Pet Expert Charlotte Reed Recommends Holiday Gifts that are Safe and Fun for Pets

Pet Expert Charlotte Reed Recommends Holiday Gifts that are Safe and Fun for Pets

Pet expert's safe and fun holiday gift suggestions for dogs, cats and birds.

New York, NY (PRWEB) November 29, 2006

Sixty-nine million American households own a pet, and more than half of them will be buying a gift for their non-human family members this year. "For many, pets are the new kids," explains pet expert Charlotte Reed. "And just as you would check that a gift is safe for a child, be sure what you choose is safe for your pet."

"Before selecting a Christmas gift for your pet, think about what is going to be appropriate for its size, breed and personality," recommends Reed. Many pets have been injured and have died as result of unsafe toys.

Although pet owners might have fun dressing up their dog in a new winter coat, most dogs would prefer toys. For puppies, look for something soft and cuddly that can withstand the chewing of a teething pup. Adolescent canines are filled with energy and need toys that keep them busy and out of trouble. Try a stimulating toy that releases kibble or a battle-tested toy for nervous and big-time chewers. Stay away from stuffed animals that can easily be can be ripped apart because they can create a choking hazard or block your pet's digestive system.

Sporting and Terrier dogs need toys that can help them burn off their extra energy. Buy a ball that can withstand all of those games of fetch you'll be playing together, or get your dog to chase after the point of a laser light. Senior dogs, however, spend most of their time sleeping, so they're likely to ignore toys a younger canine might drool over. Look for a bed that helps pad tender joints, or choose a blanket they can snuggle with when they are relaxing on the couch.

Bored cats are likely to go looking for ways to satisfy their natural instincts to hunt and play. Before your cat chews up a poisonous plant or knocks down a glass vase because she's fighting her reflection, give her a toy that gets her pouncing, batting, chasing and jumping -- safely. Fishing pole toys will keep her busy for hours, and she's sure to really show her love for you if you give her some catnip, preferable wrapped up to look like a nice, juicy mouse.

Caged birds require stimulation to be healthy. Buy several toys, and rotate them regularly to keep your bird interested. Keep in mind the bird's strength: a mirror with bells is good fun for small birds, but dangerous for larger birds that can easily break it. Rope toys provide hours of play, but can snag on overgrown nails, so get Polly's nails trimmed regularly.

"Some toys come with age or energy level recommendations, but remember that you're the one that knows your pet best. A toy might claim to be unbreakable, but if your Rottweiler has what seems to be jaws of steel, don't risk it," warns Reed.

Charlotte Reed is an international pet expert. Renowned for her pet know-how, energy and wit, she's a popular television and radio guest, writer, spokesperson and lecturer. She is the owner of Two Dogs and a Goat, Incorporated., a leading in-home pet care business in New York City. Her new book The Miss Fido Manners Complete Book of Etiquette (Adams Media) hits store shelves in July. Miss Reed is the pet parent of four dogs, three cats, one parrot and a cage full of finches.

"Confidence" Auctioned on eBay ... Bidding is Underway

"Confidence" Auctioned on eBay... Bidding is Underway

The age of mental skills training has fully arrived as eBay users can now bid on a one-hour mental coaching session aimed at teaching confidence, or any of 7 other critical mental skills important in success

Palm Beach, FL (PRWEB) November 27, 2005 –

Nov. 27, 2005 - The Cowardly Lion received his medal for courage on the Wizard of Oz. Now, for the First Time, Confidence is being auctioned on eBay. As the age of mental skills training has fully arrived, eBay users can now bid on a one-hour mental coaching session aimed at teaching confidence, or any of 7 other critical mental skills important in success. The session may be given as a gift.

A performance specialist in business, sports, academics, and healthcare is offering on Ebay a one - hour mental coaching session by phone or in person aimed at teaching one of the 8 critical mental skills. Bidding on Ebay started at $10 and any amount above the one-hour session fee will be donated to charity.

John F. Murray, who authored the best-selling tennis book "Smart Tennis" (endorsed by world #1 Lindsay Davenport) and who works with businesses, healthcare personnel, NFL players, as well as professional golfers, tennis players, and other athletes, believes that it's extremely important to get the message out about the benefits of training the brain.

"We've gone as far as we can go physically, but mental training is a territory with unlimited potential for improvement in business, sports, or life," stated Murray. "With the mind, limitations are always self-imposed," added the doctor.

The highest bidder will receive one hour with Dr. Murray by phone or in person. This hour is not for psychological counseling or psychotherapy, but rather for a mental teaching session focused on one of the following mental skills: confidence, focus, energy control, goal setting, imagery, enjoyment, resilience or discipline.

