More than 690,000 Americans have already received this season’s flu vaccine from their doctor, according to SDI’s VaccineTrack® data through Sept. 4.

More than 690,000 Americans have already received this season’s flu vaccine from their doctor, according to SDI’s VaccineTrack® data through Sept. 4. VaccineTrack® provides syndicated weekly vaccine usage by physicians based on medical office electronic healthcare reimbursement claims data.

The U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced an unprecedented campaign to combat seasonal flu through a universal vaccination strategy. CDC removed many restrictions and currently supports seasonal influenza vaccination for all persons 6 months of age and older based on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which advises CDC on vaccine issues.

In the 2010/2011 season, vaccine manufacturers are slated to produce more influenza vaccine than ever before. Shipments of influenza vaccine began weeks ahead of most other seasons in anticipation of rapid and wide-ranging vaccine uptake.

“These measures taken by CDC and vaccine manufacturers facilitate public health efforts to make flu vaccines available to all,” said Andrew Kress, CEO of SDI.

Soaring summer temperatures heightened concern for all animals in her care.

Susan Ewing, owner of Susie's Pet Sitting in Arlington, WA, believes her accreditation coursework (http://www. petsit. com/the-benefits-of-an-accredited-pet-sitter) through Pet Sitters International (http://www. petsit. com/content28) (PSI) helped her diagnose and treat severe heat stroke in a client's dog. Her actions helped to save its life.

Ewing became concerned for all the animals in her care during a heat wave a few years ago when temperatures soared to almost 100 degrees. She was especially worried when one of the dogs she visited daily did not come bounding down the driveway to greet her.

"I found the dog lying on the ground looking dazed,” Ewing said. "He had bright red gums and was acting almost as if he was in a drunken stupor. I moved him into the shade, cooled him down with the garden hose and wrapped him in wet towels.”

Ewing learned through PSI's Accreditation Program that the goal in treating heat stroke is to decrease the dog's body temperature to 104 degrees in the first ten to fifteen minutes, then stop the cooling process and proceed with transport to a veterinarian. The dog recovered with the help of Ewing's quick thinking and her ability to immediately recognize and treat the signs of heat stroke.

"Had it not been for the Accreditation Program I took through PSI, I'm not sure I would have known what to do,” Ewing said.

With more than half of U. S. adults expecting to take a trip during the next six months, professional pet-care givers are ramping up for a busy summer.

According to Ellen Price, academic manager and creator of PSI's Accreditation Program, research shows that pets are happier and experience less stress at home. A pet's diet and exercise routines are also uninterrupted and a pet's exposure to illness is minimized.

"Friends, family members or neighbors may seem like a logical choice for pet care,” Price said. "However, a professional pet sitter has the experience and qualifications necessary to appropriately care for companion animals.”

Stovetop Method

BCBSNC customers saved at least $15 million in out-of-pocket costs since January; 2.4 million generic prescriptions filled with no copay; Customers have until June 30,2009 to save with the generic copay waiver program

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) is helping customers save money and stay on their medications with the generic copay waiver program. BCBSNC customers saved at least $15 million in out-of-pocket expenses since the program started January 1, 2009. The program will run until June 30.

The generic copay waiver program is in effect until the end of the year for eligible customers taking generics to treat chronic conditions such as hypertension, congestive heart failure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

"In this tough economy, the generic copay waiver program allows BCBSNC customers to control out-of-pocket costs by using generic drugs," says Ron Smith, PharmD, BCBSNC vice president of employer health and corporate pharmacy. "The savings our customers see through the program reaffirms that the generic copay waiver program helps people to better manage their health and not be forced to choose between medication and paying their bills."

The 2009 generic copay waiver program applies to nearly 1 million BCBSNC customers and eliminates customer copays for covered generic drugs. Eligible BCBSNC customers include: 
Blue Advantage customers (once they meet their annual prescription deductible, if applicable). Medicare Supplement customers who have prescription coverage on their policies (once they meet their annual prescription deductible, if applicable). Members of insured employer groups (if their employer group has pharmacy benefits through BCBSNC). Members of self-funded employer groups (if their employer group has pharmacy benefits through BCBSNC and has chosen to participate in the program).

