Health IT Experts to Discuss Hidden Data Risks at Indiana HIMSS Conference

The presentation will take place at the Nov.18–19 INHIMSS & IHIMA Conference being held in Columbus, Ind.
As healthcare providers scramble to meet new security mandates, independent audits reveal a collective failure in electronic data protection as it relates to medical devices connected to a healthcare network. Protected electronic patient health information (ePHI) data losses, patient misdiagnoses or diversions, and hefty penalties—including incarceration—all can result from failure to protect networked devices.
“Nearly 80 million health records were breached last year because threats were not properly assessed,” said Reber. “We continue to see the domino effect of data leaks and misfires reported by our industry,” he added. “With healthcare providers struggling to protect patient data and observe HIPAA and HITECH mandates,” he concluded, “Health IT professionals can’t afford not to have a firm grasp on the risks that have plagued many of their peers.”

In addition to exploring patient and security risks unique to connected medical devices, the panel will discuss potential outcomes through real-world examples, action steps to minimize or reverse risks, and tactics for managing implementation obstacles and objections.
