On April 17, 2010 Iraq War Veteran Troy Yocum took his first step on what will be a 16-month, 7,000-mile hike across the United States. Along the way, he bangs a drum to sound the call to raise $5 million to help military families in need.

Yocum, his SuperDog Emmie and his support staff and RV recently arrived at the Embassy Suites Santa Ana Orange County North Airport, greeted by cheering hotel staff and guests.

Recalling an emotional and rewarding experience, Regina Samy, General Manager of the hotel said, “We were approached to host Troy on his team on Veteran’s Day, which made it even more appropriate to support him on his important journey across America to raise awareness of the need our returning troops face when they get home.”

Yocum established drumhike. com to accept donations and keep his supporters up-to-date on his progress across the country. His mission is to further spread the word that American Heroes are fighting just as hard at home as they do overseas. Yocum and his volunteer team hope to provide a peace of mind and lay the foundation for military families to succeed, connecting with people across the United States to spread the importance of helping our military families.

The staff asked him what he missed most while traveling. His answer? Macaroni and cheese. That night he was treated to an old-fashioned mac and cheese dinner, courtesy of Tim Wagner, the Embassy Suites Santa Ana Food and Beverage Director and James McIver, the hotel’s Chef.

Yocum and Emmie were surprised with hand-packed baskets of healthy (and not so healthy) snacks for both hikers. Additionally, Samy presented Yocum with four gift certificates for a one-night stay at the Embassy Suites - Santa Ana hotel. Yocum would be able to select 4 families of soldiers or supporters that would be re-energized from a one-night getaway from their daily routine.

Veterans are dear to Lisa Rowe, Director of Human Resources for the hotel, who spearheaded the special event, “I too have a son who served in the Army and came home from Iraq disabled and not able to ever work again, so I know what Troy is seeing out there and how our soldiers need help.”

AAHA Releases First-Of-Its-Kind Cancer Book for Pet Owners

DENVER—Veterinarians are treating a growing number of pets with cancer each year. According to the Morris Animal Foundation, cancer is the number one killer of dogs and cats, as well as the top concern of pet owners. Cancer can undoubtedly be one of the most challenging and emotionally upsetting of diseases that pet owners will face. However, it is also the most curable of chronic diseases. With treatments ranging from surgery to chemotherapy and radiation therapy, there are more options for pets and their owners than ever before.

Individuals who face the diagnosis of cancer in their loved pets have a new resource available to help address their fears. This April, the American Animal Hospital Association Press is releasing Pets Living With Cancer: A Pet OwnerÂ’s Resource. Authored by Robin Downing, DVM, the 154-page book is the first and only book that provides a single resource for owners of pets that have been diagnosed with cancer.

After confronting a cancer diagnosis in her dog, Murphy, Dr. Downing found there was no single source for all of the questions she faced. Her resulting book provides a resource that leads pet owners through treatment and care. Written with the positive but realistic view that cancer does not always mean death, Dr. Downing asks many questions confronted by pet owners and answers them in a comprehensive and caring manner.

A native of Hong Kong, Dennis studied western cooking at Haking Wong Technical Institute for a year before starting out at W’s Entrecote. “I prepared cold food—appetizers, salads, canapés, that sort of thing,” he recalls. “I started preparing oysters, and seem to have a knack for it. Then, my boss put me at the oyster bar when he saw that I could handle them well.”

As the Oyster Specialist within Sheraton Hong KongÂ’s Oyster and Wine Bar, Dennis oversees everything related to oysters. This includes ordering them from the choicest locations and making sure they are prepared properly, as well as helping out in the kitchen when required.

Dennis stresses the importance of obtaining oysters depending on the season—during the winter months, they are best from Europe or the United States, while in the summer, the freshest oysters are from Australia or South Africa. “When oysters are not in season, they are not as strong and healthy,” he explains. “It takes time for them to get here, and there can be lots of wastage if the oysters do not survive the trip.”

Although oysters are considered a delicacy, many people either love them or hate them. “People have strong feelings towards oysters,” admits Dennis. “Many try them for the first time at a buffet, and may not have had a good experience as a result. The danger is when they are pre-shucked at a buffet, the quality may be affected. Here at Sheraton Hong Kong, the oysters are exposed to the air for as little time as possible.”

“I prefer a salty oyster myself,” he continues. “These come from Europe, where the cold current keeps the oysters’ salt content up. But this is a matter of personal preference. I think champagne or white wine match oysters best. As for sauces and garnishes, I recommend adding nothing at all to them, to let their flavor come out naturally. Or, perhaps a little lemon and black pepper. We also have a vinagrette and cocktail sauce.”

Guests find the causal atmosphere of the Oyster and Wine Bar perfect for indulging in seafood delicacies. “The most unique aspect is our service style,” Dennis says. “We really get to know our guests, and take pride in treating them with respect. Lots of Hong Kong people can be very business-like and commercial. When they are here, they can relax in the knowledge we will take care of them.”

Trainees from MediSend’s Fall 2010 Biomedical Repair Training Program recently spent the morning touring Baylor Health Care System’s flagship hospital in downtown Dallas, as a prelude to an upcoming internship. The trainees were filled with awe as they toured molecular medicine areas, an ER and ICU in a modern US hospital. In 2008, Baylor Health Care System joined MediSend in its mission to improve healthcare conditions in some of the world’s poorest countries. Since then, Baylor has provided professional internships as part of the MediSend Biomedical Repair Training Program curriculum.

