Cambridge University Press Adopts Giant Panda to Build Closer Links with China

Cambridge University Press Adopts Giant Panda to Build Closer Links with China

Cambridge University Press has adopted a giant panda at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Foundation in China, in a bid to build closer working links with the country and to help protect this endangered species. This is the first time a publisher has been granted access to a giant panda in this way.

(PRWEB) November 22, 2010

Cambridge University Press has adopted a giant panda at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Foundation in China, in a bid to build closer working links with the country and to help protect this endangered species. This is the first time a publisher has been granted access to a giant panda in this way.

Chief Executive Stephen Bourne, other members of staff from Cambridge’s offices and senior members of the Chinese State Council Information Office were all present at the adoption ceremony of the panda, named ‘Jian Qiao’, which can be loosely translated as ‘Cambridge’ in some Chinese dialects.

The association with Jian Qiao will help to raise the profile of the Cambridge Young Learners’ course books published for Chinese school children. As part of the adoption, a new web site will also be set up where children can follow the progress of Jian Qiao as she grows up.

The adoption of Jian Qiao also forms part of a wider conservation and climate change programme at the Press. Cambridge works with The Wildlife Trust in the UK to support them in their work, and staff are given paid time off to volunteer for charitable or environmental causes.

Giant pandas are native to China and they are among the world’s most endangered species. A 2007 report by the Chinese State Forestry Commission found that there were fewer than 2,000 giant pandas living in the wild today, and 239 pandas living in captivity in China.

Cambridge has a history of collaborating with the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Foundation. The Foundation’s Director, Professor Zhang Zhihe, was one of the expert contributors to the Cambridge book Giant Pandas - Biology, Veterinary Medicine and Management.

Cambridge also has a strong tradition of publishing about China, including titles in the 30-strong Cultural China series, as well as a growing presence in the English Language Teaching publishing market in the country.

Chief Executive of Cambridge University Press, Stephen Bourne, said: “Given the importance of giant pandas to China, this adoption is a symbol of our strategy to work with the Chinese government to build bridges between China and the West. We are also one of the world’s leading publishers of the full debate on climate change, so it is part of a wider commitment to do all we can to protect the environment.

“I believe our adoption of Jian Qiao speaks volumes about the kind of organisation that Cambridge University Press is, and the importance that we place on being a responsible member of the communities in which we operate. For us, the adoption means a duty to support the care of Jian Qiao during her lifetime, which in turn will help support the important work of the Foundation in Chengdu, and it will strengthen our links with China. For Jian Qiao, it means she can look forward to receiving the best start in life and, as befits a Cambridge panda, a very bright future!”

Madame Wu Wei, the Deputy Director General of the Third Bureau in the State Council Information Office of China, said: “2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity and this adoption by Cambridge University Press demonstrates their care for nature; they set a very good example for environmental protection.”

Jian Qiao was born in August 2010, weighing 153 grams. Now weighing roughly four kilograms, she is doing well and has a healthy appetite.

Notes to Editors:

High resolution photos of Jian Qiao the panda are available.

Fry Communications Chooses Pro-Mail

Fry Communications Chooses Pro-Mail

When Fry Communications, an integrated communications company in southern Pennsylvania, started looking for a software solution to work with their legacy system, their goal was to find a system that would help them to automate and manage their growing direct mail and fulfillment operations efficiently. After comparing their options, they chose The Pro-Mail® System.

Rocky Hill, CT (PRWEB) July 30, 2009

When Fry Communications, an integrated communications company in southern Pennsylvania, started looking for a software solution to work with their legacy system, their goal was to find a system that would help them to automate and manage their growing direct mail and fulfillment operations efficiently. After comparing their options, they chose The Pro-Mail® System.

Fry Communications serves a number of markets, including healthcare, automotive aftermarket, retail, book publishers, telecommunications providers, and government. To stay ahead of the curve, they're pursuing new ways to expand their business segments. They've dedicated one of their five facilities in PA to a full direct mail and traditional and digital fulfillment operation. The goal is to take on new lines of business, lock in repeat customers, and increase revenues with this new venture.

What Fry needed was a comprehensive solution that could work along with their proprietary system to manage their growing direct marketing and fulfillment business. They had heard of Pro-Mail from several contacts in the print industry and other local companies that use that system. Pro-Mail's reputation as a fully integrated solution made it a perfect match for Fry's growing business. Fry will use Pro-Mail in conjunction with their legacy system, creating various touch-points to pass data between each application.

