New York, NY (PRWEB) November 17, 2010
Jon Sands, a native of Cincinnati will be entertaining the audience at the Blue Wisp on November 26th with his Performance Poetry. The show begins at 7:00 PM. The Spoken Word, another term used to describe this art form, is a vibrant and theatrical rendering of poetry which adds a necessary lightning to poetry readings of old.
Jon, who moved to New York City in 2006 to pursue the art, has gained recognition for his message as well as his rendition and fellow poets are heralding his gift. Carlos Andres-Gomez describes Jon as being filled with, “wit, truth, surprise, and always a lot of heart… Jon Sands sneaks up on you when you least expect it… challenges the dusty cynic under your ribcage and dares you to believe.” Jack McCarthy declares, “If you’ve been praying for a poet who can combine the lightning strokes of page poetry with all the panache of the kind of performance that takes absolute possession of a room, your long wait is over: Jon Sands is the answer to your prayers!"
A former resident of Symmes Township, Jon graduated from Sycamore High School in 2001, and was a student at Ohio University. Upon, graduation he packed it up and moved to the big city. His first full collection of poems, The New Clean, will be available in bookstores throughout the country this May.
During the four short years he has called the Big Apple “home” he’s pursued his vision with the same passion that can be heard in his performances. “Don’t bother looking for me. The sign on this door says disturb. It says amaze. It says, be amazing. My whole body’s inside akimbo, ready to make mistakes. To stay. I made you spaghetti, pretty sure we’re the sauce. So it’s just me and you baby, just me and you.”
In addition to a busy performance schedule which has found him speaking to hundreds at universities performance venues, and even penitentiaries throughout North America, he is due to begin a European tour this December. He’s also being commissioned for multiple writing programs throughout New York City. Jon is the Director of Poetry Education Programming at the Positive Health Project, a syringe exchange center in Midtown Manhattan; a CUNY Adjunct Lecturer with York Early College Academy; and a Youth Mentor with Urban Word-NYC. He’s represented New York City multiple times at the national poetry slam, and was the 2010 commencement speaker for the Bronx Academy of Letters.
