The 11th Annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study has given the Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago (NOHC) a 5-star rating for total knee replacement. The 2009 healthcare quality ratings analyzed more than 41 million Medicare hospitalization records and found NOHC to be exceptional in knee replacement.
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) October 30, 2008
The Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago (NOHC) has been presented with a five-star rating for total knee replacement surgery by the Eleventh Annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study. In developing its 2009 healthcare quality ratings, HealthGrades analyzed more than 41 million Medicare hospitalization records from 2005 to 2007 at the nation's approximately 5,000 non-federal hospitals.
As part of the nation's most comprehensive, independent analysis of hospital quality, HealthGrades found that patients treated at five-star rated hospitals for nine common procedures are 47 percent less likely to experience a major complication, such as post-operative infections or heart conditions, which can lengthen their hospital stay and increase costs. According to the study, if all Medicare patients had been treated at a top-performing hospital, like the Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago (http://www. neuro-ortho. org/ (http://www. neuro-ortho. org/)), compared to the lowest-performing hospitals during 2005-07, more than 123,000 major complications potentially could have been avoided.
"The study confirmed what we already know," says John Hefferon, MD, director of Orthopedic Services for NOHC, "that our orthopedic doctors are second to none. Our surgeons have been performing knee replacement surgery for over 30 years and we have less than a.01 percent revision rate, which means we get it right virtually every time."