"As the marketplace evolves, businesses today are finding that they need an integrated solution that can handle the needs of their printing, mailing, and fulfillment operations in one unified system," Denise S. Lunden, President, Software Marketing Associates, Inc. (SMA) says. "The Pro-Mail System was designed to do just that."

Having both The Pro-Mail Fulfillment Solution and Business Management Solution in place allows Fry Communications to penetrate new market segments and take on new lines of business. They will look to the system to provide more customer facing features, as well as improve operational efficiencies. Implementation and training on both systems are currently underway. Senior members of Fry's staff have been working closely with SMA on configuring the system to meet their needs. Additionally, an SMA support specialist will be onsite in June to assist Fry's team with further training and implementation.

Since 1981, Software Marketing Associates, Inc. (SMA) has developed and enhanced the Pro-Mail System, a powerful suite of software solutions designed specifically for organizations that provide fulfillment and direct mail services. The Pro-mail System is comprised of two distinct software solutions: The Business Management solution and The Fulfillment Solution. The Business Management Solution enables direct marketing companies to manage all aspects of their business; the Fulfillment System gives companies the capability to manage their client's literature, premium, and merchandise fulfillment programs. For more information, call (860) 721-8929 or visit www. sma-promail. com.

Located in Mechanicsburg, PA, Fry Communications has been in business since 1934. Five Mistakes Pet Owners Will Make This Holiday Season--And How to Avoid Them

Five Mistakes Pet Owners Will Make This Holiday Season--And How to Avoid Them

Pet Sitters International provides five tips to help pet owners avoid common holiday mistakes made each year.

King, NC (PRWEB) December 18, 2007

Pet Sitters International (http://www. petsit. com), the world's largest educational association for professional pet sitters, representing 7,900 pet-sitting businesses, offers five tips that will help well-intended pet owners avoid some of the most common mistakes pet parents make during the holidays. Incorporating these simple pet-friendly strategies into your plans will help ensure a joyous holiday for pets and people alike:

Waiting until the last minute to book a pet sitter

Whether it is holiday travel, a day at grandma's or simply an extended shopping trip---something will inevitably keep you away from your home and pets during the holidays. For pet owners with holiday plans, time is running out to book a professional pet sitter. Professional pet sitters often begin booking for the holidays two to three months in advance. Waiting until the last minute to try to find a pet sitter may result in missed events with family and friends or having to rely on someone that may not be the best provider for your pet.

PSI offers its free Pet Sitter Locator (http://www. petsit. com/locate/) to pet owners wanting to find the best care for their pets during the holiday season. The ZIP code-driven search tool offers enhanced features, enabling pet owners to conduct a criteria-based search in less than one minute. Discriminating pet owners can search PSI's database of nearly 8,000 independent professional pet-sitting businesses for custom-tailored services ranging from daily dog walks to caring for pets with special needs. Users can refine their searches even further by specifying credentials such as bonding, liability insurance and pet first-aid training. PSI also offers a one of a kind Pet Sitter Interview (http://www. petsit. com/content16.html) Checklist to help pet owners evaluate their pet's caregiver.

Assuming everyone loves your pet as much as you do

Resist the temptation to bring Fido or Fluffy with you to family gatherings and other social functions. Even if your pet is a "perfect angel," for persons with allergies, animal-related phobias or small children, your pet's presence may be as appreciated as a re-gifted fruitcake.

For pets, the combination of strange surroundings, rambunctious children and an over-stimulated palate is a recipe for disaster. During the holidays, pets can require more attention than usual. At holiday functions, children are often the ones wanting to provide it. Unsolicited attention or an innocent attempt to give a treat to a pet can result in bites, scratches or even a trip to the emergency room.

According to PSI President and Pet Sitting For Profit author Patti Moran, pets are happier and experience less stress when they remain at home. "Hiring a professional pet sitter to care for your animal companion is one of the best gifts you can give your pet this holiday season," states Moran. "A professional pet sitter alleviates the dilemma of inconveniencing family and friends and allows your pet to stay in its normal environment and routine."

For pet owners, the gift comes from knowing their fur children are receiving quality care from someone who understands the needs of their pets.

