Washington, DC (PRWEB) June 29, 2009

The U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has certified 11 more Green Branch® locations of PNC Bank based on environmentally friendly construction and design, increasing its industry-leading total to 66. PNC has built more certified green buildings than any company on Earth.

PNC (NYSE: PNC), whose leadership in Green construction was recognized by the U. S. Patent & Trademark Office when it was granted a registered trademark for the term "Green Branch" in 2007, began its aggressive building program in 2000 with the construction of PNC Firstside Center, the first building certified under LEED® 2.0 in October 2000.

Based in Washington, D. C., the USGBC is the nation's leading coalition of corporations, builders, federal and local agencies working together to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible and healthy places to live and work. The USGBC awards certification based for construction and design.

Starting in 2002, PNC is the first major U. S. bank to design and construct branches based on green building standards.

Features of PNC's Green Branch® locations include:
Recycling: more than 50 percent of the branch is locally manufactured or made from recycled or green materials.

Energy & Water Efficiency: energy usage is reduced 34 percent or more compared to a traditional branch; Water usage is reduced by 4,000 gallons a year.

Pollution Control: construction waste is recycled or salvaged and the cooling system is designed to protect the ozone.

The newly certified Green Branch® locations are in five states, as follows:

Delaware - Fenwick Island (Bayside) Maryland - Germantown; LaPlata (Hawthorne Road) and Waldorf (Berry Road) New Jersey - Emerson; Hackettstown and Montvale Pennsylvania - Wexford (Pine Township) Virginia - Dumfries (Lake Montclair); Fairfax (Fair Lakes) and Woodbridge (Hoadley Road).

In addition, PNC has two major buildings that are certified: The 650,000 square foot Firstside Center in Pittsburgh and the PNC Global Investment Servicing Headquarters in Wilmington, Del., Delaware's first LEED® certified green building.

PNC currently has 11 more branches either soon to be submitted or in process of being certified, with six Green Branch® locations under construction with the goal of opening by the end of 2009.

Two more major green buildings are near completion: Three PNC Plaza in Pittsburgh, which is expected to be the largest mixed use green building in the world when completed in late 2009 and will have numerous LEED certifications, and 800 17th Street PNC Place, regional headquarters for PNC in Washington, D. C., which is scheduled to open in 2010, and is planned to be certified as LEED® Platinum.