Many pro athletes, teams, businesses, and organizations receive the benefits of mental coaching, but the general population is still often surprised to know that these services even exist, as there are few legitimate performance psychologists or other professionals to provide these services. "It's truly a cutting edge science and profession, says Murray, but the benefits have been demonstrated time and time again."

Bids may be made by going to: http://www. JohnFMurray. com (http://www. JohnFMurray. com) and clicking on the link to the item on eBay, or by clicking directly to the eBay listing at: http://cgi. ebay. com/ws/eBayISAPI. dll? $10,000 in Grants Awarded by Operation REACH's Gulfsouth Youth Action Fund for 2010. Local youth strive to empower their peers by supporting positive, youth-driven programs.

The Gulfsouth Youth Action Fund (GYAF) will proudly award $10,000 in grants to five youth-led, youth-driven organizations to increase meaningful ways to address the interests and social concerns impacting youth and their peers in the community. To honor the grantees for their outstanding work, an announcement ceremony will be held at 6:30 p. m., on Thursday, February 4, 2010, at the Operation REACH, Inc. National Headquarters, located at 2115 Carondelet Street, New Orleans, Louisiana.

New Orleans, LA (PRWEB) February 4, 2010

The Gulfsouth Youth Action Fund (GYAF) will proudly award $10,000 in grants to five youth-led, youth-driven organizations to increase meaningful ways to address the interests and social concerns impacting youth and their peers in the community. To honor the grantees for their outstanding work, an announcement ceremony will be held at 6:30 p. m., on Thursday, February 4, 2010, at the Operation REACH, Inc. National Headquarters, located at 2115 Carondelet Street, New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Gulfsouth Youth Action Fund, founded in 2007 by Operation REACH, Inc., gives a select group of outstanding young people the knowledge, know-how and desire to become leaders of change in their communities by empowering them with the tools and training to make strategic investments in their peers. The Gulfsouth Youth Action Fund is a leading youth philanthropy and leadership training program that empowers youth to address the interests and social concerns impacting their peers through support of youth-led and youth-driven initiatives that model healthy youth development opportunities and foster communities in which young people can live, learn, lead, thrive, and grow.

Since November of 2009, the GYAF has received more than 70 applications for funding of a variety of youth-driven community projects from across the South. Over the last two months, the GYAF board deliberated and carefully reviewed proposals on given criteria, including the strength of youth leadership, innovation, feasibility, and organization.

Thirty-one votes were cast, and the top five organizations to be funded were decided based on their merits. Project South's Youth Community Action Project in Atlanta, GA and Kids Rethink New Orleans Schools' Through the Youth Lens Project in New Orleans, LA. Project South's Youth Community Action Project in Atlanta, Georgia, aims to develop youth leadership by providing popular political education to young people in Atlanta, to create alternative youth-run media programs, and organizes for local community power. Of particular interest was Project South's youth-run radio program, "Youth Speak Truth," a program created by and for youth in the Atlanta area aimed to educate and discuss an array of content, including politics, crime, music and history.

Kids Rethink New Orleans Schools is made up of New Orleans school students, mainly middle school-aged, who come together to create change and reform in schools around the city. Their project, "Through the Youth Lens," supplies students with cameras to photograph and capture the realities of New Orleans schools from their own perspectives. The photographs are then put on display throughout the city to create a greater awareness of the issues in the schools.

Three equally inspiring programs are also being funded by the GYAF, including, Star Hill Mentoring Project's Global Connection Service Project, based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Amplify Resources' Positive Action & Positive Attitude summer camps, located in Mandeville, Louisiana, and the Warren Easton High School's Interact Club, who works with the Ronald McDonald House in New Orleans.

Operation REACH is a national organization that engages, empowers, and inspires children, youth and families through innovative community-based learning opportunities. ORI is also one of the only Louisiana-born AmeriCorps organization to receive funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service for national expansion. Perry Baromedical Corporation Offers Hospitals State-of the-Art Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers

Perry Baromedical Corporation Offers Hospitals State-of the-Art Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers

With over 7,000,000 Americans suffering from chronic wounds and 60,000 Americans dying annually from wound complications, the need for more aggressive wound treatment options is substantial. The discovery that hyperbaric oxygen can hasten and even help difficult cases of non-healing wounds to improve is a major advancement and one of the more important medical breakthroughs of our time.

Riviera Beach, FL (PRWEB) November 28, 2007

Hospital-based wound care accounts for approximately $7.5 billion dollars in medical costs annually, and the number is steadily increasing. As the Boomer generation ages and with diabetes, heart disease, and obesity on the rise, the wound care market is growing at a significant rate. Although Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has been utilized for over forty years, HBOT wound care programs are now helping to revolutionize how hospitals deal with society's shifting health care challenges.

