Author Exposes Her Tangled Relationships in Humorous Short Stories

Kansas City, Mo. (Vocus) June 17, 2009

Women, unite! Here is a collection of short stories for anyone who has tumbled into the wrong relationship. In her new book, "A Woman Without a Man Is Like a Fish Without a Bicycle" (published by AuthorHouse (http://www. authorhouse. com/)), Margie Melvin draws from her self-described checkered past to offer a series of humorous snapshots of dating gone wrong.

Melvin begins her book with a heart-to-heart letter to readers. "Come on, admit it," she writes. "Men really are a hilarious breed. I know they've provided me with hours of entertainment."

She then launches into a series of chapters named for each of the types of men that have touched her life--for better or worse. There is "The Cheater," "The Homosexual Man," "The Christian Man," "The Shared Man," "The Caveman," and "The Bachelor," among others.

Each story is a biting confession of offenses Melvin endured. Some, readers have surely experienced. Others seem too crazy to be true. With a healthy dose of humility, Melvin admits her wrongdoing in falling for these men in the first place. She details the chaos her naivety has led her into time after time. She also reveals plenty of stand up moments that will have readers cheering and proud to be women.

"I grew up in a Catholic, military household, which set the foundation for a variety of failed relationships on the way to happily ever after," Melvin writes. "In spite of--or perhaps because of--the way I was raised, I developed a fine-tuned sarcastic sense of humor that's gotten me through some really tough times. I've ended up on this side with my humor and most of my dignity in place. I've developed an appreciation of men, of sorts. Each of my subjects has a special place in my heart."

As proof of Melvin's arrival at a place of peace and appreciation for men, her book ends with a chapter titled "The Perfect Man."

About the Author: At 54 years old, Margie Long has been married four times and divorced three. She is married with two stepdaughters and one grandchild. "A Woman Needs a Man Like a Fish Needs a Bicycle" is her first book.
