89-Year-Old Great-Grandmother Shows Aging Baby Boomers the Road Ahead
Mavis Cox, an 89-year-old Australian great-grandmother, has shown that age is no barrier to entering the information age. This elderly stateswoman has now started documenting her handicraft experience with her first book entitled "Sewing 101."

A recent Canadian Press release (http://mediresource. sympatico. ca/channel_health_news_detail. asp? channel_id=56&menu_item_id=4&news_id=7237) stated that “The goal for aging baby boomers isn't just to live longer, it's to make the coming years quality ones, and live independently as long as possible.” It went on to say that the first generation of baby boomers will be turning 60 next year.
For many, the prospect of leaving the workforce and having the children off their hands, a new dilemma presents itself! That is, with all this time on their hands that they never had before, have they adequately planned on how they would fill in their days in retirement?
Mavis Cox, an 89-year-old great-grandmother from Mudgee, Australia, could perhaps be an inspiration to these up and coming senior citizens. Having not only lead a fulfilling and active working life, she has continued in the same vein with a long and equally rewarding retirement.
“I’ve always been someone that’s got to be doing something, and keeping my mind active in the process. From the time I was a young girl, and later when raising a family, I would spend my time doing various handicraft activities.”
Mavis has even become known as “The Doll Lady of Mudgee,” since she started out on doll making at the sprightly young age of 69, just 20 years ago! It’s helped keep my mind active and allowed me to maintain a wide circle of friends. I believe this has helped me get to my age and to still be able to enjoy life!”
Not content to just sit on the laurels of her handicraft achievements, Mavis has now released a new e-Book all about sewing (http://www. i-sewing. com) for beginners. “The idea came from a member of the family who suggested that I could use my lifetime of knowledge for others to follow in my own footsteps.”
Even this latest venture has taken Mavis by surprise, “I could never have imagined a few months ago that I would be sharing what I know with the entire world!”