Perry Baromedical, a leader in hyperbaric oxygen chambers, is on the cutting edge of HBOT with their SIGMA 40, the largest monoplace chamber in the industry. The larger size allows for added comfort while promoting increased patient compliance. Over five million hours of hyperbaric treatments have been safely performed in Perry chambers. They are the only company to design, manufacture, install and service monoplace, dualplace and multiplace hyperbaric chambers. In 1981, Perry Baromedical Corporation installed their first chamber, and since that time they have installed hundreds more both nationally and internationally.

With Addition of Wound Care Clinics, Hospitals' Revenue Expected to Exceed $13 Billion Annually

Hospitals with wound care programs that utilize Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can anticipate a gain in additional yearly revenue of an estimated 25%-40% and will typically see profits in the first year. Based on current growth trends, by the year 2010 wound care clinics that offer HBOT will exceed $13 billion dollars annually.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is used primarily for the treatment of non-healing wounds. The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services recognize a total of 15 approved conditions. In America alone, 21 million people suffer from diabetes; 60 million adults are clinically obese; and 35 million people are over the age of 65. As these numbers continue to rise, so does the need for aggressive wound treatment options. Currently, only 30% of hospitals in half the states have an outpatient wound care program that utilizes HBOT. Hospitals without HBOT have a significant opportunity to meet the needs of this growing market and earn substantial profits.

Foreword Reviews, January 5, 2005

You know that waiver that your doctor, dentist, pharmacist, and sundry other healthcare staff have given you to sign every time you've visited them in the past year? Despite how annoying it might be to sign that form for the umpteenth time, this book and CD show that there's a good reason for it.

We live in a technologically savvy world, where computer predators would love nothing more than to have access to all your vital statistics for a variety of nefarious reasons. While the medical community still needs to have appropriate access to information about your health, you need assurances that your identity is secure. Hence, the federal HIPAA guidelines.

Especially in a hospital setting, the need for regulations to protect privacy and confidentiality of patient records and clinical data is critical. This book and CD combination simplifies, as much as possible, how healthcare facilities, especially hospitals, can control access to necessary information about their patients, maintain computer security, and comply with HIPAA guidelines.

A computer security system that complies with HIPAA begins with training the personnel responsible for data collection to diligently keep track of all entries to the computer system and of every bit of information leaving that system. Methods of ensuring this include firewalls, backing up data to off-site computers, backing up data to floppy disks, and encrypted passwords.

The next step is to ensure that unauthorized personnel are never allowed to operate the system unless given expressed permission to do so. In between the authorized and unauthorized staff can be a ladder of categories restricting access to certain types of information.

When outside contractors are utilized, some form of agreement must be ratified between the contractor and the facility that preserves the integrity of all information shared. The HIPAA guidelines discuss the need for this type of agreement, and HIPAA Focused Training 4A Data and Computer Security Manual and CD gives further details that should be helpful to those setting out on such a partnership.

Common sense is stressed throughout this book and CD, always an important consideration when dealing with government regulations and the problems and challenges sure to arise during efforts to comply. For example, HIPPA guidelines require an ongoing log of all personnel activities regarding protecting data. This book and CD give basic and easy-to-follow details on how to set up and maintain that log.

After reading HIPAA Focused Training 4A Data and Computer Security Manual and CD, healthcare workers can give their patients that ubiquitous form to sign with confidence, knowing their facility has the procedures in place to respect sensitive information.

Dental Sealant Available Without Bisphenol A (BPA)

Dental Sealant Available Without Bisphenol A (BPA)

Dental sealants are routinely applied to children’s teeth to help prevent cavities. While almost all resin-based sealants contain derivatives of bisphenol A (BPA), a controversial chemical that has been linked to health risks, there is one safe exception without BPA or BPA derivatives: Embrace WetBond Pit & Fissure Sealant (Pulpdent Corporation, Watertown, MA).

Chadds Ford, PA (PRWEB) September 14, 2010

The application of dental sealants does not need to expose children to BPA. Safe, approved, BPA-free alternatives are available to dentists and their patients.

A study published online Sept 6th in the journal Pediatrics assessed BPA exposures from dental materials and the potential health risk to patients. While the authors did not recommend a ban of these products, they recommended that precautions be taken to reduce BPA exposure during sealant application and said that the development of BPA–free dental materials should be a priority.

Embrace WetBond Pit & Fissure Sealant is the only resin-based sealant that contains no BPA and no BPA derivatives. “This morning alone we received five calls about this issue,” says Fred Berk of Pulpdent, manufacturer of the popular Embrace product. “We’ve been making a BPA-free sealant for nine years. There’s no reason for parents to have to choose between protecting their child’s teeth and protecting their overall health.”

Research with laboratory animals has linked BPA exposure to heart health issues, and increased risk for cancer and diabetes, and hyperactivity. A study by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) of the National Institutes of Health evaluated the possible effects of exposures to BPA on human development. The NTP concluded that there was some concern for effects on the brain, behavior, and prostate gland in fetuses, infants, and children.

