief marketing officer. "The chair's unique balance of back support, seating comfort, aesthetics and architectural design, delivers the optimum mode for neutral posture, minimizing stress on the muscles while enhancing overall circulation."

Complementing its zero-gravity technology, the Perfect Chair PC-075 recliner includes an electric recline system, which takes the chair from upright to full recline in less than 15 seconds with the touch of a button.

Equally beautiful in form and function, this remarkable Zero-Gravity Recliner artfully blends contemporary architecture with old-world design that fits any décor. Consumers customize their chairs to their tastes with options including four fashionable colors, three wood finishes and either top-grain premium leather upholstery or bonded leather.

The Perfect Chairs retail between $1,599 and $2,499 depending on customization and model chosen and are available at leading retailers across the country. PNC Bank Extends Leadership in Eco-Friendly Development with Trademark of "Green Branch(R)" Term

PNC Bank Extends Leadership in Eco-Friendly Development with Trademark of "Green Branch(R)" Term

The U. S. Patent & Trademark Office has granted a trademark for the term "Green Branch®" to The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE: PNC), which has more certified, environmentally friendly buildings than any other company on earth.

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) November 13, 2007

The U. S. Patent & Trademark Office has granted a trademark for the term "Green Branch®" to The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE: PNC), which has more certified, environmentally friendly buildings than any other company on earth.

"The trademark is affirmation of PNC's leadership in 'green' business practices during the past decade," said Gary Saulson, director, corporate real estate, PNC. "Our commitment to significantly reduce our impact on the environment has enabled us to lower costs, increase efficiency and productivity as well as enhance the communities where our customers and employees live, work and play."

PNC, honored in Working Mother magazine's November issue as one of the nation's "2007 Best Green Companies," is a nationally recognized leader in environmental sustainability. The firm has more buildings (42) certified by the U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC) than any other company - regardless of industry. This includes:
Green Branch® locations: 40 environmentally friendly bank branches across six states. This includes 15 branches recently granted simultaneous Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the USGBC. The first location opened in 2002, when PNC was the first U. S. bank to design and build green branches, which range in size from 3,200-3,600 square feet.

PNC Firstside Center: 24/7 bank operations center in downtown Pittsburgh with 1,500 employees. When it opened in 2000, it was the largest, LEED-certified green building in the world at 650,000 square feet (the equivalent of 12 football fields).

PFPC Headquarters: J. Richard Carnall Center in Wilmington, Del., headquarters of PNC's mutual fund processing division, opened in 2002 as the financial services industry's first Gold level, LEED-certified green building.

Future Projects: Besides future branch locations, LEED certification will be pursued for two major buildings in development: Three PNC Plaza in downtown Pittsburgh is scheduled to open in 2009 as the nation's largest green, "mixed-use" building (23 floors) with offices, retail, a hotel and condominiums; and the new regional headquarters for PNC's Greater Washington region to open in 2010, about one block from the White House.

"Consumers want to do business with socially responsible companies and PNC is leading the way in the banking industry," said Neil Hall, head of retail distribution, PNC Bank. "We are combining environmental building practices with innovative products and services to help our customers achieve their goals."

A main reason for the federal patent office's approval of PNC's trademark application is that financial and banking services are not generally associated with environmentally friendly or ecologically efficient characteristics.

"Our green efforts are completely consistent with our culture of continuous improvement," Hall said. "As with other aspects of our business, if there is a better way to do things, we want to find a way and implement it."
Building the Green Way

Based in Washington, D. C., the U. S. Green Building Council is the nation's leading coalition of corporations, builders, federal and local agencies working together to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work. The USGBC awards LEED certification based on points for construction and design.

Saulson, a winner of the USGBC's Leadership Award, said features of PNC's Green Branch® locations include:

Recycling: More than 50 percent of each branch, including carpet and furniture fabric, is made from recycled or "green" materials. For example, cabinetry and office doors are made of wheat board, a byproduct of wheat processing.

Energy & Water Efficiency: Energy usage is reduced 50 percent or more compared to a traditional branch due to high-efficiency systems and insulation along with maximum use of natural light, which also provides a more open and airy space for customers and employees. Water usage is reduced by 6,200 gallons a year.

Landfill/Waste Reduction: Construction waste, such as wood, steel and cardboard, is recycled or salvaged, reducing landfill waste by 150 tons per branch. Non-chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants are used in the cooling system to protect the ozone.

Customer Features: The contemporary design also includes a concierge desk with an employee to guide customers, minimum of four teller stations and drive-thru, Internet Café, coffee bar and plasma screens with business-related news and information.

PNC Bank is a member of the PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. PNC is one of the nation's largest diversified financial services organizations providing consumer and business banking; specialized services for corporations and government entities, including corporate banking, real estate finance and asset-based lending; wealth management; asset management; and global fund services.