Generic drugs are equivalent to corresponding brand name drugs in active ingredients, dosage, strength, safety and performance, but they cost a fraction of their brand name counterparts. Since prescription drug costs are a key driver of rising medical costs, the long-term increased use of generics also impacts future premiums for the benefit to BCBSNC customers.

With or without the copay waiver, generic medications cost less out-of-pocket than brand-name medications. Generic copay waiver programs increase those savings and highlight the benefits of generic medications.

Applicants must be available all day and must also be able to schedule the week of May 17 - 21, 2006 in the event they are picked to move to the finals. The top winner of the Semi-Finals will be awarded a $500 check (Sponsored by Diane Duff of 365 Fitness) and go on to compete in the finals. One contestant will also be chosen to appear in the 2007 Men of Romance Calendar.

LOS ANGELES—Scott Yates, a 26-year old native of Sacramento, California will leave Los Angeles, along with his father, brother and sister, on Monday, October 8 to ride his bike across the country to show his support for victims of the recent terrorist attacks and to raise money for the Twin Towers Orphan Fund.

He plans to arrive in Manhattan on VeteranÂ’s Day, November 11 to ceremoniously present a check to the Mayor of New York for the money he and his family raised for the Twin Towers Orphan Fund. Along with the check will be a presentation of a scrapbook of photos and letters from individuals met along the way, sending on their words of hope and encouragement to the victims of these tragedies.

“We are all very proud of the Yates family and the commitment they have made to the Twin Towers Orphan Fund,” said David Mills, Executive Director of the Family-to-Family Mentoring program. “We hope this ride can go a long way to publicize the needs of the children left without a mother or father as a result of the September 11 tragedies.”

Yates, public relations professional in Sacramento, was moved to action after seeing the horror and trauma of the attacks on New York and Washington D. C. He will honor all the victims of this tragedy by riding his bike, along with his family through 35-plus cities across the U. S. They will average 100 miles a day and will be seeking donations for the Twin Towers Orphan Fund.

The team will split the route in sections. General Motors donated the use of a Pontiac Aztek which will serve as the “chase vehicle” throughout the cross-country trek and FreeCar Media wrapped the vehicle in red, white and blue to symbolize the patriotism of this effort.

The Twin Towers Orphan Fund was created by a group of 35 individual public relations practitioners and agencies nationwide. It is administered by the Family-to-Family Mentoring program of Bakersfield, California, a 501 c3 non-profit program of Garden Pathways Inc. Monies collected will be used to provide long-term educational and housing assistance, daily necessities, and mental and physical health care for the children affected by the attacks. This was a finding by Government Printing Sales, a division of the Chambersburg, PA-based e-LYNXX Corporation, as part of an overall study on the amount of work being bought by the Government Printing Office (GPO) on behalf of federal agencies.

During a recent 12 month period, the Defense Document Automation and Production Services, Army, Air Force, and Navy, along with the Department of Veterans Affairs purchased $119.7 million of work that includes books and cut sheet printing, business forms and labels, binders and folders, envelopes, and advertising specialty items procured and managed by the GPO. This figure does not include any allowable direct purchases made by these agencies.

Along with other support services, Government Printing Sales assists suppliers in qualifying for this work, targeting the right opportunities, establishing winning pricing, and submitting bids.

“As with any government procurement, there is an art to navigating the red tape of GPO and successfully obtaining awards,” says Deborah Snider, Division President for Government Printing Sales. “Working with our seasoned experts will assist printers in greatly enhancing profits by blending this work into their overall sales mix.”

Individually, Defense Document Automation and Production Services (DAPS) was the top customer of the GPO procuring than $83.1 million of work. DAPS was followed by the IRS with $52.6 million, Health & Human Services with $46.5 million, and the Social Security Administration with $37.1 million in procurements.

The study also showed that the Top 25 agency customers of GPO placed a combined 105,780 orders with private sector firms totaling $368.8 million These orders ranged in value from less than $100 to more than $1 million. The average order was approximately $3,500.

When Creighton University launched the nation's first Web-based entry-level doctor of pharmacy program in 2001 it didn't have the powerful Web collaboration tools it needed to satisfy the distance-learning students' needs. A Jesuit university located in Omaha, Neb., the school's Web conferencing technology allowed for some basic features, but offered very little interactivity beyond the basics. Worse, the technology only supported one session at a time, which clearly wouldn't satisfy the broad learning and collaboration requirements of the program.