Experts are continuing to study BPA and its impact on human health. In the meantime, most experts are advising people to minimize exposure whenever possible.

Pulpdent manufactures high-quality products for the dental profession, including adhesives, composites, sealants, cements, etching gels, calcium hydroxide products, endodontic specialties, and bonding accessories. For more information, call 800-343-4342 or visit www. pulpdent. com.

Doctors Warned that Paxil Study Indicates Increased Risk of Birth Defects in Infants Born to Women on the Antidepressant

Doctors Warned that Paxil Study Indicates Increased Risk of Birth Defects in Infants Born to Women on the Antidepressant

National Law Firm is investigating claims of birth defects in infants born to women who took the antidepressant Paxil during pregnancy.

Austin, TX (PRWEB) September 30, 2005

The Johnson Law Firm, (http://nationwidejustice. com/Paxil (http://nationwidejustice. com/Paxil))

Announced today that it is investigating claims of birth defects in infants born to women who took the antidepressant Paxil.

The FDA and the maker of the drug announced today the results of a study that indicates a 50% higher risk of birth defects in infants born to women taking Paxil. Cardiovascular defects such as ventricular septal defect are among the common defects found in infants who were born to women on Paxil.

According to attorney Steven Johnson of The Johnson Law Firm, "None of the mothers of these children with birth defects were warned that taking this drug increased the risk of birth defects, now these infants and their families will have to deal with this for the rest of their lives. We will seek a fair measure of justice for our clients and punitive damages against the responsible parties."

FDA notified healthcare professionals this week of changes to the Pregnancy/PRECAUTIONS section of the Prescribing Information for Paxil and Paxil CR Controlled-Release Tablets to describe the results of a study of major congenital malformations in infants born to women taking antidepressants during the first trimester of pregnancy. This study suggested an increase in the risk of overall major congenital malformations for Paxil (paroxetine) as compared to other antidepressants.

The Johnson Law Firm will seek a full measure of justice against the makers of Paxil for the injuries they caused to infants with birth defects and their families.

Family members who have a child with birth defects, especially heart defects, after the mother took Paxil during the pregnancy should immediately contact The Johnson Law Firm for a free claim evaluation at toll free 1-866-374-0338 or at (http://nationwidejustice. com/Paxil (http://nationwidejustice. com/Paxil)).

Honolulu (PRWEB) March 24, 2010

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the internationally renowned spiritual leader and humanitarian, is bringing his timely message of peace and empowerment to Honolulu on Friday, April 9, during a public appearance at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i. The event called Unlocking the Secrets of Life—An Evening of Wisdom & Meditation launches a 12-city tour of the United States and Canada hosted by the Art of Living Foundation.

Recently named one of the five most powerful people in India by Forbes Magazine, Sri Sri has inspired a global phenomenon of compassion and service through his campaign to create a Violence-Free, Stress-Free world. His non-profit organizations provide aid and relief in many of the world’s most difficult regions, including quake-stricken Haiti. His initiatives in meditation and self-development, conflict resolution, disaster relief, business and social responsibility, prisoner rehabilitation programs, youth leadership, women’s empowerment and education have impacted the lives of more than 25 million people worldwide.

Through the years, Sri Sri has conferred with many of the world’s major political, religious and business leaders, sharing the universality of the goals and values of the great spiritual traditions.

“This is an extraordinary opportunity for people across the country to meet one of the world’s most revered spiritual leaders and humanitarians,” said Michael Fischman, President of the Art of Living Foundation. “In these times torn by strife and uncertainty, his teachings are more essential than ever.”

Unlocking the Secrets of Life will run from 7 – 9:30 p. m. on Friday, April 9th at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i. Sri Sri makes life’s profound truths accessible to people of all backgrounds with inimitable wit, wisdom and simplicity of language.

Art of Living in Hawai‘i

The Art of Living Foundation’s programs, based on a powerful healing breath technique called Sudarshan Kriya, were first established in Hawai‘i in 1993. Since then, over 1,000 people on all islands and from all walks of life (including attorneys, teachers, students, housewives and corporate executives) have participated in our courses and benefited from the practices. “Sometimes people are skeptical at first, but almost everyone who follows through with regular practice reports a marked reduction in their stress levels, clearer thinking and more even emotions—some just say they feel happier and are more balanced,“ says Pauline Sheldon, Art of Living Teacher and UH professor.

In addition to group workshops, the Hawai‘i Art of Living Chapter has taught breathing techniques in the Hawai‘i prison system and is currently developing meditation training programs for Hawai‘i hotel employees and administrators.
From Hawai‘i the tour moves to Los Angeles where Sri Sri will rededicate and inaugurate a new Center, a historic former church and architectural treasure, for the Art of Living Foundation on April 14.

