Dr. Kent Smith, Co-Director of the Dental Organization for Sleep Apnea, and course instructor for Sleep Breathing Disorders at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, opened SomnoMed’s first Annual Symposium, held in Oahu, Hawaii August 14-16th. His lecture was designed to motivate dentists as they look to integrate the screening for and treatment of sleep disordered breathing in their practices.
“I feel dentistry has a seat at the snoring and sleep apnea table”, said Dr. Smith. “In fact, we might even be considered the gatekeepers, as we see patients on a six-month schedule, and spend at least 45 minutes with Mrs. Jones when she is in the office to get her teeth cleaned. Not only do I feel it is an opportunity, but an obligation for dentists and their clinical team to screen for snoring and sleep apnea.”
“It’s my mission as I speak around the world to implore dentists to work hand in hand with the sleep professionals in their community in an effort to preserve marriages, promote better health and to save lives. I can’t proclaim with enough volume that contrary to sitcoms and comic strips, snoring isn’t sexy!”
