ChildLab is a service of ChildrenÂ’s Hospital located in Columbus, OH. The specialty outreach lab serves the entire state and surrounding states because the laboratory testing needs of children are very different from adults. ChildLab offers more than 1,000 different clinical lab and surgical pathology pediatric tests. “We had been looking for an outreach system for about a year and a half,” said Cheryl Hamon, Reference Laboratory Manager at ChildLab. “We serve a very wide outreach area and we needed a system that could provide connectivity to our doctors and hospitals in this large region. LabWorks has been able to provide this connectivity for us. In addition, with the checks and balances their order/entry system provides, we get the “cleanest” orders possible from our doctors,” Ms. Hamon added.
“We also needed a very flexible system that could be modified for our pediatric patients,” said Renee Cuevas-Downs, Reference Laboratory Coordinator at ChildLab. “Some modifications were significant like changing the date of birth to days instead of years and reference ranges in days instead of months. However, others like adjusting the size of specimen labels to fit the smaller containers needed for a child’s test volume were small, but important. Another important factor in our selection process was that LabWorks integrated with our web site (www. childlab. com) extremely well,” Ms. Cuevas-Down continued.
