With a large percentage of women plagued by lower back pain during pregnancy, Drs. Carol DeFranca and Scott Chapman, the husband and wife chiropractic team at Norwell Chiropractic Spine and Sports Rehab, announce chiropractic care for moms-to-be.

According to Dr. DeFranca, a Board Certified Orthopedic Specialist and Chiropractor as well as mother of two, “Chiropractic care for low back pain is a well-established and safe treatment method, which is especially good news since chiropractic care works by natural means without the use of pain medications.”

She continued, “Pregnant women experience back pain due primarily to the body changes that occur during the pregnancy process, many of the muscles, joints, ligaments and nerves of the lower spine come under a great deal of increased biomechanical strain. In some instances, this leads expectant moms to limit activities due to pain.”

Diagnosis and Treatment

Norwell Chiropractic Spine and Sports Rehab takes special care to accommodate pregnant womenÂ’s special needs. The type of back treatment depends upon diagnosis of the cause of pain. There are a number of safe, effective hands-on treatments that will help ease pain including gentle stretches, manipulations and mobilizations of the strained soft tissues to ease restrictions to movement.

There are also many types of exercises that can relieve lower back pain. Some exercises work to decrease tension in muscles while others can help in strengthening muscles to hold your body in a more ideal alignment. Norwell Chiropractic may suggest a gentle exercise program and will outline specific exercises to patients.

What to Expect

“At your initial visit, we obtain a thorough health history and examine your back. Patients should expect their first visit to be about an hour long and that we will spend plenty of time answering any questions. Then we’ll explain the cause of your pain and how we will alleviate it,” noted Dr. DeFranca.