Decorating without considering your pets

Pet owners should always decorate with their pets in mind---securing, limiting or even removing items that pose the greatest risks. Candles, fragile or small ornaments, tinsel, and a seemingly endless list of common holiday items make this time of year one of the most dangerous for pets.

Plants

Forego traditional floral decorations such as poinsettia, Christmas rose, holly, hibiscus and the berries of mistletoe. These plants are toxic to pets. For a list of other toxic plants, pet owners are encouraged to review the list found at ASPCA. org (http://www. ASPCA. org)

Christmas Trees

Christmas trees present a hazard to pets because the water can be poisonous if ingested. Pet owners should always cover the base of the tree so pets cannot access the water. It is also important to secure the tree to a wall to prevent toppling. Place ornaments on the upper two-thirds of the tree or out of your pet's normal line of sight to reduce unwanted interaction with wires, hooks and ornaments.

Decorations

Pets should never be left alone in a decorated room. Small ornaments and tinsel should be kept out of "paw's reach" to avoid choking or internal injury. Because pets have a penchant for chewing, items such as Christmas lights and other wire-based electrical decorations should be used sparingly. Candles should only be used when pets are secured or are closely being monitored. When away from your home, secure your pets away from these items. As an added precaution, unplug lights and motorized decorations.

Treating pets to people food

With the holidays comes the consumption of an inordinate amount of fatty, salty, sugary and calorically dense foods. Allowing pets to indulge in these same holiday excesses is not only bad for their health; it can lead to digestion problems and numerous other health issues.

As a rule of thumb, never feed people food to pets---especially treats. Common holiday foods like chocolate, raisins and macadamia nuts can cause serious physical and internal harm to a pet. Stray wrappers from candies can also be a problem since there is a potential for choking and/or intestinal blockage, if ingested.

Since removing the plethora of temptations is largely impractical, PSI suggests securing your pet in a "safe room" away from guests and potential hazards. After the festivities, be sure to properly discard all food scraps and trash before letting your pet back into the other areas of your home.

Forgetting to tell Santa about your pet

He's made his list. He's checked it twice. Nevertheless, forgetting to gift your pet is naughty...not nice. Asking Santa to drop off something special for your pet is not only thoughtful, but practical as well. Giving gifts to your pet reinforces the idea that they too are an important part of the family. What's more, giving your pet the right gift---a new chew toy for example---will help lessen your pet's interest in Billy's Baseball cards and Susie's new Barbie® I can be...™ Pet Sitter play set.

For pet-specific gift ideas, PSI recommends visiting the PSIStoreOnline (http://www. psistoreonline. com/).

DealMax Knows a Thing or Two About New Neighbors

DealMax Knows a Thing or Two About New Neighbors

AP9 DealMax provides members with irresistible deals to shop more and spend less.

Norwalk, CT (PRWEB) February 14, 2008

Along with all the wrapping, carrying and packing up needed to leave a well-known place, moving to a new city or neighborhood has its own challenges. DealMax (SM) (http://www. dealmax-program. com/DealMax_qanda. html), a premier membership discount program from Adaptive Marketing LLC (http://ap9consumergateway. typepad. com/ap9_articles/ap9_dealmax/index. html), knows that being "the new kid on the block" can be a bit intimidating, but it's also sure that moving into a new space can be an adventure.

Getting to know the new community takes a bit of effort and some patience, since the routine of the whole family is altered and a new one has to be put in place. For the "old residents," new people represent a change as well; that's why they're usually curious and want to know more about the new family. Nonetheless, they're all going to share the neighborhood. So what to do to make this experience a smooth one for those involved?

Common sense and good people skills are a good way to start. Along with these, AP9*DealMax (http://www. prweb. com/releases/AP9_DealMax/DealMax/prweb679713.htm) has put together a list of simple things both sides can do to make the transition a little easier:

The newcomers:
Break the ice. Introduce the family to next-door neighbors when they pass by or when they're outside and don't look busy doing something else. Even if there's no time to stop and chat, wave and smile to new neighbors when you get the chance. This will make a wonderful first impression. Get involved in the community. It's wise to do some research before moving into the neighborhood to see what kind of communal activities happen regularly. Joining a place of worship (church, synagogue, etc.) is also a great idea to get to know new people. Be polite. Yes, it's good to know what goes on in the neighborhood, but asking too many questions can be considered rude. "Gossiper" is not a good label for new neighbors to acquire.