The internship is always a highly anticipated portion of the MediSend program, offering the trainees hands-on experience with biomedical professionals in state-of-the-art clinical environments at Baylor facilities. On their recent visit, the trainees were excited to see photos of former MediSend trainees with Baylor staff on the walls of the Baylor Biomedical Department, and anticipate the day when their photos will also hang in the gallery.

"The internship is a meaningful experience for both the trainees and Baylor staff," says veteran biomed Ken Maddock, Vice President, clinical engineering and telecommunications services, at Baylor Health Care System, Dallas, “It is that rare opportunity for individuals from completely different cultures to connect and have an impact on each others’ lives. MediSend is making a real difference in the future of the trainees’ communities and we are proud to be a part of their mission.”

Since 2007, MediSend has returned over sixty professionally trained biomedical repair technicians to their home-country hospitals, many of whom are the first such professionals in the country. Trainees from Kazakhstan, Chad, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Cameroon and Nigeria are currently participating in the program at the Elisabeth Dahan Humanitarian Center, MediSend’s global headquarters in Dallas.

“Graduates of the MediSend Biomedical Repair Training Program return home to help strengthen healthcare in their hospitals, and with the knowledge and professionalism to become leaders in their communities. The eye camp, part of the organization's Sight Restoration and Blindness Prevention Project, will provide eye treatment to more than 1,000 disadvantaged patients. In addition, 60 patients will receive free cataract surgery (http://www. touchingsoulsintl. org/) with lens implant. The eye camp will be held in Maizkhapon Union Parishad Office, Nilganz, Bangladesh.

The 60 patients selected for free cataract surgery will be taken to Mymensingh Eye Hospital and to receive treatment and lens implant. On the third day of the campaign, all patients will be brought back to Maizkhapon Union Parishad Office. A second eye camp will take place on June 23 at a district location to be determined.

A large number of individuals in Bangladesh are cataract blind, a condition that is curable in most cases. However, for many Bangladeshis, cataract surgery is very expensive. As a result, many who are cataract blind may remain blind throughout their lives. Since Touching Souls International began its eye sight and blindness prevention project in 2005, the organization has performed 445 cataract surgeries with lens implant free of charge for the poor people of Kishoreganj District of Bangladesh. In addition, more than 7,600 patients have received eye screening and treatment as part of the program. From this year Touching Souls International will provide their eye camp in different districts of Bangladesh.

Touching Souls International (http://www. touchingsoulsintl. org/aboutus. html) is also planning to hold a cleft-lip camp in Kuliarchar, Bangladesh. The organization is currently seeking 20 cleft-lip patients for treatment during this camp.

Cleft-lips and cleft-palates are a major problem in Bangladesh and other developing countries. Individuals with a cleft-lip of cleft-palate are unable to eat or speak properly, often resulting in lives of isolation filled with the pain and shame of being deemed socially unacceptable. Touching Souls International helps by providing free reconstructive surgery for children and adults with cleft-lip or cleft-palate. Since 2001, the organization has performed 36 cleft-lip camps, each one providing free cleft-lip surgeries (http://www. touchingsoulsintl. org/projects. html) for 15 to 70 disadvantaged patients.

The now famous oil spill that President Obama dubbed “an assault on our shores” is in its 56th day with no end in sight. British Petroleum has made numerous attempts to plug the leak but all have met with failure. More recently, they sought to saw a piece of the damaged pipe off. After the blade got stuck for a short time, they were able to place a cap on the leak. However, the live camera feed 5,000 feet beneath the sea shows oil continuing to gush at an alarming rate and makes many in the affected areas feel helpless. It is now considered the worst oil spill in U. S. History.

Michael Freedland says he’s sure that people will use the spill for political fodder but he says he will leave that to the politicians to debate. “We are concerned about the businesses and people that might be losing their homes and their livelihoods as well as the chemicals having a detrimental effect on their health, safety and well being,” said Freedland. According to the duo, they recently opened an office in the Florida Keys where clients have already begun to retain them. Now, they have been retained by clients throughout the Panhandle and the Florida Keys, and will make their presence felt there.

Freedland and Russo are no strangers to taking on big companies. In 2009, they settled a whistleblower lawsuit with pharmaceutical giant, Eli Lilly for $1.4 Billion (Civil Action #03943). It was the first settlement of its kind to exceed $1 Billion. Just as recent as this past January, they were involoed in another whistleblower case against AstraZeneca, who paid $520 million to resolve the government’s suit against them for off-lable marketing of the popular anti-psychotic drug, Seroquel (Civil Action #04-3479; US District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania). To date, Freedland Russo has been instrumental in governmental whistleblower suits that have recovered in excess of $2.5 billion to the government and states of the US.

“Filing these suits won’t be easy, and at some point when the suits get contentious, BP will no doubt push back hard, but we are in this for the long haul,” stated Russo. “We know what it takes to stay the course and we are committed to see this through,” Freedland added. Analysts are now reporting the price tag for the oil spill is over $40 Billion and growing daily. For the fourth year in a row, the HensonFuerst Cycling Team is raising funds to help support the ADA's mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
