The Surgical Technology Program at Sanford-Brown Institute (http://www. sbinj. com) in Iselin, New Jersey has earned the top ranking in the “PAE Elite Twenty Program” by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology (http://www. arcst. org/) (ARC-ST). The ARC-ST Program Assessment Exam (PAE) is a mandatory exam given to all students while still active in their Surgical Technology clinical externship just prior to their graduation date. For the 2006-2007 program year, 430 accredited programs were reviewed and more than 7000 students were tested.
Each year, the top 20 programs that finish with the highest median scores as compared to all programs that administered the Program Assessment Exam (PAE) are honored. The PAE Elite Twenty Program certificate acknowledges the great care that Sanford-Brown Institute - Iselin has taken to teach the skills required to those entering this field of precision, awareness and accountability.
“We are proud of faculty instructors,” said Dennis Mascali, president of Sanford-Brown - Iselin, “This accomplishment is a direct reflection of our Surgical Technology department’s commitment and dedication to quality education and with an eye on providing students with a meaningful experience while preparing them for a career in the Surgical Technology profession.”
The Association of Surgical Technologists (http://www. ast. org/) reports that surgical technology is one of the fastest growing professions in the country and it is projected to grow faster than the average of all other occupations through the year 2014 (see citation). A surgical technologist (ST) is an allied health professional who works as part of a surgical team to ensure that the operative procedure is conducted under optimal conditions. The ST assists by preparing the operating room and patients for surgery including transporting them to the operating room; checking vitals and charts and assisting members of the surgical team with gowns and gloves. During the surgery, they may hold retractors, cut sutures, and help count sponges, needles, supplies and instruments making sure that every item is accounted for before sutures are knotted.