Founded in 1981, the Art of Living Foundation (www. artofliving. org) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational and humanitarian organization working in special consultative status with the United Nations Social and Economic Council on initiatives related to health, education, sustainable development, conflict resolution and disaster relief. A Healthy Spin on the Bachelorette Party, Orlando-Area Resort Offers "Boot Camp for Brides"

A Healthy Spin on the Bachelorette Party, Orlando-Area Resort Offers "Boot Camp for Brides"

Forget the Vegas "Bad Girls" Bachelorette Party. The new trend is a "Good Girls" weekend in Orlando. Gaylord Palms Resort has put a practical spin on the bachelorette party by taking this popular tradition from a night of gluttonous chaos to a customized weekend getaway for the bride and her friends. The resort's newest offering is Boot Camp for Brides Challenge, an experiential offering that gives healthier ways to channel the pre-nuptial stress-level. A perfect Bachelorette Party idea for Orlando.

Kissimmee, FL (PRWEB) May 14, 2008

Suddenly, 'Bridezilla' has gone Old School. Today's brides are finding healthier ways to channel their pre-nuptial stress-level, with such programs as Boot Camp for Brides Challenge, the newest experiential offering of Gaylord Palms Resort (http://www. gaylordpalms. com), and part of its successful Good Girls Bachelorette Getaways (http://www. gaylordpalms. com/goodgirls) program, launched last year.

Gaylord Palms Resort has put a practical spin on the bachelorette party by taking this popular tradition from a night of gluttonous chaos to a customized weekend getaway for bride and friends. The Good Girls Bachelorette Getaway gives the bride the opportunity to choose from an extensive list of experiences to enjoy with her friends.

As wedding bells count down for the stressed bride-to-be, Boot Camp for Brides experiences are designed to fit within the weekend of festivities, including:

O Fit for a Bride: A 90-minute consultation giving the bride an opportunity to develop a personal plan that includes fat-burning cardio and strength-training regiments to target areas of the body so that bride or bridesmaid can fit into her special gown.

O Bridal Meditation: A 60-minute class that teaches the bride how to meditate wedding stress away at any point during the wedding planning process, whether she's on her way to a dress fitting or getting ready to walk down the aisle.

O Nutritional Engagement: A 60-minute consultation that focuses on a custom nutrition plan best suited for the bride (or bridesmaids) by identifying proper eating tips to expedite a healthy transition from engagement day to wedding day.

With experiences such as these, administered by the staff of the Canyon Ranch SpaClub Fitness Center located at Gaylord Palms Resort, the bachelorette party can be a source of positive stress release. Additional experiences such as private skin consultations and in-suite fitness classes can leave a bride feeling buff, beautiful and confident that she is on a healthier path.

"We're not taking credit for inventing the Bachelorette Getaway, but we would like to think that we've reinvented the experience to the benefit of stressed-out brides," says Amy Grimes, Experience Coordinator for Gaylord Palms Resort. "Even after her plans are finalized, the one thing the bride often stresses about is feeling and looking good on her wedding day. Many brides set unrealistic goals, which can lead them down an unhealthy wedding aisle."

The Bachelorette party comes at a crucial time during the planning process. A recent study published in the journal Appetite followed the diet patterns of 272 engaged women, and found that more than 70 percent of these brides were trying to lose on average 20+ pounds in a six month timeframe. The study also found that 20 percent of the women used "extreme" methods of losing weight, to include skipping meals, going on liquid diets, and even taking laxatives or making themselves sick.

The Gaylord Palms' "Boot Camp" program focuses on realistic goal-setting for the bride, and most importantly, is something she can experience with her supportive friends. "We're not taking the fun out of the bachelorette party," continued Grimes. "In fact, we still encourage the bride to have a crazy good time. We're just offering the bride a chance to carve out part of the weekend to focus on herself - as well as her health - before the big day."

Orlando continues to grow as a destination for weddings, honeymoons, and wedding-related activities, such as bachelor and bachelorette parties. The number of weddings held in Orlando exploded in 1991 when Walt Disney World launched its Fairy Tale Weddings service.

Imperial Beach's WiLDCOAST Receives Environmental Grant From California American Water

Imperial Beach's WiLDCOAST Receives Environmental Grant From California American Water

Funds will be used to restore and clean up Otay and Tijuana River Watersheds

San Diego, CA (Vocus) July 23, 2009

California American Water announced today that WiLDCOAST in Imperial Beach will receive funding through the Company's 2009 Environmental Grant Program. WiLDCOAST, an international non-profit agency that protects and preserves coastal ecosystems, will receive a $7,500 grant, which California American Water earmarked for community-based projects that improve, restore or protect watershed areas.

