Flad Architects Awarded Livermore Valley Open Campus Master Plan
Flad Architects has been selected for a master planning effort to provide a detailed “road map” defining all aspects of the future 110-acre Livermore Valley Open Campus development. This road map will integrate recommendations regarding the development of programs, site planning, and real estate development planning, as well as maintenance and operations planning.

Flad Architects has been selected by the Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration and the Office of Science to complete a master site planning study for a new, collaborative science and technology campus in Livermore, California.
The approximately 110-acre development will be known as the Livermore Valley Open Campus (LVOC) and is a joint venture with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory. The LVOC will create a shared, open campus between the two adjacent facilities to connect lab scientists and their discoveries with academia and private industry to accelerate research and commercialization of technologies in a research park setting.
“By leveraging the groundbreaking research of our nuclear security labs through private sector collaborations, we will bring breakthroughs to the market faster and find new solutions to the energy problem,” said Energy Secretary Steven Chu.
Under Phase 1 Flad will address the need for architectural and engineering services and work closely with LVOC leadership to provide a detailed “road map” defining all aspects of future development for the new campus. The plan will integrate recommendations with respect to programs development, site planning, real estate development planning, and maintenance and operations planning.
Nearly 200 scientists from around the world already visit Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory each year and hundreds more would likely do so once the open campus is in place.
