Kurdistan, the land of an ancient people, is perhaps among a few nations in the world that does not have a national academy. Therefore it was perceived to be a major concern for both Kurdish scientists and Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG.) to establish such an academy, to provide scientific research and promote public awareness about national needs.

Kurdistan Academy of Science (KAS) is a non-profit, non-partisan and non-political organization established by Kurdish academics and scientists to develop and promote science through the following activities:

•Identifying and establishing a network among Kurdish and non-Kurdish scientists

•Promoting education and public awareness

•Providing expertise to assist Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)) to improve the infrastructure of Kurdistan

•Providing opportunities to promote scientific research among Kurdish researchers

•Fostering links between science and industry and promoting contact with non-Kurdish researchers.

•Advancing awareness about national and international relations

The activities and program of KAS will be developed by financial support from grants provided by Kurdistan Regional Government and other international agencies, but with no statutory obligation to any organization.

At the latest meeting of KAS, held on 2nd of August 2004 in Stockholm, a Board of KAS was elected. The elected Boad is composed of researchers with academic achievements and qualifications, living both in and outside Kurdistan.

Several countries are not represented in this elected Board, hence a decision to arrange an additional meeting on 28th November 2004 in Stockholm, in order to provide updated duties, work plans and to extend Board membership.

We believe that KAS will play a crucial role in the re-construction of Kurdistan, and in building a modern society, ready to interact with the rest of the world.

We invite academicians worldwide to join KAS in this crucial epoch of the Kurdish history to support the people of Kurdistan with knowledge, skill and science to provide its citizens better life conditions and to improve its culture.

The first world congress of Kurdistan Academy of Science (KAS 2005) will be held in Hawler, Kurdistan (27-30, July 2005). It will be organized by the (KAS) and sponsored by Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
