UTec to Launch Comprehensive Line of Wide-Format Printer Inks at IPEX
UTec will release a new series of compatible wide format inkjet cartridges at IPEX, the global event for printing technology and publishing, which will be held in Birmingham, from May 18-25.

Union Technology International (MCO) Co., Ltd. The products will debut at IPEX, the global event for printing technology and publishing, which will be held in Birmingham, England, from May 18-25. UTec's new line includes compatible cartridges that are employed by some of today's most popular wide-format printers including hardware from Canon, Epson, Hewlett-Packard, Mimaki, Mutoh, and Roland.
"We are very excited to offer our distributors supplies for wide-format inkjet printers," says Iris Ngo, UTec's general manager. She explains that the current installed base of wide-format equipment remains enormous despite declines in certain segments. "The market is well-established and there is a consistently strong demand for wide-format inks for the production of signage along with other print-for-pay applications," she says.
Owners of commercial print shops have grown reliant on digital technology. Wide-format printers allow shops to do short, customized jobs that provide much better margins than jobs run on an analog device. Margins from digital jobs have been eroding, however, and the market for signage and other graphics have been adversely impacted by the downturn in the economy. "The savings our new line of cartridges will provide will give commercial shops some much needed margin relief," says Ngo. "The cost savings our distributors can offer commercial shops on wide-format consumables are significant and those savings go straight to the shop owner's bottom line."
UTec will offer a wide assortment of dye-based and pigmented aqueous ink sets for machines with either thermal or piezo print heads as well as compatible cartridges with newly formulated eco-solvent inks. The firm plans to offer UV-curable inks in the near future. Ngo says the initial number of cartridges will be extensive and more SKUs are in the pipeline. By year's end, UTec will enter the UV market, which is currently experiencing robust growth. InfoTrends recently released data projecting the worldwide market for UV-curable inkjet hardware and supplies will grow at a compound annual rate of nearly 16% from $1.1 billion in 2008 to $2.33 billion by 2013. "Considering a healthy portion of that $2-billion-plus total will be spent on inks, the UV-curable ink market represents a huge opportunity for UTec. Let's face it, high-quality, non-OEM cartridges with UV inks has been virtually non-existent. With our products, we will change all that," says Ngo confidently.
