Good Samaritan Hospital is issuing an urgent call for blood donations, saying that supplies have dipped to unacceptably low levels.

Blood shortfalls are common throughout the country in the summertime. But the Blood Bank at Good Samaritan says this year's shortage is unusually severe -- and especially serious in the Lower Hudson Valley.

To help ease this shortage, Good Samaritan Hospital is sponsoring a series of blood drives to help meet the urgent need for blood donors in our community. Blood drives are scheduled for:

-July 19th at Novartis Pharmaceutical on Old Mill Road in Suffern from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.

-July 31st at St. JohnÂ’s Church in Sloatsburg from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

In addition to the sponsored blood drives, the donor room hours at Good Samaritan Hospital are Monday through Friday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Although it is best to call ahead, walk-ins are welcome. To schedule a donation, call the Blood Bank at Good Samaritan Hospital at (845) 368-5178.

Blood supplies in the Lower Hudson Valley typically drop off in the summer months, when regular donors are not available due to busy schedules and vacations. In addition, the recent hot weather has caused donations to drop significantly. Therefore, all potential blood donors are asked to participate.

Good Samaritan Hospital is part of the Bon Secours Charity Health System, which also includes St. Anthony Community Hospital in Warwick, NY and Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, NY. Additionally, Bon Secours Charity Health System provides the services of a Certified Home Health Agency, two long-term care facilities, an assisted living and adult home facility and several other medical programs.