The neighbors:
Make newcomers feel welcome. It's a nice gesture to bring over water bottles or light snacks on moving day. Provide neighborhood information. The location of a 24-hour pharmacy, the nearest bakery, pizza parlor or grocery store and even the closest beauty parlor are excellent tips to give new neighbors. Make a short list, and drop it off on a quick stop. Provide a little bit of help. Offer to bring the packing boxes to the local recycling center or, if the newcomers have a pet, point out the other homes where there are dogs or other animals they can befriend. Don't gossip. It's very bad taste to talk about the old homeowners or other people in the neighborhood. Let the newcomers form their own opinions.

AP9 DealMax (http://www. dealmax-program. com/800-548-0685_DealMax. html) members also make their move a lot easier by using their member-only benefits to save money. To minimize their costs while enjoying their new home, smart consumers look to DealMax.

QA InfoTech Announces Top Trends in Software Quality for 2011

QA InfoTech Announces Top Trends in Software Quality for 2011

After a Progressive 2010, Quality Plays an Even Stronger Role in Software Development; Companies and Consumers Both Win

Farmington Hills, MI, U. S.A. (PRWEB) January 12, 2011 —

QA InfoTech, a 400-person independent quality assurance and software testing firm with five testing Centers of Excellence in the United States and India, today unveiled the top trends in software quality for 2011. Software quality is expected and demanded by consumers now more than ever. In 2010, it became rare for any software company to skip quality assurance altogether. This upcoming year, quality will be integrated at earlier stages in the product development lifecycle, and metrics and test automation will play greater roles.

“Software companies have had to dramatically change their approach to quality to create the more usable and higher quality products that consumers are now demanding,” said Mukesh Sharma, CEO of QA InfoTech Worldwide. “As a result, customers are more satisfied and satisfied customers mean greater revenue for software companies— everyone wins.”

Some of the top trends in software quality are:

1. Quality is no longer an afterthought in product development, but rather a core part of the process from the outset. Quality assurance engineers are increasingly helping to plan for quality and create timelines of relevant metrics at the outset of product development rather than being the “defect finders” later in the process. By providing insight and planning for quality in the early stages, including how to avoid common quality mistakes and how to make products more testable, quality assurance engineers deliver significant positive impacts on products. With the early integration of software quality engineers, products will increasingly be delivered on-time and at the quality-level consumers demand.

2. Independent quality assurance testing is a form of risk mitigation for projects. Companies understand that software development creates a business risk, whether the end-product is for third parties or for use internally. By looking at quality throughout the product development process and meeting important test metrics set up by independent quality assurance teams, companies mitigate their business risks of product failure, customer dissatisfaction and project cancellation. Software quality assurance has become another form of business insurance.

3. There will be less reliance on formal tools and instead a greater use of frameworks built using open source. Increasingly, quality testing frameworks are being developed using open source tools such as Selenium and JMeter. Formal tools from companies such as IBM and Hewlett Packard are still being used, but are being augmented, and sometimes replaced, by test automation frameworks created using open source. This brings down testing costs for companies, sometimes by hundreds of thousands of dollars, and often these savings are passed on to consumers.

4. Companies are setting up test labs in the cloud rather than building them in-house. By using the cloud, companies can test high loads and eliminate costs associated with owning and maintaining hardware. Virtualized images of configurations are increasingly being used to increase efficiency and reduce set-up costs. The result is an ability to test more platform combinations, faster reporting and fewer test machines that ultimately end up in landfills.

“In 2011, there will be a focus on software quality like never before,” continued Sharma. “Consumers are demanding it more than ever and software companies are discovering the positive impact quality has on their bottom-line. It is very exciting time in software quality!”

QA InfoTech Independent Quality Assurance Services

By providing end-to-end software testing, and using its proprietary testing frameworks developed using open source technology, QA InfoTech (an ISO 9001:2008 certified company) reduces costs and time-to-market for its clients’ products in addition to improving overall product quality. Offering comprehensive and world-class testing facilities that can scale at short notice using virtualization and cloud computing technologies, and that include state-of-the-art hardware, server infrastructure, mobility labs and high-bandwidth Internet-connectivity, QA InfoTech can take on software testing projects of just about any size.
