MemCheck, an easy to use online application that allows people to check, monitor, and enhance their own cognitive performance, monitor changes in reaction time, and display the results graphically, is now available from cognitivelabs. com. First, visitors can take a free memory test that shows them how they compare with over a million other people.

As tens of millions of people in the U. S. become more concerned with preserving and enhancing their minds and memories, along with maintaining their physical health through exercise, MemCheck becomes a valuable tool to measure changes in mental performance.

“We have developed a scale for the mind that is effective in keeping track of subtle changes that can indicate either instances of cognitive impairment or cases of cognitive enhancement due to other activities, such as diet, exercise, and gaming. If you can’t track it, you can’t take action,” said CEO Michael Addicott. Validated through seven research studies at institutions ranging from Stanford, UC-Irvine, and Scripps in California to the University of Western Ontario and Swinburne University in Australia, the studies have focused on the intersection of cognitive impairment, genetic markers of Alzheimer’s disease such as the APOEe4, and also used techniques such as MRI for corroboration of findings.

The recently announced University of Chicago studies (March 11 issue of Cell) on physical and cognitive exerciseÂ’ impact on the mindÂ’s fitness provide further third party support, not to mention testimonials ranging from scientists, physicians, top software engineers, executive managers, active aging and retired people, and even baseball and tennis stars in the U. S. who attribute increased focus and concentration ability to the software.

“One of the articles on Cognitive Labs that reviewed MemCheck ran in Slate. The reviewer, also a leading author, found that not only was there an increase in cognitive baseline performance from the mental exercises and games offered in our easy to use dashboard, but there also was a unique capability to track the impact of third party products. For example, if I have a cup of coffee today, or play another game like Halo, how does that impact my cognitive performance?”

Growth has been largely organic, by word of mouth, blogs, and through search. Now that the company has developed a foothold with more than a million registered users – all of whom are concerned with cognitive performance, along with solid revenue growth, the company is branching out into areas dictated by its customers and users. The company is actively working on MemCheck extensions for the mobile web and interactive TV markets – where large partners have initiated discussions at the request of their subscribers.

“Our goal is to reach 20 million users on mobile, TV, and the Internet, which will truly bring the ability to track and monitor the mind to everyone and enable people to take charge of their cognitive health for their own peace of mind and to give caregivers and healthcare providers an early warning system, or radar, for cognitive changes. On the back-end we are building the world’s largest database on individual cognitive performance – a snapshot of cognitive performance that follows people over time and creates a map for researchers. We anticipate years of valuable research work in just assessing the data we have captured, like cataloging and analyzing the results of an archaeological expedition, and creating custom-tailored products that leverage the large quantity of information. For example, what kind of job or short-term consulting project will a 71-year old in Palo Alto, CA want, and what would they be best suited for? What are there dietary and exercise needs? That’s the future. It’s not just capturing data, it is knowing what to look for before the database is set up that creates the value.”