A panel of employee judges selected the winning grant proposals from a wide variety of organizations across the state, which were evaluated on such criteria as environmental need, innovation, community engagement and sustainability.

"Our Environmental Grant Program has been very successful in helping local organizations carry out meaningful, sustainable environmental initiatives year after year," said Rob MacLean, president of California American Water. "The grant recipients this year exemplify the type of environmental stewardship that we are proud to support."

WiLDCOAST is an international non-profit agency that protects and preserves coastal ecosystems by building grassroots support, conducting outreach and education campaigns and establishing protected areas. California American Water will grant the agency $7,500 for their cleanup and restoration projects targeting the Tijuana and Otay River watersheds.

Both rivers are vital to the San Diego community and both are the common target of illegal dumping and pollution. WiLDCOAST estimates that pollution in the Tijuana River is responsible for 80 percent of San Diego County's total beach closures every year.

WiLDCOAST will recruit and train local environmental stewards and initiate routine cleanup events and pollution monitoring and reductions activities in both watersheds.

"These rivers, which feed directly into the San Diego Bay and area beaches are in urgent need of help," said WiLDCOAST's acting executive director Fay Crevoshay. "With this grant, we will work to reverse the effects of decades of pollution and finally restore these vital waterways."

California American Water, a wholly owned subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK), provides high-quality and reliable water and/or wastewater services to more than 600,000 people. Founded in 1886, American Water is the largest investor-owned U. S. water and wastewater utility company. With headquarters in Voorhees, N. J., the company employs more than 7,000 dedicated professionals who provide drinking water, wastewater and other related services to approximately 15 million people in 32 states and Ontario, Canada. More information can be found by visiting www. amwater. com.

WiLDCOAST began its Clean Water Campaign in 2005 in response to the environmental and health impacts associated with pollution in the Tijuana River. The organization's work has influenced policy decisions at the local, state and federal levels, including the upgrade of the International Wastewater Treatment Plant, which discharges off Imperial Beach. In 2008, the Otay River Program was launched to increase community stewardship of the Otay River Valley.

Alternative Cook Offers Nutrition Tips for National Nutrition Month

Alternative Cook Offers Nutrition Tips for National Nutrition Month

Jean Duane, Alternative Cook offers easy tips for National Nutrition Month on converting recipes to be more nutritious, gluten and dairy free, with fewer calories and no cholesterol. Sound impossible? Read on. You might be surprised at how easy it is.

Centennial, CO (PRWEB) March 11, 2009

To maximize health during National Nutrition Month, how about designating two or three days a week as 'healthy days' and eat vegetarian or even vegan on those days? The benefits extend from loosing weight to saving money. "Vegetarian foods taste great if you know a few tricks. It's less expensive, more nutritious and lower calorie than dairy and animal-based foods. Go gluten-free for maximum benefits" says cooking DVD producer and author, Jean Duane, Alternative Cook. http://www. alternativecook. com (http://www. alternativecook. com).

Let's say you enjoy Mexican foods, but want to avoid the meat, cheese, high fat calories and cholesterol associated with it. Two beef and cheese enchiladas on average contain 1400 calories, 90 grams of fat and 234 grams of cholesterol. That's more than half of your recommended daily allowance! To make authentic-tasting Mexican foods packed with nutrition, first think about the spices and flavors identified with Mexican foods such as chili powder, fresh cilantro, jalapenos, mild green chilies, garlic, oregano, cumin, coriander, tomatoes, lime and tamarind. Next, think about the 'mouth-feel' - the smooth, creamy cheese and guacomole, spicy sauces combined with chewy tortillas and crunchy chopped vegetables on top. Finally, consider main ingredients - beans, corn, rice, meat, cheese, salsa, sour cream, tortillas and vegetables. With this in mind, let's look at alternatives to convert a traditional dish to be vegetarian, gluten and dairy free to boot!

Nutritious Alternatives
Beef:
To cut calories and cholesterol, instead of using beef, use half pinto beans and half chopped mushrooms. This combination makes a nice "beefy" taste and texture, but with no fat or cholesterol.

Cheese:
Instead of using high-fat cheddar or American cheese, make a dairy free filling with tofu, nutritional yeast, garlic and fresh herbs. It is delicious and tastes just like cheese. Forego the cheese on top, and substitute with fresh shredded zucchini and salsa.

Sour Cream
Thinning silken tofu in a food processor adding a little vinegar, lemon juice and olive oil makes delicious sour cream alternative with no fat and no cholesterol. (Recipe below.)

Emphasize Veggies
Top the dish with chopped spinach, shredded jicama or lettuce and pile on the guacomole. Guacomole may contain fat, but it is good for you, and so easy to make. Just mash avocado with a little lemon juice and garlic salt.

