Physician recruiting firm LocumTenens. com has announced its expansion into the high demand specialties of internal medicine, family practice, pediatrics and hospitalists - specialties often referred to collectively as primary care. Traditionally a niche agency specializing in physician and CRNA staffing for anesthesiology, psychiatry, radiology and surgery specialties, LocumTenens. com has added the primary care specialties to better serve client needs.
According to the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics primary care represents over 35% of active physicians, comprising the largest category of physician specialties. Despite the relatively large population of doctors, this is also the area with some of the greatest need for more physicians.
Leaders from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the American College of Physicians (ACP) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) recently reported to Congress that the number of medical school graduates choosing a primary care specialty is at an all-time low of 17% - at a time when demand for primary care is growing rapidly.
