MuttShacks Stops the Killing of Healthy but Homeless Animals
Muttshacking is a new paradigm in animal rescue that may be the fastest solution to getting millions of lost dogs and cats off the streets and out of kill shelters.
(PRWEB) June 30, 2005
Fifty-six percent of dogs and seventy one percent of cats that enter shelters are euthanized. According to Humane Society statistics about 9.6 million animals are euthanized every year.
MuttShackers do the incredible job of saving lives through a network ranging from the hands-on foster care givers, active internet "Keyboarders", hands on "PaperTrailers" and a brain trust of online experts. Muttshacking is the new paradigm in animal rescue which can operate in any city in the US.
A MuttShack rescue center is created when a Good Samaritan creates a temporary sanctuary in their home called a "MuttShack". They select just one animal from the thousands presently in kill shelters and bring him home. They then rehabilitate the pet, socialize him, nurture him back to health and become his temporary guardian and promoter, finding him a new life with quality permanent guardians. But, they have one thing, which regular foster homes, don't have, they have the support of an extensive volunteer network.
MuttShack Keyboarders, are animal loving computer geeks, who are updated daily on animals at risk through their local MuttBlog. Keyboarders are the nerve center who post and e-mail stories on bulletin boards, newsgroups, Blogs and notify the press, all in an effort to find new homes for a pet in danger of being put to sleep.
MuttShack PaperTrailers make paper trails of "Homes Wanted posters throughout their neighborhoods featuring pets at risk in the local shelters. They print posters from the MuttShack site and the Internet and then post notices at Vet's Offices, Pet Stores, Coffee Shops and Community Bulletin Boards.
Bow-Wow-Know Hows are animal experts. Legal eagles, vets, shelter workers, fundraisers, and the brain trust that converge at the MuttShack Bulletin Boards, to give advice and counsel to rescuers and volunteers. http://www. websitetoolbox. com/tool/mb/muttshack (http://www. websitetoolbox. com/tool/mb/muttshack) and http://www. care2.com/c2c/group/MUTTSHACK (http://www. care2.com/c2c/group/MUTTSHACK). MuttShack is also actively involved in working with lawmakers to adopt legislation and ordinances to dissolve the outdated and barbaric ÂKill Shelter methodology and ultimately promote an animal safe society.
Sponsors save lives by donating to the MuttShack Foundation, a 501((c)3) charitable organization, giving vital financial support so pets may be bailed out of shelters, fed and treated and rescuers may be supported in their efforts.
When a person joins MuttShack, they register their own MuttShack Rescue and name their MuttShack.
They learn where to find pets to save, how to rescue from shelters, how to take care of, socialize and find a new home for their rescued pet.
They join online Foster Groups where they can post pictures of their rescues, find one-on-one support from experts and promote their rescued pets.
They get together with other MuttShackers at special events, such a the National Homeless Animals' Day or at Foster Events.
Sponsors can donate to rescue pets by giving to the Muttshack Foundation where their contribution helps to support MuttShacks all over the US. MuttShackers go on rescuing one pet after another and undertake a heavy personal financial burden.
MuttShack Foundation is a Registered and Approved 501((c)3) Charity. Donations can be made by electronic checks, credit cards and through Paypal.

What makes MuttShacks different from traditional shelters and rescue organizations is that they have virtually limitless capacity. Because their rescues are handled in foster homes, they don't spend their money on buildings, staff and infrastructures. They don't maintain a work force to feed and walk animals. Instead their shelters are created in individual homes.
"Many people have been exposed to taking in a rescued a dog or cat. It is no different, except this time they have the support of experts, and a network of support to promote the re-homing of their rescued pet," said Amanda St. John, Founder of MuttShack.
Muttshack actively supports creations of dog parks, pet friendly venues, pet-friendly hotels and apartments and a society that loves to share their lives with animals.
MuttShack also runs a series of Lifelines. Slideshows that feature animals at risk, which are e-mailed in a grassroots effort to get them out of the pounds.