Fresh Salsa
Fresh salsas the perfect thing to celebrate Nutrition Week and spring! Just chop jicama, fresh cilantro, tomatoes, onion, corn kernels, a little lime juice, and salt.

Equipped with these new alternatives, let's convert a recipe. The new version has 647 calories, 19 grams of fat and 0 cholesterol. Just knowing you reduced the calories by 54%, fat by a whopping 79% and cholesterol to zero - without sacrificing the taste - you and your family will enjoy it even more! To learn more about how to enjoy the wonderful flavors of Mexico, gluten and dairy free with no cholesterol please visit http://tinyurl. com/ddd3wo (http://tinyurl. com/ddd3wo).

Traditional
Beef and Cheese Enchiladas
2 TBS oil
1 yellow onion
2 pounds ground beef
1 TBS chili powder
1 TBS cumin
2 tsp. coriander
1 cup medium salsa
1 tsp. garlic salt
12 corn tortillas
1 pound shredded cheddar cheese
Top with sour cream

Healthier Conversion
"Beef" and "Cheese" Enchiladas
With Sour Cream Alternative
1 TBS oil
1 yellow onion
1/2 pound button mushrooms
2 cans pinto beans (drained)
1 TBS chili powder
1 TBS cumin
2 tsp. coriander
1 cup medium salsa
1 tsp. garlic salt
12 corn tortillas
8 oz. silky tofu
3 TBS nutritional yeast
1 TBS rice vinegar
1/2 tsp. salt
2 TBS olive oil
1 TBS lemon juice

Directions to make Healthier Version:
1. Chop mushrooms and place in a skillet with oil. Cook on medium heat until half done. Add onions. Cook until onions are opaque. Add pinto beans, chili powder, cumin, coriander, salsa and garlic salt.
2. Heat a clean skillet and spray with spray-on oil. Place a corn tortilla on the hot surface. Press with a spatula and turn. Repeat for all tortillas. (Most corn tortillas are gluten free.)
3. Fill tortillas and place in a casserole and bake for 35 minutes at 350 degrees.
4. To make sour cream alternative, place tofu, yeast, vinegar, salt and lemon juice in a food processor. Drizzle in oil and process until smooth. Taste. Adjust.
5. Remove enchiladas from oven and top with sour cream alternative, shredded spinach, zucchini and home-made salsa. Serves 6.

Converting a recipe like this is good news for those with Celiac disease, gluten or dairy intolerance, high cholesterol, and for those with Autism or Aspergers' disease following a GFCF (gluten-free, casein-free) diet. Denver, CO (PRWEB) April 12, 2007

LoDo’s First Annual Earth Action Fest (LEAF), a two-week gala celebrating Earth Day and empowering Metro Denver residents with positive green strategies, will begin on April 15, 2007 with a special book presentation at the Tattered Cover by Senator John Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry, and conclude on April 27, 2007 with a zero-waste, fuel-cell-powered, LEAF Finale – a block party complete with food, music by The Reals and plenty of great ideas for the planet.

In between, visitors can enjoy free book readings and movie screenings at the Tattered Cover; participate in a tree planting with former Mayor Wellington Webb and students from Lake Middle School; sample organic wines at a tasting hosted by The Sierra Club; and take tours of the new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) headquarters and The Alliance Center – two of Colorado’s greenest buildings. Throughout the festivities, visitors will be treated to a variety of food and entertainment from a number of local sponsors.

“LEAF is a party with purpose – an environmental extravaganza that’s all about taking action to educate, inspire, and motivate our community about the challenges we face and the steps we can all take to make a difference for our planet,” said Kendra Sandoval of The Alliance for Sustainable Colorado (http://allianceforcolorado. org (http://allianceforcolorado. org)), a host of the LEAF festival.

“There’s no better time than now to help protect and improve Colorado’s remarkable environmental heritage,” added Heather Duncan of the Tattered Cover Book Store, LEAF host and sponsor of a series of environmentally-focused book readings and movie screenings.

Kabir Releases New Album “Peaceful Solutions” on Raptivism Records April 25th

Kabir will release his third full length album, “Peaceful Solutions” on April 25, 2006 in partnership between Uncle Trouble Music and Raptivism Records. He is also the son of world-famous Nobel Prize winning economist Amartya Sen.

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 30, 2006

Kabir, a veteran of the Boston hip hop scene, will release his third full length album, “Peaceful Solutions” on April 25, 2006 in partnership between Uncle Trouble Music (Kabir’s own label) and NYC based Raptivism Records. Kabir, who has released tracks in the past with Mr. Lif, Esoteric and Virtuoso, is unique as the only nationally recognized MC of South Asian descent. He is also the son of world-famous Nobel Prize winning economist Amartya Sen.