Nurse-Owned Company Celebrates 20 Years of Staffing and Consulting in Managed Care

Nurse-Owned Company Celebrates 20 Years of Staffing and Consulting in Managed Care

In an era when half of all small businesses fail in the first five years, Professional Services Network, Inc. (PSN), an award-winning, nurse-owned company headquartered in suburban Washington, DC, is celebrating its 20th year in business. The company, a staffing and consulting firm with 13 local employees and revenues of $2 million, is a certified Maryland Minority Business Enterprise (woman-owned). Founded in 1990 by President & CEO Terri Kapetanovic, the company has been in the Aspen Hill section of Silver Spring, MD since it began.

Silver Spring, MD (PRWEB) September 28, 2010

PSN provides temporary and direct hire staffing of nurses with specialized expertise in managed care-related areas, such as case management, utilization review and quality management. The company’s clients include major hospital systems and nationally known healthcare companies. Several years ago, the company added recruitment for nursing education and leadership positions to its specialized recruiting focus. PSN provides consulting services to health care companies nationwide seeking to meet and maintain national industry accreditation standards through URAC, the Joint Commission and the National Committee for Quality Assurance. Recently, PSN created Reef Light Interactive, a division of PSN offering web site development and marketing.

Professional Services Network was incorporated in Maryland on April 11, 1990, and was the first nurse staffing company to offer medical record review services in quality, case management, and utilization review. The first services were provided to local companies in DC and Maryland by qualified and experienced registered nurses who had gained experience in a relatively new field of healthcare.

During the mid-1990s, the mission of PSN expanded to include providing health care accreditation consulting services. Through offering a larger scope of services, PSN grew from a locally-focused company to one working with top healthcare companies across the country. Consulting now accounts for about 40 percent of PSN’s revenue. PSN has broadened its recruitment and staffing to include licensed social workers and nurses specializing in other areas, such as nurse informatics.

Over the past 20 years, PSN has built a national network of registered nurses who are specialists in quality improvement, claims review, case management, and utilization review. Ms. Kapetanovic is a registered nurse licensed in Maryland and the District of Columbia. She holds a master’s degree in nursing from The Catholic University of America and is currently enrolled in a PhD program in nursing. The company and Ms. Kapetanovic have been honored with numerous awards, including Employer of the Year (Business & Professional Women of Montgomery County) and Top 100 Minority & Women Entrepreneurs in Maryland.

Webhire Unveils New Solution For Streamlining Employee Onboarding

Webhire onboarding helps companies reduce initial time to productivity and improve employee retention.

Lexington, MA (PRWEB) October 20, 2005

Webhire, Inc., a leader in talent management solutions, today announced Webhire Onboarding, a new solution designed to help employers improve the initial onboarding process for new employees. Webhire Onboarding provides Webhire customers with a flexible set of tools for initiating and tracking the tasks associated with bringing new hires into an organization, including provisioning, forms management and culturalization. The solution can also be used to offboard employees when separating from the company.

Webhire Onboarding helps facilitate an employee’s transition into an organization by providing employers a full set of tools for outlining, initiating and tracking the strategic initiatives involved in onboarding. Some of the activities that comprise the onboarding process include the communication, collaboration and tracking of internal and external activities required to prepare for a new hire’s first day. Additionally, onboarding calls for the delivery, completion and tracking of new hire documents and information pre - and post-start date, and the delivery of company, position and division or department specific information to the new hire.

“A smooth onboarding process helps improve employee retention, but it also reduces employer costs and ensures compliance with regulatory employment requirements,” said Allan Schweyer, Executive Director of the Human Capital Institute. “Webhire has gone beyond traditional products, offering a combination of features that provide wide functionality. Webhire Onboarding integrates provisioning tools with forms management and culturalization tools that will help employers complete the important tasks involved with onboarding."

Webhire Onboarding is the latest in a series of products and services designed to help employers strategically manage the entire employment life cycle; from initial attraction through strategic sourcing and selection techniques, to delivering effective hires based on a positive, meaningful candidate relationship, continuing through employee retention. Webhire Onboarding extends the capabilities of Webhire Recruiter, Webhire’s end-to-end talent management solution. Beyond the benefits of increased employee productivity and engagement, Webhire Onboarding helps companies reduce tactical expenses such as paper forms, physical storage requirements, manual data entry errors, and administrative staffing costs.

“Webhire has responded to the needs of the market by delivering a flexible, comprehensive onboarding solution,” said Susanne Bowen, Chairman and CEO of Webhire. “The first few days at a new job are critical in confirming an employee’s decision to join a new company and setting in motion positive employee engagement which directly improves their time to productivity. When employees are highly engaged, companies are more likely to retain them. Webhire Onboarding is an important milestone in our commitment to help customers attract, hire and retain the right talent.”
