ENVIRONMENTAL EXPERTS URGE HOMEOWNERS AND RENTERS WITH FLOODING OR WATER DAMAGE DURING RECENT STORMS TO BE AWARE OF TOXIC MOLD GROWTH
Alan Environmental Offers Low Cost Home Mold Test Kits and Free Initial Consultations to Residents In Federal Disaster Areas, Including Allen, Noble, Adams, Wells, Whitley, DeKalb and Steuben Counties
Fort Wayne, Ind. (PRWEB) July 14, 2003 Â After more than 10 days of severe storms and flooding, and with 25 Indiana counties now designated as Federal Disaster Areas by President Bush, area residents who have experienced water damage in their homes are now urged to be aware that toxic mold can develop and cause serious health concerns.
ÂThese storms couldnÂt come at a worse time, said Joshua Appleman, president of Alan Environmental. ÂWith the summer heat, toxic mold can reach toxic levels within a matter of days or even hours. Dampness in basements, walls, carpets and wood provides an environment for mold to infest in many areas of the home and it will continue to grow unless steps are taken to eliminate the moisture and repair water damage.
In response to this concern, Alan Environmental is now offering a low-cost mold test kit to help consumers identify if they have a mold problem. Information about mold is available online at www. allencountymold. com. The mold test kits can be order at www. eSafetyAlert. com or by calling 1-800/892-9551. The do-it-yourself test indicates the presence of molds in 48 hours. If mold is detected, Alan Environmental offers a free initial consultation to help residents determine whether additional testing is needed and to make recommendations for remediation of mold damage.
ÂEven a slight amount of water will likely result in mold developing, said Appleman. ÂToxic levels of mold can develop within a few hours, days or even weeks after the initial water damage. Although the consumer can sometimes see the mold, or smell an odor, more often than not, the mold may be out of sight behind walls, under carpets or in the basement or foundation.Â
Scientific research, including a recent report in the New England Journal of Medicine, has found that mold causes medical conditions ranging from allergic reactions, depression, flu-like symptoms, bloody noses, loss of memory and even epileptic-like seizures.
Additional information is available from the Centers for Disease control at www. cdc. gov. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is also available for assistance at 800/621-FEMA (3362). FEMAÂs Website is www. fema. gov. Those affected should notify their insurance company as soon as possible to ensure a proper claim is filed to repair the damage.
Alan Environmental uses EPA approved methodologies for sampling and testing for mold, and uses AIHA-accredited laboratories for microbial and environmental testing reports.