Like his father, Kabir focuses his talents on alleviating the ills plaguing world society. “Peaceful Solutions” takes a hard look at many of the struggles going on around the globe today and advocates a new way of attacking the problems that we as a society face. Tracks like “Where You At?” take a more personal look at Kabir’s search for inner peace in addition to his belief in a more enlightened political process.

Vincent Merry, President of socially conscious Raptivism Records says “Kabir is in a unique position to influence people in many walks of life. We hope that his fusion of hip-hop, funk and conscious themes reaches that maximum number of people possible, starting in his home, Boston, where so many people come to study.”

Kabir will be performing regularly around the northeast in support of the new album with initial CD Release Party dates in Boston and New York. On Friday, April 28th he will be at the Paradise Lounge – 969 Commonwealth Ave. in Boston with Primary Others, Elemental Zazen, ViceVersah and others. On Saturday, April 29th Kabir will bring his hip hop party to The Bowery Poetry Club – 308 Bowery, New York, NY along with label-mate L. I.F. E. Long, DJ Synapse, Elemental Zazen, and other special guests.

Kabir has recently joined a new group created by the Mayor’s Office in Boston called, “Mayor Menino’s Hip Hop Roundtable,” addressing an increase in youth gun violence in and around. He runs workshops called “Hip hop as Education” at many private and public schools throughout the northeast. These workshops are designed to teach the youth of today about the positive power of music and hip hop and to encourage these students to find healthy ways to express themselves, while being respectful and true to the art.

“Peaceful Solutions” will be distributed thru Ryko Distribution and will be available initially in most major retail outlets throughout the northeast.

Kabir’s Biography:

Kabir is an independent rapper, singer and producer from London. His music brews a robust blend of raw flow and message-oriented lyrics with unusual beats and soulful melodies. He currently lives in Cambridge, MA, and performs regularly at colleges and clubs around the Northeast. Kabir has performed alongside a wide variety of musical giants such as The Roots, Wyclef Jean, Talib Kweli, Lyrics Born, Common, Soulive, Maceo Parker and Galactic.

Kabir’s first self-produced album "Cultural Confusion" (featuring Mr. Lif, Virtuoso, & Esoteric) was released in 2001 and independently sold approximately 3000 units. “Cultural Confusion” is a multi-layered concept album with raw beats, real rhymes and instrumental interludes. Several songs on the record reveal Kabir’s personal struggles with his own multi-racial identity, while others take a broader view of cultures and the conflicts between people.

Kabir’s second album, “Fuel for the Fire” (Uncle Trouble Music) was released in August of 2003. For this album Kabir again called upon the services of some of Boston’s hottest MCs including: Esoteric, Virtuoso, Shuman, and III Kings. A number of talented singers also contributed to this album such as: Amayo (Antibalas Afro-Beat Orchestra), Lady K (Red Pill), and Ajahni (Vibewise). Kabir produced many of the tracks on this album himself, and a number of guest producers also put their stamp on the record. “Fuel for the Fire” is about the way people live and the emotions that inspire us to do what we do. Each song on the record represents a different influence that affects us.

Kabir’s new album, “Peaceful Solutions,” is due out on April 25th and is being released in partnership between Uncle Trouble Music and Raptivism Records. Once again Kabir has collaborated with a variety of different artists including Shuman, Ryan Montbleau, and Maria Alexieva on vocals. Many of the tracks on “Peaceful Solutions” are self produced, while others are done in collaboration with some of the same producers that Kabir worked with on, “Fuel for the Fire”. “Peaceful Solutions” will be Kabir’s most widely distributed album.

Kabir currently performs live re-creations of these songs as well as those from “Cultural Confusion” and “Fuel for the Fire” with his band. The band features a rotating lineup of all-star musicians, however, Kabir is always held down by his DJ, Axel Foley on the turntables. Kabir’s band provides the backbone for his live show: an infectious dose of thoughtful, energetic music.

Rayna Gangi starts book tour for "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Gangi's "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause" attracting many disgruntled Toudeau readers.

Daphne, AL (PRWEB) September 6, 2006

On a tour that will cover Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Florida and Alabama, Rayna Gangi, author, holistic health consultant, and therapist, will not only be signing books and discussing her newest release, but already has a long list of anxious readers who have made appointments to see her.

"We'll be at the Stardust," says her publicist. "Rayna is a long time friend of the casino and she wants to say goodbye before they implode it. She also has a large following in Nevada, so it's a good place to start."

"The Stardust hotel and my hosts have always been good to me and book tours can be grueling," says Gangi. "I agree it's a good place to start and I can't wait to discuss this book with people who know or want to know about holistic health. Forget The Cures, Find The Cause is not about miracle cures or the newest vitamin. Readers are already saying they wish this book had come out before Troudeau’s."

The first tour ends back home in Alabama just in time for New Years.
