WHAT: Green Drinks NYC’s Annual Holiday Party. This year the annual event will focus on a major environmental problem - plastics in the ocean - by having British environmentalist David de Rothschild as the event’s speaker. WHO/WHY: David de Rothschild is an adventurer, environmentalist, and the founder of myoo. com, a group that primarily uses adventure, exploration, and storytelling as a way to give nature a voice. David is recognized as a National Geographic Emerging Explorer, Clean up the World Ambassador, United Nations Environmental Program Climate Hero and a Young Global Leader respectively. Earlier this year, David and a five-person crew sailed the new and unique 60-foot catamaran Plastiki - made buoyant from 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles - from San Francisco, Calif., to Sydney, Australia, on a mission to beat waste by drawing attention to the health of our oceans, in particular the colossal amounts of plastic debris.
The event will benefit in part Sculpt the Future Foundation and The Algalita Marine Research Foundation. Sculpt the Future Foundation was founded in 2006 by David de Rothschild, whose commitment to the environment has sent him to some of the world's most remote and fragile regions in order to bring widespread media attention and solutions to urgent global environmental issues.
The Algalita Marine Research Foundation is a non-profit dedicated to the protection of the marine environment and its watersheds through research, education, and restoration. Captain Charles Moore is the founder of this organization and the person who first discovered the Great Pacific Patch in 1997.
The event also features several booths of local non-profits working on ocean issues such as Surfrider Foundation, Shark Savers
