Global Security Intelligence Limited was awarded a contract as part of a consortium examining social, ethical, and privacy needs in ICT for the elderly. The 8-member consortium are focused upon issues related to the design of new technologies targeted to solve the unique issues faced by the elderly, and how those may help to bridge the digital divide.

The SENIOR (Social, Ethical and Privacy Needs in ICT for Older People: A Dialogue Roadmap) programme launched with the initial meeting on March 3, and was met with a high level of interest and attendance from across the EU. Representatives from the European Commission and other policy makers, academic institutions, and industry gathered at the Albert Brochette Center in Brussels to set the tone for this 24-month support action funded by the EC. More than 80 individuals attended the launch, which will now be followed by a series of more focused workshops over the balance of 2008.
The next event, planned for early June, will focus on exploring a range of issues, including human-ICT interaction, techno-animism, and homeliness, in order to analyze the meaning of ICT and ageing from a socio-anthropological perspective. The framework of the workshop will be designed to give awareness to the wide range of societal and cultural differences, e. g. different family structures, health care models and accessibility to ICTs, while maintaining an overall European perspective.
Additional workshops to be held in 2008 will engage experts across various areas of technological expertise as well as individuals with expertise in ethics, privacy, and legal arenas, and are scheduled for the latter part of the year. These workshops will aid in defining trends within ICT affecting the ageing community, discuss relevant ethical and privacy issues and weigh the trade-offs between privacy, ethics and technological innovation. The topics of the workshops will be focused in five key areas: ubiquitous computing, ubiquitous communication, intelligent user interface, assistive technologies, and adaptive software. A call for papers for experts to join these workshops is expected in the near future.

The Social Ethical and Privacy Needs in ICT for Older People: A Dialogue for Roadmap (SENIOR) is a 2 year support action which aims to provide a systematic assessment using dialogue as the key instrument to evaluate the social, ethical and privacy issues involved in ICT and Ageing. As a result, SENIOR will provide an understanding of how technological trends are responding to the goals of inclusion for the ageing and using lessons learned from those trends, plan strategies for the future to closely link these issues to technology at the design level. SENIOR is funded by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programme, Contract N: 216820.
