Two new books just published, How to Eat Healthy and Well for Less Than $5 a Day by Dr. Ilga Winicov Harrington (RoseDog Books) and The Low Fructose Approach to Weight Control by Dr. George A. Bray (Dorrance) focus on both healthy eating to lose and control weight and the cost of eating well.

In How to Eat Healthy and Well for Less Than $5 a Day, Dr. Harrington stresses the importance of eating raw and whole foods, of developing meal plans, of purchasing seasonal foods, and of learning ways to shop intelligently and without waste. In this practical guide, the author offers up sample menus, recipes, and shopping lists to assist readers, armed with facts and information, on how to stretch scarce financial resources without risking health and nutrition.

Dr Harrington is a microbiologist who has worked in teaching and research throughout her long career. Her lifelong interest in food and nutrition has caused her to write this book, which is so relevant today given our current economic and health care crises.

Dr. George Bray has been researching obesity for forty years. While genes predispose individuals to weight gain and to resisting weight loss, people can and do succeed in controlling weight.

The Low Fructose Approach to Weight Control suggests that a major problem in obesity is the abundance of fructose in Americans' diets, particularly bad fructose. Bray separates good fructose, sweetness found naturally in fruits and vegetables, from bad fructose, found in highly refined and processed foods containing many calories and little nutrition. One problem is processed foods are cheap and convenient, and they appeal to the tastes we have cultivated. Processed foods, foods with corn syrup, and foods with more than 200 calories per serving then are to be avoided. And, as is recommended by Harrington, Bray advises individuals they should buy and prepare foods that are natural, raw, and whole.

Bray discusses pregnancy and diet; yo-yo dieting; craving carbohydrates; the importance of exercise; the new food pyramid; and behavior control in this ultimately both readable and exhaustive treatment on a subject he has devoted his career to understanding.

Dr. Bray's credentials include membership in the American Association of the History of Medicine, the American Society for Nutrition, the American Medical Association, and the American Federation for Medical Research, to name just a few. He is also widely published, in books and articles, on the topic of obesity including The Battle of the Bulge, A History of Obesity Research released in 2007 by Dorrance Publishing.
