A recent survey of small to medium-sized companies by consulting firm, Critical Metrics, LLC, reveals that one in five businesses report that employees do not understand the companyÂ’s goals and objectives. Additional analysis reveals the importance of understanding business goals and objectives. Companies with employees who understand the goals and objectives are significantly more likely to report having employees who are committed to the success of the company (85%) than those companies with employees who do not understand where the company is headed (39%).

Communicating where the company is headed provides a framework for employees to understand how their day-to-day responsibilities fit into the big picture. When employees understand what the larger organization is trying to do, they are more likely to be committed to helping the company get there. In smaller companies, with scarcer resources and support systems, employee commitment to success is a critical factor to business success. Companies who do not know how well employees understand company goals and objectives run the risk of employing a workforce that is disconnected from management and not committed to its success.

About the Survey

The survey, conducted over the summer of 2004, included responses from management and human resources professionals from 77 U. S. companies with 100 to 3000 employees. Participating companies came from a cross section of industries including high technology, manufacturing, financial services and healthcare. The survey focused on issues related to attraction and retention, workforce effectiveness, innovation and creativity and revenue generation and expense management.
